Game 5 another well-pitched, hard fought contest with the Cubs surviving 3-2 and getting to return to Cleveland with their dream still alive. This series continues to be a good one. -- Al

I still feel like the Cubs are prolonging the inevitable, especially if they have to face Kluber again.

Why? He's not God. In 1986 Bruce Hurst seemed unbeatable, like Kluber, but the Mets found a way to get to him. The Cubs are not facing Koufax or Walter Johnson. Obviously, they need to jump off to a lead tomorrow. The pressure was on them before, especially playing at Wrigley. Now, it's on the Indians. Blowing 3-1 leads happen occasionally but not in awhile so maybe it's time. Great teams need a challenge. We will now see if they are that or just a good team who ran into another good team.

If the series gets to Game 7, I'll put my money on Kluber. He may not be Superman or whatever, but he seems to have the Cubs number, so far. That being said, he will be going on 3 days rest again and that fact could catch up to him. Up to the Cubs to solve him and take advantage, if they can get to Game 7. -- Al

In a game 7, as the conventional wisdom goes, anything could happen. The Cubs would have Hendricks going and although his post season work has been mixed, he has a coming out year this year: lowest ERA in the NL and his WHIP was .0979. Kluber's stats were a little higher but some of that could be ascribed to the presence of the DH, so you could say it's a wash.

In addition, the number of pitchers who have won three games in a series is very low, only 12 in the history of the World Series, the last one being Randy Johnson in 2001, and one of those was in relief. Winning three games is difficult.

I agree that Kluber is no Koufax, Walter Johnson or Bumgarner ^&grin. I also see that his ERA in the World Series is .75 and .89 in the postseason overall. When you couple that with the fact that so far the Cubs have only scored 10 runs in 5 WS games, I would imagine that the odds are stacked against the them if they face Kluber again.

Then again all of this is elementary if the Cubs don't get it to a game 7.

Me thinks Cleveland is a little tight...3-0 and they're playing like poop.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Good lord, everything lined up to win the title and the Indians are pulling the biggest choke in the playoffs. How can a team be this flat with a title on the line? Looks like Game 7 for all the marbles. -- Al

Cubs just blew the doors off this game. Still a lot of game to go though.

There will be a game 7 so here's your chance to rethink the above as Bryant and Company are now on fire. Kluber has a better W-L record in the post season than Hendricks but the ERA is not that much different 0.89 vs 1.31. Cubs need to do tomorrow what they did today: get out early and put the pressure on. Cleveland needs to get a lead, any kind of a lead, until the 5th, when they can turn it over to Miller.

Should be fun.

I think you are on to Cleveland's game plan. Kluber will go 4-5 innings if they have the lead then they will turn it over to the bullpen. The trick of course is getting the lead, but all it will take is one run. However, as you point out, that may prove difficult against Hendricks. It should be a great game and at the very least, both of these teams have proven that they belong in game 7 of the World Series.

An unintended benefit of last night's loss is that Miller and Allen are very well rested. The Cleveland plan has been not to let the opposition go through the batting order a third time against a starting pitcher. Generally, it's the third time when a team enjoys success, be it the regular season or the post season. Obviously, you couldn't do in the regular season what the Indians are doing in the post season; you'd blow out your bullpen.

Game 7...it's going to be a hoot. This has been a terrific series, what with the long title droughts on the line and both fan bases being so wrapped up in the result. Brad and Jason have made some very astute assessments regarding the way things have played out and the various strategies, which I have enjoyed reading, so I am ready for Game 7 tonight, with no real investment other than wanting to see a good game and one of these long suffering franchises end their agony. -- Al

Thanks Al but I can't complain any unique insights. On the way to work, I listed to Steve Phillips and Todd Hollandsworth on the MLB Channel on Sirius XM and learn a lot listening to these guys.

I just read that Maddon is not so sure that Chapman will be available this evening and that Lester and Lackey may have to fill in. The Cubs pen has been shaky as it is and this just makes it shakier.

Al:

Thanks. Like Brad, I don't know that my observations were anything more than piecing together what I have heard from the MLB network and local radio.

It is very interesting to watch that games without an "true" interest in either team winning. It adds an objective feel to it all. So I am ready for Game 7 also, hoping it is a good one and knowing that a new champ will be crowned!

That should have read "claim credit to any unique insights" rather than "complain".

It reminds me of when the Giants used Bumgarner in game 7 against the Royals. Bochy had little faith in his relievers too.
