Best Money Sense on Retired (1 Viewer)

Brett, many people seem to think the GFS is over, and you appear to be among them. On this forum I warned about the strong possibility of an economic crash before the GFS became obvious to all, and there is more to come. I don't have any better access to this information than anyone else, but imo it's best to adopt a cautionary attitude rather than ignore such warnings as 'negative vibes' as some members seem to be doing.

OZDigger....

Thing is when I said negative vibes which, came from the Kelly's Heroes and was an injecture of humour is that if things are bad you can either do two things stay gloomy and apprehensive or, make the best of it and get on.

I am not saying what camp you are in but, on here many use the hobby as a release and may not want to hear that things could get worse. You never know... They may just keep getting better as we cannot stay in the myre for long as these things are cyclical and as I said with low interest rates in the UK for some time they have extra cash which, has been used for other things

Mitch, I didn't even know you used the term, that phrase has been used by a number of people, including myself.

Matt,
I did not say the GFC was over. What I said was things had got better since two years ago. There is a difference.

You have made some comments on K&C price increases. I noted this post by a forum member on 30 JULY when discussing FOV prices :

"Think of the earlier issues as being half-price rather than double now".

A glass half full way of looking at things. That post was made by you.

Regards
Brett

Most business people I have spoken to feel there was delay in the GFC in Australia, it seems you had a different experience.

I truly believe that the world is broadly divided into two roughly equal halves…pessimists and optimists.

Is it tough out there…of course it is! But as I said in another post…challenging times lead to interesting opportunities.

One thing Vezzolf and me can agree on is this…Time alone will tell!

Best wishes,
Andy C.

Optimism is a good thing......But for cautious, thoughtful consumers, being realistic about "percieved values" is also necessary in regards to "best money sense on retired"....At least that's the way savy consumers will decide on what they will and will not purchase in secondary markets....There is no doubt that "the times they are a changing".......and time will tell

Anyone else tired of reading the same old comments time after time from people that have no interest in purchasing anything unless its at retail or below?

When I find an old retired piece that I have been looking for I will purchase it for what I consider to be a reasonable price based on current market conditions. I will not whine, and complain that I can't purchase it for its original retail price.

The reason I have kept up with current market values is simply that I could make reasonable decisions when I chose to buy or sell an item. The market does varry with supply and demand.

I think we all know who has no interest in retired pieces over old retail, we get it, and I for one could care less.:)

I'm with you, although it is sometimes entertaining to read the fractured "logic" that accompanies the posts ranting about the "K/C retired soldiers game." If the "retired products ploy" is bad, I guess W. Britain should still be making the same toy soldiers that they made in 1893.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I for one will never get tired of hearing anyones opinion on any subject on here so, No, I am not sick and tired. If that answers the question.

Give it time Mitch, give it time :)

thebritfarmer....

I get your meaning but, in the time I have been on here when these discussions come up they always attract a number of posters who seem happy to reply and from what I see with different slants. Some may get sick but, they do not have to read or reply should they feel that way. Its only a little hobby and, apart from new releases the subject matter at its core will remain the same with the same gripes and positives so, we take the rough with the smooth.

Its also great that new members can see and hear these issues and input with their slant as I said in a previous post when this very issue was discussed yes you can trawl back and research but, its not as fulfilling as being able to talk it out on an open forum.

...................................................................................................

The idea is sound, certainly a new member is going to have questions which he may pose to the Forum reguarding the hobby. It is easy to understand his possible monetary concerns as he finds himself committing more and more money (with all the wonderful products offered) into his hobby.

Questions reguarding selling, buying retired pieces, dealing with different dealers, manufacters.....are all things many of us have come to terms with and many of us have an opinion on.:)

We are all entitled to our own opinions, and I have no problem with collectors that do not sell anything ever, or those that refuse to pay anything over retail (or less) for anything.

It would be nice if these people did not feel compelled to drag these views into every single discussion on retired pieces. Over time many of us have been "labeled" as speculators not collectors simply because we choose to sell things on occasion.

As I do not recall any label ever being created for anyone that doesn't sell anything, or pay .01 over retail (or less) I think that makes my point.:)

It would be nice if both sides could simply express their points of view without trying to prove the other side incorrect.

Especially once you learn (as we read eariler in this thread) that at least one of these folks has bought items to sell himself.

Let me be clear here, each collector has a right to handle his collection in the manner that he sees fit. Sell, don't sell, hunt for retired items, buy only current. Collect all manufacters, or buy only one its all their personal choice.
When a new collector asks a question reguarding buying retired pieces, or funding his collection......or simply managing the room it is begining to require he should be able to read all the different opions without anyone being "labeled" for the methods they employ to deal with their situation.:)

I agree with Mitch & Njja.

Being relatively new to this hobby, I value all the differing opinons by forumners. Each have their own merits and there really is no need to prove anything or get personal in the process.

Cheers

One of the things I find fascinating about this forum is reading about the different approaches people take to collecting and their collections. Each to their own I say and if it works for you good luck to you. These last few years as prices have gone up across the board (in all things)and the choice in quality and area gets gets bigger and bigger my collecting decisions are much harder, so its refreshing to come on here and find many other folk are experiencing the same thing. I admire you guys who sell stuff on ebay to finance new purchases, I'm afraid I'm a 'keeper' or hoarder (the wife might say;))and so I keep everything I buy, however this does raise space issues that I have to address in the near future.

Also I really enjoy seeing all the differing producers product in this hobby. I have said for many years that it is perfectly possible to be a big fan of one product whilst appreciating the work of others, this is a great hobby and the forum a great place to share it.

I am similar in collecting taste to Rob in that my own personal collection is something which I would not sell. however, it has spiralled out of control on the areas I collect. predominantly growing up it was WWII with the odd bengal lancer model thrown in but, the metal hobby has seen me go to SOHK AE britains and conte and, everyone else in between. I await patiently for one of the large manufacturers to visit the guards (all of them) and the household cavalry in 1/30 matt!!!!!!

The great thing about this hobby is the fact there are no right and wrong ways to collect, display, discuss or whatever. Everybodys opinion is a valuable input to the rich tapestry of our hobby.

Now, someone please take note on those guards thank you

I would be doomed !!!!!! I think if anyone WAS going to do it, it would be William Britains. Perhaps as part of the Museum Collection. That would be sweet especially a mounted HC band.:eek:

thebritfarmer....

It would truly be a wonderful collection its got to be visited properly soon. IMO it could be the series of the decade.

Good day all ___

1. Interesting topic. If I'm collecting a specific era/campaign, will usually try and get older retired items first, since they seem to appreciate in value (to a point), then step up a bit after a while, level out, and so on. Found this to be true for North African Campaign AK and EA figures, which were the first I collected. Glad I went the way I did for this group.

2. Just started collecting Napoleonics, scrambling now to get Russians, but mostly because I think they were just really well done, and are getting harder to find.

Cordially,
thales41
