Some good words there Johnny and I'd have to agree, however as Wayne points out, as a rugby mad nation the average Kiwi wouldn't be keen on a 'foreigner' coaching the national side......it really would be a hard sell.

In saying that, as a professional sport now, anything's possible, so who knows what the future holds .........

Toddy , they won't allow New Zealanders who play their Rugby outside of NZ to play for the AB,s so it would take a major
slump in playing fortunes to see that rule change or a coach from outside of NZ take the reigns.
But as you say who knows what will happen down the line.

Toddy as you know in the game played in heaven it works like this ......It's the All Blacks then every body else plays to decide who is second best, don't like it but facts are facts. To my mind - the person you want in charge of ANY team - is the best person for the job! --- regardles of where he or she was born - which after all is said and done - is not that person's fault!! I don't care if they come from anywhere in the World - provided they get the job done!

God forbid - but if you had a life-threatening condition - would you insist on being treated by a person only born where you come from??? NO - you would want the best!

Wales - took this idea on board quite a few years ago, swallowed hard - and then trawled the World for suitable candidates for the job - and were blessed with no fewer than three excellent Head Coaches - who just so happened to come from NZ.

Two went on to coach their national sides - Graham Henry and Steve Hansen - whilst the current Wales/British Lions Coach is Warren Gatland.

Interestingly, Gatland took a lot of media led flack before the final game in the series - when he dropped Brian O'Driscoll - and picked ten Welsh players. The result justifies (yet again) the idea of leaving professionals to get on with their jobs - and (in his case) pick the best side he thinks will do the job. I think the result of that final match - justifies that thought.

So forget all about the somewhat Xenophobical idea that you should pick only someone that was born in your country to manage/coach your national side - regardless of the Sport. If you want the best - go for them - regardless of the rather ridiculous idea that he/she should have been born in the same country. What on earth has that got to do with the most important thing - winning! jb

Jake White made use of Eddie Jones in 2006-2007 and won the world cup so I agree with you.
Less parochial xenophobia is what is needed in professional sport.

I think the idea that you have to have a coach from the same country as the rugby team is nonsense.
Each country has s style of play that is true but you can get ossified in your way of playing and that is not a good thing.
Sometimes a coach with a new style of play can bring a new angle to a team.
Deans did not click with the Wallabies but by the sounds of things some of the players over the last few years have not really understood that it is a team sport and they need to play as part of the team.
Players also need to examine their own role in certain outcomes.

Absolutely agree. Its extremely narrow minded to think you shouldnt cast your net wider to try and get the best for your team . Whatever next next? We only want a white middle age man from a one mile vicinity of the training ground who was born on a thursday?! Rubbish. Go for who may produce the best results for your team and your country. Surely open mindednes and tolerance gives you a greater chance of victory.

I would also describe Wales as "A Rugby Mad Nation" - and Wales took on board the notion of "Pick the best man for the job of Coach" - many years ago now. Sure, there was a great deal of argument then - and there still is in some quarters today. BUT.....the results for the side slowly began to change in a positive direction - and these days - the side is back again as a top side - at least - in the Northern hemisphere. Note also, that the side that made a dramatic change in the match result in Oz recently, contained ten of the Welsh side - and was picked against howls of protests from people who frankly should have known better, by Gatland - the current Wales head Coach - and a former All black himself.

Look at the last World Cup - where but for one refereeing decision, where the Welsh Captain was red-carded for a "dangerous tackle", we could possibly have had a Wales v All Black final. That's how far they have come - with a "foreign" coach.

I haven't always liked the way that the All Blacks play the game - but one thing I have always admired, and continue to do so, is the sheer professionalism of their whole set-up. Nothing is left to chance - and I'm pretty sure that if they ever do start on a downward spiral (which is unlikely) - they would change strategy in an eye-blink. As things stand though - they have one of the best coaching/analytical set-ups in the World - and an abundance of talented players/coaches - so there should be no need at all for any changes in their Coaching/playing personnel at all. That's why so many of them go overseas for coaching jobs - and as a Welshman - I'm very glad that they do. jb
