Britains Royal Coach Soldier Pac (3 Viewers)

Dear All,

thanks for yr kind words. I worked more on the royal couple, beefing up the figs and adding details such as tassels and braiding from copper wire, crosses etc. I removed the King's Right hand and sceptre to facilitate the work. Will finalise this by finishing the crown for the Queen before I start more detailed painting.

For the coach, I use a booklet Pitkin Pictorial Guide "The Royal Mews", other books on royalty and horse carriages and supplemented by lots of pics from the Internet and well-wishers.

Just like the real thing! Ha! - I thought this was going to be a tad difficult - but that's a good start. Honestly - at this scale - you are really going to have your work cut out. Don't get too close for the final pic! You're doing supebly well - so far, with a nice job on the coach.

Would be fun to see your final pic - alongside an original Britains version.

Anmyone out there got a pic of one to share? johnnybach

Victor,

Great paint job, this original Britains version was at the London show last Saturday.

{bravo}}

Thanks Jeff - I think you are ahead on points so far Victor!:smile2: johnnybach

Nice job, Vic! I like the way your panels have turned out, too!

Prost!

Hi All,

(Jeff, thanks for the W Britains pics).

Thanks for the vote of support but I think it unfair to compare on what I have further done with what is really a toy piece. The original is certainly a very attractive play set (we all wished that we owned one...).

I have finished touching up my coach and given it a gloss varnish which certainly makes it glow. The royals are the last thing to be done and then, the dreaded horses. But in the meantime, enjoy the updated pics.

Hi Victor,

You’ve done a first rate job on the carriage and figures, I take it you don’t like painting horses then? :wink2:

Keep up the good work.

Jeff

Nice to be able to compare your version with an original Britains version supplied by Jeff on an earlier page. Just shows what CAN be done by a gifted painter. Well done with a beautifully finished Coach Victor. - So far, so good - how is the "horse" part of the project going? johnnybach

Hi All,

Thanks for your gracious comments. I'll post again when the Royal couple are finished.

Now about those horses..., my intention is to substitute modified Historex horses for the WBritains horses - I have a lot of spares. The WBritains horse castings are not entirely satisfactory, with marring of details and some hooves were missing. They also don't stand up well and really, the only solution appears to be to pin them thru their underbellies to support them.

Actually I love modelling horses. But 8 horses in harness seems like a lot of work. So a deep breath before I begin or perhaps a warming up session - Hmm, now where did I put that Yeomanry horse?

Hl All and Britfarmer,

Hi All,

Buoyed by Johhnybach's sheer enthusiasm in posting his threads especially on the Egyptian band, I was tempted to try to complete my royal coach project with the horses and a couple of walking yeomen. I re-discovered the 8 horses, 4 mounted and two yeomen, all missing right arms.

Since I had already made my own version of the royal couple, there was no reason why I couldn't adapt the existing dreary castings in the same way, not exactly replicating the originals but using them to create a personal project.

So the pics show a preliminary start and Johnnybach has supplied me with a lot of interesting pics to get started. I use epoxy putty to sculpt the pieces.

Looking forward to seeing the progress you make on these Victor. :salute::

Hi Victor - nice to see you posting again for this project. I'm very interested to see how you do with these - as - (as you know) - I recently obtained an old Britains set 1470 (State Coach) myself, which is in need of another pair of horses to make it complete - and a bit of TLC, so will be giving it a re-paint myself.

As you know, I have been collecting many pictures to help with my own project, which will basically be a restoration - but like your idea of building your unique set, very much.

Here's a few more pics that MAY help ( if not - just bin 'em) - these are of the Britains version of the Coach - but may help - as they show the missing arm with whip of the postillion rider - and also the wire clips that they used to connect the horses up.

This last one is a bit small - but shows the Coach set (1470 - with QEII) and also Set 1475 - Attendants - (which you haven't got on to yet) but has an additional figure of a brake-man added between the rear wheels of the coach. Thus there are 9 of these figures for this one - and not the 8 that Britains originally sold with this set. It also shows the 6 footmen with swords and four Yeomen.

Anyhow - good luck chum - I'll be watching with GREAT interest how you get on - and may nick a few ideas from you along the way with my own restoration - once I get my missing horses organised. johnnybach.

Hi JB and all,

thanks for that close up pic on the wire clips (now I know what they are...). I only have 2 of those (!) so will probably have to wing it again. Stay tuned.

Hi Victor - I think I may be able to help with another query. I found this pic of the State Coach with DRAW BAR connected.

As we correctly guessed from the other pics shared - that's what was under the Coach shown in the mews picture - and this is how it is connected - to fit between the first pair of horses. jb

Hi JB,

Thanks for that drawbar pic. Looks doable if I can figure out how it connects to that front pair of wheels.

I attach a pic of the two wire clips, and will probably sculpt another wire clip. A pic shows further minor modifications done to the horse as well, this time to the left back leg by lifting it a little and turning down the hoof> It hink that this is more attractive and will continue to do more.
