Baseball Hot Stove League 2016-2017 (3 Viewers)

Al:

I could see FA's not signing with the Nats a few years ago, but with Baker at the helm it is a real puzzle. Players rave about playing for him and they have money to spend. A player's manager and big bucks is usually a combo for top free agent signings across the board.

Jason, it is a head-scratcher. Maybe the FA's just don't like being so close to the seat of the government.:wink2: -- Al

It might have something to do with the location. Maybe it doesn't have the pizzazz of some of the big cities but DC is nice and so are the suburbs.

I have been reading up (I mean catching up) on some baseball news.

Why hasn't Jose Bautista been signed yet? In fact it does not even seem like he has received any offers?

He didn't have a great year and he is an older player. He would like to sign with Toronto on a one year deal but wants more than the $17 million qualifying offer. No word from the Blue Jays yet.

Brad:

Thanks for the info. His age is prohibitive, and that asking price is bound to keep suitors away.

Under the category of Not Knowing When to Quit: 44 year old Manny "being Manny' Ramirez has signed to play ball with a Japanese team. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Heard that the O's are interested in reacquiring Jason Hammel (Cubs FA) as a much needed addition to the starting pitching. Conversely, the O's have all but given up on Trumbo because he wants more years than the O's will offer. -- Al

The Baseball Hall of Fame inductees are to be announced next week and with 42% of the ballots in, the voting looks like this, with 75% required to be selected:

Bagwell 91%
Raines 91%
Pudge Rodriguez 81%
Vladimir Guerrero 74.7%
Trevor Hoffman 73%
Edgar Martinez 68%
Barry Bonds 66%
Roger Clemens 65%
Mike Mussina 60%
Curt Schilling 53%

Apparently, Bonds and Clemens have done so well because a lot of writers feel that if the Veterans Committee is going to pick Selig who presided over the steroids era, there is no reason not to include players who played in that era.

The Cubs and Red Sox are currently the favorites to win the World Series followed by the Dodgers and Nats.

I could see anyone of them winning it all, but that Red Sox rotation is going to be tough to beat.

O's avoid arbitration with Britton, signing him to a 1 year deal for $11.4 million. Could be a bargain if he has a year anywhere near as good as 2016. -- Al

Now the O's have signed Machado to a i year deal for $11.5 million. 2 big signings until they hit FA.
The Nats have also announced signing Harper to a 1 year deal worth $13.625 million, also before he hits FA at age 26. So both teams have signed their key players for 2017, but it does not address their FA status aterwards. All 3 will be dragging down big dollars in FA, but with who? -- Al

Harper's next contract will be record setting so I doubt it will be with the Giants.

:)

Shocker!!!! the O's resigned Trumbo for 3 years/37 mill, didn't see that happening, looks like another season of let's try the 3 run homer and hope for the best, I'm happy that Trumbo, Davis, Machado, Adams will all be back to swing for the fences but what about the starting pitching???^&confuse not much out there, I like Tillman, Guasman, Bundy but man we have got to find one more qualilty starter somewhere.

Unconfirmed reports that the O's and Trumbo have agreed to a 3 year, $37.5 million contract. Good. Now do something about the bleeping starting pitching. -- Al

Sorry Sammy, I didn't refresh before posting, otherwise I wouldn't have posted the same info.:redface2: -- Al

Spring training is around the corner. Mets first preseason game is against the Red Sox on February 24. To that end Mets made a few ends to shore up the bullpen.
