Castings I have painted (1 Viewer)

Okay Big Al and Martin - the double act worked - it's on a plane as I write from Amazon to me. Looks right up my street, this one - and half-price swung the deal. Can't resist a bargain. Thanks both, johnnybach

Just had a thought - should have called this thread " Varnished Armies" - jb

I guarantee you won't regret it, if you do I'll have it off you to use as a spare for when I wear this one out!:D

Not a bad idea for a name if there was enough interest. As you may have noticed I do like all things British Army (even the Blues!) :D And that's slowly vanishing!

One really essential book is "British Army Uniforms in Color 1908-1919" it contains most of the original illustrations by Harry Payne, Ibbotson, McNeil and Holloway. It is a Schiffer publication and therefore quite expensive but it is well worth the price. All the originals are from the Anne Brown collection. Trooper.

Here's an interesting site. It belongs to a photo journalist that took pictures of HCR mounted when in temporary stables at Wellington Bks. In case you're wondering the horses standing in the middle of the band are young remount being tried out with the noise, if they react badly to that or the flags waved in their faces, there's ar problem!:D

Example from the book mentioned in my last. Trooper

I have a distinct liking for Harry Payne's work too. I often go to "Military Print" web-sites just for a look-see. If that's an example, trooper - again it looks like my sort of book. It's on the list!

Yes - I'm afraid it's (mostly) British Army for me too Martin. dreadful affliction I know - with no known antidote - unless...............Rugby's on.........I might try(sic) a small drop of scottish antidote.

Thanks both - johnnybach

The uniforms and History of the Scottish Regiments by Major R.M. Barnes

And a couple of books called "Simpkins Soldier". Volume 1 Cavalry. Volume 2 Infantry. Published by the Victorian Military Society I believe, full of detail and pictures.

Gwent Dragons 28 - Sale 20. Final score.

I'm writing furiously - as there's a lot here to remember. I will need to have a look at the "Simkins" stuff - because I already have quite a few books & downloads from him - he's just about my favourite artist - and an excellent source for most of the figures I like best. I will look for a lot of these when I'm in the UK next too. There's a huge "Bookbarn" near us - and a little chap who has a stall in the market (near the "geezer's" stall). - who has some surprise finds occasionally. Found the book on German uniforms from him.

Still - if I get stuck - good to know who I might approach for the occasional special picture. Like-wise, if I can help with a pic from my growing references - just shout. If I have it - just ask - may take a while for me to work out how to copy and post - but I'm a quick learner.

Thanks for advice - liked the pics of the horses. johnnybach

This book is one that I have found most useful. It's a tiny thing - but full of useful information - and get this - it cost me ONE PENNY plus postage from Amazon! Probably most useful for a beginner - like me.

That's actualy a nice little book, it is a good start because it's right. We all started somewhere and as far as my uniform information is concerned, like Stella said "I have often relied on the kindness of strangers":D:D

Hey me too :) Thanks !!

Altogether now

(sing along)

" Hold my hand - I'm a stranger in paradise"

We must stop meeting like this! johnnybach:eek:

This is getting silly now:D:D:D On a serious note though, if it hadn't been for the books of Major Roy Diley in my local library when I was a kid, I don't think I would have even considered converting figures. That then led on to what I do now. I'm only glad that I have had the chance to meet Roy Diley and tell him that!

Ah! Now that IS a very useful one for me. I have some dragoon figures put away for making up and adding on to my Imperial Guards. I intended to make them up as some of the different (and colourful) foot Regiments - with drummers for the footies - and trumpeters for the horsey types. I have been scouting around - and was going to use the Historex cards ( nicked from an Aussie gents web-site!). That book might be just the ticket. I'll check it out tomorrow. Thanks for the tip Martin.
