Luxury . . . we could only dream about living in a cardboard box.^&grin
Can't beat good brick and mortar shots.
I can feel a poem coming on......with apologies to Mike Harding (Napoleon's retreat from Wigan)
twas on the plains of Arnhem
the allies had just broken free
Monty was sat in his long john's
supping a cup of tea
he chewed his nails to the very quick
and chewed them down to the slow
when up the back yard came a corporal
his nose all aglow
blinking heck lord monty
the hun is fighting back
we've already chucked the kitchen sink
its looking rather black
I say old chap said monty
we'll show 'em whose best
he was feeling the cold just a bit
and stuck his hands up his vest
the airborne 1st had nowt to do
so he thought he would give 'em a job
take the last bridge he said
and I'll give you all five bob
behind the landings on D-Day
the US paras had been busy
so they got the closest bridges
although this would not be easy
He ordered the 30th to join 'em
up the road so narrow
but the hun threw so much lead back
there was no room even for a sparrow
At the start it all went well
a bridge or two went in the bag
the tanks started rolling nicely
but the timetable started to flag
it hit a snag in Nijmegen
where the Germans had also been hit
when they came the other way in '40
and struggled quite a bit
so monty asked the brave airborne
to go across in a boat
the lead was so thick, the water so swift
it was hard to get 'em to float
but cross they did and storm the bridge
using bomb and grenade with valour
they fought well and so brave
they deserved their medal of honor
the 30th tanks stormed across
buttoned up and shooting blind
they wanted to charge on to Arnhem
but had left the infantry behind
the PBI had it rough all the time
the enemy was often hard to see
sometimes fighting hand to hand
they could not break free
at Arnhem Frost had it sticky
spending days all on his todd
the rest of the men could not make it
not even a solitary bod
When the big stuff arrived it got really hot
they blasted and flattened all in sight
2 para fought back but in all that c@@p
they surrendered as they had not the might
the rest of the first were also at risk
pushed back to a thumb on the river
in the dark they scarpered by boat
still wet with the rain, they did shiver
twas 'a bridge too far' said someone
everyone had someone to blame
clever and brave though the plan was
it was also a crying shame
the war was not over by Christmas
and went on into forty five
the Germans attacked in the Bulge
and more men gave up their lives
