The Braves have no interest in Matusz. He will likely be jettisoned. What they wanted and got was the #76 pick in the upcoming draft as well as some more bonus room. The Braves now have 5 or 6 picks in the first 80 or so slots. They are making the upcoming draft a big focus.
Yeah, I heard they DFAed him immediately. -- Al

Had to happen. Brian Matusz was traded to the Atlanta today for a couple of minor league pitchers. Matusz had been a disaster with the O's, like Arrieta had been. Hmmm..... -- Al

I really think the reason they held on to Matusz for so long was just that, Arrieta, the O's wanted to make sure this guy doesn't become the next great All Star pitcher that got kicked out of Bmore and go on to greatness else where, no doubt he was given a ton of time to prove himself with the Orioles and just didn't happen so if he goes onto another team and becomes a great starter good for him and we'll chalk another one up to fate...Sammy

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for Harvey. We will see what the next few days brings.

NYY's are at .500, which is pretty impressive considering where they were 2 weeks ago. -- Al

Al,

A team is never as bad as it looks when it is losing or as good as it looks when it is winning. I'm glad they made it back to .500 this quickly, but I'll withhold judgment on their playoff chances until the end of July, when there is a large enough sample size to get a feel for how a team is likely to perform. if they are within 4-5 games of the Division lead at that point, then I will get excited for a fun pennant race.

They have the best back end of the bullpen in the history of baseball, which is saying something considering at one point they had Wetland/Rivera as the back end of their bullpen.

Get to the 6th inning with the lead and the game is over.

Come playoff time, a back end of the bullpen like theirs is deadly, just ask the Royals.

The teams right now mashing the ball like beer league softball teams will not be the same in the playoffs, pitching wins championships, not home runs..................

I don't really see the Yankees as more than a 500 team. Too many holes in the SP and the lineup is a little long in the tooth. However, they're in a competitive division.

I think it would be better for them if they dropped out of the race before the trading deadline so they can get some good picks for Chapman.

Just glad to see them playing better. The AL East isn't the same with the NYY's in the mix. It's a fun division to watch when all the teams are going well. -- Al

Matz is really good. Made the Nats look helpless. Round 2 to the Mets. Series at 1-1, games at 3-3. About what you would figure for these 2 teams. Should be like this all year. -- Al

Syndergaard and Matz are 1 and 2 this year for them. Yes, it should be an exciting season between these two teams. I don't think they meet again until June.

Mets have decided to give Harvey another chance next week against the White Sox. I really can't see the results being any different. Mets management tried to paint the first three innings as progress but that's been his pattern this year until recently: his ERA in the first three innings is decent (in the 3s) but in innings four through six, it's been in the 9s. If they want to give him a confidence booster but not send him down, they should sit him down and pitch him against a sub 500 team, not against good teams like the Nationals or White Sox.

George,

I completely agree. Right now the Yankees are winning because they have gotten six quality starts in a row, and have been able to get the benefit of their all world bullpen. But what starters can they really count on all season? Tanaka is solid if his arm stays healthy, Iovaldi has always been inconsistent. He is hot right now, but could be a disaster in two weeks. Sherman Clump, as you like to call him, has very little left in the tank, and if he pitches .500 we are lucky. Pineda is a head case, and you never know what you are going to get. Nova has also been consistently inconsistent. Like I have always said, with baseball, you have to see how healthy and good your team can be over a large sample size. Right now the Yankees are .500. If by the end of July they are 7-10 games over .500, then they might be competitive down the stretch. They could just as easily be 7-10 games under .500 if age or health causes a breakdown of their starting pitchers. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that the Yankees are playing meaningful baseball in late September.

Tonight vs the Rockies, the Red Sox are featuring a line up of all home grown talent except Ortiz as the DH, who they signed after the Twins released him. Ramirez at first is a free agent signing, but he came up through the Red Sox farm system before being traded to the Marlins for Josh Beckett back in 2006.

Vazquez catching, Ramirez at first, Pedroia at second, Bogaerts at short, Shaw at third, Swihart in Left, Bradley in Center, Betts in right.

Pretty impressive in todays free agent era..................................

This year is Vin Scully's last year. He is simply the best broadcaster that has ever existed. Vin Scully has been broadcasting games before I was born and that's getting to be a long time. He has a way of telling a story like no one else ever has.

Recently Tom Verducci sat down with him and interviewed him for Soorts Illustrated. It's a wonderful article. See www.si.com/scully

How can you not like a guy who eats Jolly Ranchers as part of his routine?:wink2: -- Al

Ouch, the Twins released Ortiz back in the day?

My God, please let the O's give up on Ubaldo Jimenez, this guy has been a train wreck all season :mad: even when he's pitching some what decent it's 3 packs of frogs (and I don't even smoke) just to get through a game!!! if the Orioles can just find 1 more quality starter some how and drop Ubado pun intended because at this point that's about all he is..bad...Sammy
Jimenez strikes again! Lasted all of 1.2 innings this time. 50 pitches to get 5 outs (5 hits and 3 walks) and 6 runs. Another fine job by the weak link. -- Al

That's ok Al, today the Red Sox bullpen imploded after being up 8-4 to Toronto, gave up 4 to tie it in the 8th, then Ortiz hit a home run to give them a 9-8 lead, then the closer gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th and they lost 10-9.

This team is the mirror image of the 1978 team; they'll score a ton of runs, but their pitching staff is a dumpster fire.

Dombrowski needs a another year to find more pitching, they need at least two starters and a couple of decent set up men.

Those 'won' games that get away are the kind that really hurt. I know the game isn't over until 27 outs are recorded, but there is an expectation of victory in those situations. Bad enough when your team is out of it by the 2nd inning, but to have a lead get away like that is agonizing. Those last 3 outs are a bee-atch and the closer earns every penny, except when he doesn't. -- Al
