Terrific pitching duel in DC today as the Nats win 1-0 over SF. Pity there had to be a loser as Bumgarner was brilliant, allowing only 2 hits. Unfortunately for him, the 2nd hit was an opposite field Hr by Nats catcher Wilson Ramos in the 7th inning. Roark, (the Nats secret pitching weapon) is now 12-6 on the year. Nats CF Ben Revere saved the game in the top of the 7th by making a Willie Mays catch (over the shoulder) in deep CF as he hit the wall for out #3. Giants had 2 on and both would have scored if the ball had fallen in. These 2 teams really play some good games against each other. -- Al

Tanner Roark now has pitched 7 games where he has gone 7 (8 in one case) innings and allowed no runs, the most in baseball. He has won 6 of those games and had an ND in the other. In fact, Roark has gone 7+ innings in 14 of his 24 starts and is 9-2 in those games. He might be the most underated pitcher in baseball. He certainly doesn't get much recognition outside DC. -- Al

Just have Dusty go tell Bruce that he's giving him a gift. Here you go Bruce :wink2:

The Orioles are going to the World Series this year; ok, glad I said that and got it out of the way so that when it happens, I won't be caught by surprise and want to smash something into 10,000 pieces.

Good luck with it, let me know how it turns out all you LET'S GO O'S!! fans.

And it's no coincidence that this is the year Sammy finally makes it to the OTSN shpw...................................O's World Series trip-Sammy trip to OTSN.

We all know what that means; good old Sammy is the good luck charm the Orioles have been looking for since 1983..............................

Just need to win the AFC North this year and 2016 will be a pretty good year!!!^&grin oh, and a First Legion Panther just to top it off :):)...Sammy

Machado of the O's is having a day. He's 3-3 (all Hr's) with 7 RBI's and it is still in the 3rd inning, 10-0 O's. -- Al

As good as the bats were today Bundy is proving what I have been hoping for all along, the guy is a top 2-3 starter right now on any team (as long as he stays healthy) another great start today, now if Gausman can be more consistent then that's a great 1-2-3 group, and once you make the playoffs with all the travel days 3 is about all you need...........LET'S GO O'SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)...Sammy

Al:

Despite losing the series the Giants did show some signs of life in the last 2 games. And to be fair to them the Nats are a great team. There is no shame in losing 2 out of 3 to a team with that lineup and pitching staff. Interestingly enough the one game that the Giants won was against Strasburg.

On a side note I really have come to appreciate just how great Bryce Harper is. He battles pitchers like no other. He may not get a hit every time (obviously) but you are going to really have to work to get him out.

It was a good series. Strasburg has been tagged in 2 of his last 3 starts so I hope he hasn't hit a wall. The series would have gone to SF if Revere hadn't made that 7th inning catch. A miracle catch turns an incredibly close game. I am concerned that Harper has been in a funk since May and hasn' t come out of it and with Zimmerman having a down year, that's 2 key bats we're missing. Fortunately, Murphy and Ramos are having career years to take up the slack. If we get to the playoffs and face SF, please have them leave Cain off the playoff roster. Please. We can't seem to solve him. :wink2::tongue: -- Al

SF SS Brandon Crawford had a great week in last night's win over Miami as SF prevailed 8-7 in 14 innings. Crawford went 7 for 8 with 2 RBI's. He tied the NL record for hits in a game, becoming only the 5th player since 1900 to get 7 hits in one game, ( 2 NLers and 3 ALers). -- Al

O's starter Kevin Gausman's horrid luck with run support continued in last night's loss to Oakland as he went 6 innings, surrendering just 2 runs, but took the loss in a 3-2 decision. Gausman is now 3-9, despite having 12 QS in his 20 games. The O's are scoring an average of just over 2 runs when Gausman pitches, which largely explains his record. Seems to happen to one pitcher on a given team each year, pitch well and lose because of the lack of run support. That's baseball. All he can do is keep going and doing his best. -- Al

I've always liked Girardi but lost a little respect for him the way he treated Posada. Now, he doesn't owe anything to Arod but he said today, after sitting Arod again, that his job description doesn't entail farewell tours. Yes, Arod is an idiot, a cheater, you name it, but still, but what Girardi said is just a bit nasty.

This whole A-Rod thing is a joke. He's not "retiring", the Yankees are releasing him. Who retires in August and just goes away? And he's going to be with the team as a consultant next year, still getting his 27 million dollars.

The guy might be a stooge, but that's a bush league way to treat a guy, forcing him out...................

Mets have a seven game home stand against the Diamondbacks and Padres this week. They needed to clean up against these teams. They've dropped two to Arizona and are now 1 game over 500. They need to win tomorrow's game but pitched the closer for two innings so no Familia tomorrow. At this point, forget the WC, salvage respectability.

O's having a rough time in Oakland. They have lost 3 straight 1-run games, 3-2, 2-1, and tonight's 1-0 loss. They were beaten tonight by a LHP, Ross Detwiler, whose last win as a starting pitcher was in May, 2013. Detwiler is with his 4th team in the last 2 seasons, with a 1-5 combined record, and the O's make him look like a Cy Young candidate. O's getting great pitching but their hitting has taken a holiday all of a sudden. The O's really have to solve this being unable to win on the road problem before the playoffs. They are now only 12-14 since the break. -- Al

I agree, management has already quit on the season and its not like every game is a must win. Our starting pitching is totally breaking down, half of our regular hitters were batting Arod like BA. Do not tell me in a season of hitting failures, that he was worse than anyone else..Not fair. Michael

I also agree. But this is coming from Cashman or Hal Steinbrenner, not Joe Girardi. This is about the bad 10 year contract they gave A-Rod. They are taking their own stupidity in signing A-Rod to that ridiculous extension despite his PED history and advanced age out on A-Rod. Don't spite A-Rod for taking your money, accept the fact that he was one of a series of incredibly foolish signings to get a single championship in 2009 (Jason Giambi, A-Rod, Carl Pavano, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Mark Teixiera), and let him play out the string. Hopefully they learned their lesson, and will never hand out a long term contract that ends with a player older than 35 again.

This all stems from a big overreaction to the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004 and again in 2007, then to top it off, Tampa winning the division and going to the World Series in 2008.

The Yankee brass at that point panicked as they felt like they were third in the division, so they spend a total of 450 million (that's half a billion dollars with a B) on free agents in the 2008 off season and they won (or bought) a WS title in 2009.

They've been paying for it ever since. Teshata looks awful out there, A-Rod is a walking corpse, CC is as well for the most part.

Then they overspent on Dreamboat in center and coconut head behind the plate, two more horrible signings, although noodlearm in center got an assist on a throw out at home last night.

Look at the Red Sox, they did the same thing by letting Lester go, then panicking and signing Price to a 30 million dollar a year contract and so far, he's been a complete and utter disaster, they are 9-13 in games he's started. If that number was flipped, they'd be three games up in the AL East instead of on the outside looking in on the playoff picture.

Huge, free agent contracts are a disaster waiting to happen; you need to draft right, develop young talent as your core players, then fill in here and there with free agents as needed.

The Yankees will be right back in this same boat if they open up their checkbook to Harper in a few years; he's a great talent, but at some point, that talent falls off the table and then you are stuck, just ask the Angels with Pujols.

I'll take a Red Sox team of Vasquez, Shaw, Pedrioia, Boegarts, Moncada, Bennitendi, JBJ and Betts with Hanley as the DH; that's a total of 8 home grown players and one who came up through the RS system before being traded for Beckett, who pitched his *** off and carried them to a WS title in 2007....................

Mets are on the verge of being swept at home. Unreal. I wonder if this is it for Terry.
