Cafe Storme Mokarex figures (1 Viewer)

I drilled away the solid plastic and separated the two halves of the bishop's mitre.

Victor,

I have one of those drummers too .... I've used black leather for the belts and brown leather protector apron for the drum.

John is correct, about the gaiters, which should be black. Victor is correct that the belt is brown. Here are some photos of my actual 1914 Poilu Uniform:

Hi Louis,

Thanks for your inputs. Good call. I'll be repainting the gaiters and boots black. I believe that the belts could be brown or black.

I've finished painting two more figures. The final presentation can be vastly improved with care taken in painting the figure. Hence, every brushstroke counts. The reduced pics don't really show the richness or nuances of the painting.

I've discovered that painting with a W&N size 0 for oils is extremely pleasurable. This brush size can also be used to paint eye details.

Hi all,

Here's the poilu with black gaiters and boots. I also looked at references for the drum apron. I had also collected numerous images of French drummers and drum majors from the internet.

The pics suggest that leather aprons were worn from around the revolutionary and Napoleonic period onwards. I could not find anything showing a leather apron but where it can be seen, there were quite a number of white aprons. There was a single drawing showing an all black apron, straps and drum sling from the Franco-Prussian war period.

So I've left the white apron as it is for now.

Refurbishing these two figs. Andre Chenier and Lazare Carnot.

Carnot is not finished. I noticed that the sword hilt and scabbard do not line up. Got to substitute this part.

I substituted a Historex sword for this figure and then decided to build up the back of the figure to create a fuller torso.

I've completed Lazare Carnot. The converted figure looks better. Like I said before, it was a pleasure to slap oil colours with a fancy W&N brush.

During a lull between projects, I picked up this Julius Caesar piece and pondered - yet another Julio figure? There are over 50 roman emperors and according to the latest research, their likenesses could differ from bust to bust. Apparently, Roman busts were batch produced to quickly replace existing statue heads when a new Roman Emperor took over. Some busts were simply recycled, chip off the nose, brows here and there. I came across a nice comparative chart showing their proposed likeness.

The best hit for me was Vespasian, the one who took over eventually after Nero.

So in traditional Roman style, I loped off the head of Julius and repositioned it. He is now Vespasian. I'll be ptg the figure now.

Completed Vespasian. Made him look older as he became Emperor late in life.

The folds on the back were resculpted as the original figure was rather thin.

Finished these two pieces and with labelling. These Mokarex Cafe Storme figures are certainly very enriching figures to collect. The range exposes one to diverse and niche periods of European history.

I started to paint this cafe storms figure. Henri 1 de Brabant. His coat of arms was a lion rampant azure on a black bkgd. So I’ve painted an elongated lion on his surcoat.
