Wait, Fowler re-signed with the Cubs?
Shocker for the O's. His contract was a done deal according to local sports TV. Apparently the deal fell through because the O's don't do opt-out clauses. Oh well, back to the drawing board. -- Al

Al:

Thanks for the update. I heard it in the background on ESPN radio but I thought he had already signed with the O's.

Best,
Jason

They may not like them but they need to get with the times. I take back what I said about the Os getting competitive. I think they tried to get these players on the cheap by waiting them out. When you follow that strategy you're shopping in the bargain bin.

Don't know about that. Fowler signed for 1 year at a lower rate with the Cubs. The O's offer was much higher for a longer period. There is something else involved with this decision by Fowler. -- Al

My perception is that they waited until spring training was either near or started to make offers to these players, thereby lowering the price since players are starting to get antsy that they don't have a contract yet.

That is true but doesn't explain the Fowler situation. The O's had offered Fowler somewhere around $33 mil for 3 years. Now why would Fowler go back to the Cubs for 1 year @ $8 mil? From what's being said around here, it was the a lack of an opt-out clause in the O's offer but Fowler is leaving a lot of money on the table and gambling that he can get more in a new contract in 2017. -- Al

Well, maybe this one has nothing to do with the Os but wanting to stay with the Cubbies and the chance to go the WS. He's keeping his starting job and the team wanted him back. Maddon gathered his team before workouts today and told them that he had a surprise... and Fowler shows up. They were all pretty happy that he was back

The only thing I can think of is that he wants a better chance to win a championship? That is an expensive bet ($25 mil).

Not necessarily. True, he left $3 million on the table but if he has a good year and/or the Cubs go far, he'll be in demand. This was an unusual year as the quantity of good players being on the market. 2016 will not be as good so there may be more demand for him.

I just saw that Fowler's agent claims there was never any deal with the Os and has branded their conduct irresponsible.

Fowler apparently told Adam Jones he was on his way to Baltimore. May be where the rumors got out of control. -- Al

Reality is never what it seems and truth is the first casualty.

Now the story is out and the only irresponsible person is that moron agent...as the news of the deal broke this past Sunday and then 4 days later he makes some stupid comment about it never happened?? so it goes like this....both Fowler and agent were all in with the 35 mill. to the Orioles but didn't read the O's small print about NOT being able to opt out after 1 year, he tried a couple of days to play hardball with the O's management who refused to budge on the option after 1 year (which I'm glad the O's stuck to thier guns on this) so agent then doubles back makes a behind the back deal to the Cubs for the 1 year with a option out for less, so then he tries to save face buy making a dumb arse comment, lesson learned....read the fine print for manking a handshake agreement...Sammy

Boys and their toys. Cars sound ok to me.:wink2: The money could be going to worse pursuits. -- Al
Day 5 of spring training for the Mets and Cespedes has shown up in new car #5, an $80k Jeep Wrangler. The man likes his wheels.^&grin -- Al

As long as he delivers -- and there's no reason he shouldn't -- that's all we care about.

The NL Central has 3 legitimate World Series contenders in Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. They could easily have both wild cards too.
