Brisbane Dinner 2017. (1 Viewer)

Matt,

No show figures this year just your choice of Australian WWI figures with option to purchase the second

Last year's figure was the Bronze WWI Australian Marching figure on statute base again not a show figure

Mark

Thanks Mark, this was my Ninth K & C dinner and as you may know they used to hand the show figures out at the dinner, I believe this system changed last year and now you have to collect the figure from the shop. I also note that they are now more a complementary figure rather than a special edition show figure. Which turns out in the collectors favour as the figure can be tailored to "local" collectors. Anyway, I made a special trip to Brett's shop yesterday to collect my free WWI Aussie figure (charging not squatting). I also purchased several charging Jap figures to go up against my fighting Aussie poses that I purchased several months ago. Luckily I had some assistance to decide which figures to buy as I know SFA about Japanese uniforms.

A belated post about the actual competition aspect.

This year we split it into two parts, Diorama and Display. Diorama being where somebody has created something like a building or the groundwork themselves. Display was pretty much bought stuff arranged well as it was aimed at getting people to participate and then hopefully next time go for a diorama build. There were nine entrants in each category with Matt's son participating in both. This made 17 entrants compared to 13 last year. Probably would have been a few more but the bringing forward of the event by four months caught some out in terms of building time.

There was a base size limit of 320 x 350mm although I did mistakenly give a few people a smaller dimension. Todd's Desert one was one of those but did not hinder his success. After last years competition I did notice somebody particularly keen about asking if there would be a height limit. I said there was none and lo and behold an amazing Waterfall appeared.

The competition was divided into four categories :

Judges Choice chosen by two non participants :

1st was Glenn with his Waterfall (mixture of K&C and Jenkins figures and a bear).

2nd was Brett (not me !) with a Tobruk scene (with medals and helmet displayed)

3rd was Mark (IV) with his Winter ambush (TG Germans on horses with K&C vehicle and French resistance as Partisans).

Andy's Çhoice

1st Matt with his Russian diorama

2nd Todd with his N Africa dio with SAS Kiwis sneaking up on AK's.

3rd Mark IV Ambush again

Peoples Choice for Diorama (based on voting by attendees)

1st Glenn's Waterfall

2nd Matt's Russians

3rd Mark's Ambush

Peoples Choice for Display (based on voting by attendees)

1st Hitler Office (CS building with K&C figures)

2nd Vikings attack (with Britains Vikings (and 1 Jenkins !) and Life of Jesus boat from K&C)

3rd SAS LRDG (K&C items, with the sexy lady image behind it).

Some displays did raise issues not had before. Whilst they did add to the display the displaying of helmet, medals and sexy lady were appreciated but wont be allowed next time. Otherwise the add ons could get out of control and it is hard to know how they impact on judging / voting. Overhanging of items over the permitted area (ie. canoe) was allowed as the base size did not exceed permitted area. However will probably set a limit on how much items can overhang to allow for items like barrels and wings.

Then there was one I did not notice until days later when looking at my photos. The painted plastic Sherman which had gone from American to German ! Nice paint job but for the purpose of our competition we cant go down the track of painting figures and re-painting of items.

It was good to see the number of entrants and some had produced them at fairly short notice.

Hopefully the competition and larger displays will inspire others for next year. I have heard some suggestions we might need to handicap some diorama makers and I am now wondering how high some people might go.

Was fun for all and thanks to all who participated.

Have a few pics that cover some angles not seen so hopefully will be added to thread soon.

Brett actually meant a poster of a sexy lady rather than the display of a sexy lady ... or maybe he is confusing it with another dinner from before my time?
