British and Irish Lions Rugby tour of Australia (1 Viewer)

Not as close as the previous games.

Game was livened up by somebody claiming he had taught the Aussie try scorer Shakespeare. Pretty sure he was wearing his maroon velvet jacket when he said that.

I would like to thank the management of Jack's Cinematic Big Screen Experience for the lollies and tim tam's :salute::

I may have missed it but was Folau playing ??!! Saw a comment recently about NZ team when Jonah Lomu was playing. Comment was Rugby is a team game with 14 players trying to pass the ball to Lomu.

That's the only trouble with sport Wayne, you gotta take the downs as well as the ups{sm2}:salute:: (I learned that in the 70's when we were playing you guys or the West Indies!)Your team played very well in the last test and I was surprised at the big diff in scores this time. Well played the British and Irish Lions though!

Now for the Ashes.....

Rob

Get use to that feeling again matey.................{sm4}

Always easier to be philosophical about sport when you win!

I watched with a few Treefroggers – one is an ex-pat (he shall remain nameless but let’s just say he is a big K&C fan, owns a TS shop and worked in Hong Kong for many years) - who seemed to feel that he owed his allegiance to whichever team won. He also had an extra Tim Tam (chocolate biscuit for the ignorant!) which is something of a social sin.
I also met Village Horse (Robin) who very generously treated us to a steak prior to the game. Rob, you beat us in rugby, you will probably beat us at cricket, but a steak in England is a sorry, sorry experience! I will hold onto that!

Yes, well done to the Brit's for the win, they were the best team on the night. I also have to say a big thank you to Robin for the feed and Marty for the hospitality and comfy cinema chairs, I almost fell asleep in the one that I was sitting in!

Na great win now bring on the real contest Australia V England ONLY in the cricket................{sm4}
Best thing about the Loss is Deans will get the sack and a Aussie can coach our Australian team,the way it should be.

I second that motion!
Wayne.

.....I feel your pain mate......at this rate after Deans has moved on, you might even end up with an English coach...{eek3}^&grin

Seriously though, the Lions can be a tough opponent to play, so I don't think you can be to hash on the team. I always think it's easy to blame a coach when things go wrong and the players themselves need to take stock of their performances too. In saying that Deans has had a good crack at it now with mixed results. Regardless, I certainly don't think we've seen the best of the Wallabies yet......and as for an Aussie coaching the Alblacks, hey it would never happen{sm5}

Mate if as Englishman coached the Wallabies i would give Union up all together,probably follow the All BLACKS...............{sm4}

I think the idea that you have to have a coach from the same country as the rugby team is nonsense.
Each country has s style of play that is true but you can get ossified in your way of playing and that is not a good thing.
Sometimes a coach with a new style of play can bring a new angle to a team.
Deans did not click with the Wallabies but by the sounds of things some of the players over the last few years have not really understood that it is a team sport and they need to play as part of the team.
Players also need to examine their own role in certain outcomes.

You are right of course but when things do not go right the 'foreign' coach is particularly vulnerable. When Greg Chappell coached the Indian cricket team he tried to introduce the 'Australian way' (this was when we were the number 1 team in the world) and thereby challenged the status quo. (Rob, not the band!) It all ended rather poorly. I would imagine that when a coaching position is advertised, like any job it must, in theory, go to the best candidate or an appeal is possible. Australian cricket coaches were all the rage when we were number 1 but we fell behind and paid the price. An interesting addition to the discussion is whether a national coach needs to have played the sport at the highest level.

To my mind - the person you want in charge of ANY team - is the best person for the job! --- regardles of where he or she was born - which after all is said and done - is not that person's fault!! I don't care if they come from anywhere in the World - provided they get the job done!

God forbid - but if you had a life-threatening condition - would you insist on being treated by a person only born where you come from??? NO - you would want the best!

Wales - took this idea on board quite a few years ago, swallowed hard - and then trawled the World for suitable candidates for the job - and were blessed with no fewer than three excellent Head Coaches - who just so happened to come from NZ.

Two went on to coach their national sides - Graham Henry and Steve Hansen - whilst the current Wales/British Lions Coach is Warren Gatland.

Interestingly, Gatland took a lot of media led flack before the final game in the series - when he dropped Brian O'Driscoll - and picked ten Welsh players. The result justifies (yet again) the idea of leaving professionals to get on with their jobs - and (in his case) pick the best side he thinks will do the job. I think the result of that final match - justifies that thought.

So forget all about the somewhat Xenophobical idea that you should pick only someone that was born in your country to manage/coach your national side - regardless of the Sport. If you want the best - go for them - regardless of the rather ridiculous idea that he/she should have been born in the same country. What on earth has that got to do with the most important thing - winning! jb

All true of course but this is sport and common sense doesn't prevail...:wink2: If anyone thinks the All Blacks would ever have a non Kiwi coach they're not living in the real world....:rolleyes2:
Wayne.

Sorry mate a moment of madness.........................^&grin

It's ok Wayne mate, you've revealed your inner feelings and I know deep down, like many Aussie's you're all closet Alblack fans{eek3}:wink2::salute::

Some good words there Johnny and I'd have to agree, however as Wayne points out, as a rugby mad nation the average Kiwi wouldn't be keen on a 'foreigner' coaching the national side......it really would be a hard sell.

In saying that, as a professional sport now, anything's possible, so who knows what the future holds .........
