Baseball - At Last ! (1 Viewer)

Had a chance to catch the Sox/Yankees game last night, the new ballpark looks a lot like the old one to be honest, except more empty seats.

Who can blame the fans at 2,500.00 a throw for those nice big barko lounger seats near home plate and the dugouts, are the Heir Steinbrenners for real or what. A friend of mine who's a Yankee fan said his season tickets in the new ballpark (4 seats for 81 games) would have ran him 810,000.00, BUT, he gets a parking pass and all the food and adult beverages you can handle.

Yankees spent the GNP of Yugoslavia on three big names but forgot to get some bullpen help, that bullpen is pathetic..................

Yep. Same old story year after year. Go for the big offensive guns, the big flashy names. Why worry about pitching? HELLO! It's only 90% of the game. It is my belief that this problem fits most all teams, especially ones I follow, ie., the Nats and O's. It's all about the ability to throw the ball and get outs! Another season of fighting for last place. Go team.:( -- lancer

They spent big money this year on pitching in the form of the fat guy.

C.C. will probably be fine. The NYY problem, as with many teams, and as George pointed out, is their almost total lack of mid- relievers. I do not know why so many bullpens are in such a mess but I suspect it is a dilution of talent. Just too many teams and not enough major league talent to go around. Almost every team has 2 or maybe 3 decent starters and a closer. After that it becomes a crapshoot. Back in the (wayback machine alert!) 60's, 70's every team seemed to have 3-4 solid starters and a solid long-reliever who could spot fill as a starter. Of course, there were far fewer teams and it was much tougher to break into the majors. This is JMO and my memory, of course, but the art of pitching seems to be real hit or miss (forgive my humor) nowadays. -- lancer

The way baseball is nowadays (here comes the old "back in my day"), the way they baby pitchers with pitch counts and side sessions and throwing every fifth day, you need a solid bridge from your starter to your closer.

The Red Sox are one of the few teams who have addressed this. They've got Del Carmen, Okajima, Saito, Ramirez (the guy throws bee bee's, wow) and Masterson all there to take you from starter to the closer, Papelbon.

I can recall numerous times pre 2004 when the Sox would have a lead only to see the bullpen throw a shoe and blow the game, 1986 game 6 of the World Series painfully comes to mind....................

Just heard MLB has suspended Manny for 50 games! Performance enhancing drugs. What a joke baseball has become. The LA Times had an article this week on how fun it was to watch the Dodgers again, what a great guy Manny is compared to Kobe etc. Man are they eating crow today.

Give me Jason Bay over that cartoon character anyday of the week and twice on Sunday; 50 games, that's gonna cost Manny about 8 million.

Glad he shot his way out of here..............

Oooooops,

"Say it isn't so Joe",

Give them an extra portion Doug, and add some Black Mamba to that plate of crow.

Seriously, I think it's kind of strong. That's a 7 million dollar fine. I could buy a lot of soldiers with that.

“Recently, I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me,”

yea, uh huh, and then what happened Manny, your cousin signed off on it?

Petit was the only one who played it straight, smart guy.

The press in LA have turned on him like a pack of wolves. I guess they forgot what a great guy he was earlier this week.

The press, what a pack of jackal's. I just love the way they dissect each and every word some poor schmuck gives in an interview and then twists it into their own meaning. It's no wonder that most athletes interviews turn into a series of cliches.

The media does overdo it most times.

ESPN seems to be one of the worst when they get hold of the story.

It's turned into the CNN of sports..............every story is repeated 15 minutes on the hour with a new guests perspective.:mad:

Well, I love the sports channels though and since they can't just make up news:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

they really seem to stress what they have, but it's not just sports.

Well, we are 1/4 of the way through the season and it is time to draw some conclusions. Conclusion #1 is that my two teams, the Orioles & Nationals, are really bad. But bad in different ways. The Nats are the more interesting team. They have no relief pitching and they can't field but they are young and enthusiastic plus they can hit and score runs. In addition, they have demoted Daniel "what's a strike-zone?" Cabrera to the bull-pen where he will no doubt pitch his way off the team. Their 5 starters now consist of 4 rookies and a second year man. They can only get better. The Orioles are same-old, same-old bad, boring and just treading water in last place, as usual. Keep Markakis, Roberts, Jones, Huff, Guthrie, Mora and blow up the rest of the roster. Then they can find a decent owner and maybe start winning again. That ends today's rant. -- lancer

I am a lifelong Yankee fan, and I love to go to the ballpark......but with that said I am tired of all the drugs and phony records, and the now excessive expense to simply go to a ball game.

Mostly I wait for the post season, and hope the Yankees are in it......not much luck with that lately.

Having grown up watching Yogi, The Mick, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, even enjoying the era of Billy Martin, Yogi, and Reggie(Ain't I Just Great)Jackson was really something. Today I like Jeter, but can do without A-rod and madonna and the rest of the roid-squad.

We were planning a Yankee outing on our next trip back to Jersey but I told the daughter I wouldn't enjoy a $1,000 game day! Thats just crazy!

I too am a lifelong Yankee fan and just wish Arod would go away. I liked him as a Mariner but in retrospect that was just because Griffey and Randy Johnson were such self centered jerks.

Looks like the Yankees have gotten their act together, ripping off 8 in a row I think.

And where did Johnny Damon get all of this power, what's he got, 10 bombs already.

Gee lets see; aging superstar on the last year of his contract, trying to pump up the numbers so another team will bite at the end of the year.............things that make you go hmmmm.

Damon and Shemp will both be gone and they'll back up a dump truck full of money and drop it in front of Jason Bay, bank on it..........

How many of Damon's homers were at home? The ball is flying out of that place at a record pace.

I went to my first game at the new Yankee Stadium last night. The new place is magnificent, and looks huge, but the ball does fly out to right. Robbie Cano hit a line drive that went out over the short porch. However, the ball didn't seem to carry as well to left field, as several hard hit balls were caught on the warning track in left.

Things seem to be normalizing. Now that the Bluejays are playing the other AL East Teams, they are coming back to earth, now that the Yankees are getting healthy they are winning at a good pace, and Boston is playing well. By the all star break, (assuming both teams get more rather than less healthy) I expect that the Yankees and Boston will have separated themselves from the rest of the East.

I am going to say this once, and leave the issue. Back in the '70's, if two guys in each league hit 30+ homeruns it was a lot. Now it seems like every team has two guys with 30+ homers. It seems blatently obvious to me that the whole league is on steroids. I would be willing to bet if they tested every guy that hits 30+ homers 90% of them would be juicing. So now that they are testing, A-Rod is caught, Giambi is caught, Manny is caught, Ortiz suddenly comes back to earth and hits 1 homer this year when a couple of seasons ago he hit 50. They ought to purge all the numbers from 1990 to the present from the record books. For me Hank Aaron is still the home run king, and Roger Maris still holds the single season record. Just my two cents.
