Changes coming to ebay UK first, including to start charging buyers fee next year. (1 Viewer)

As someone who sells on eBay, I will be glad to see that come to the US. Buyers already pay sales tax so I don’t believe this should be much of a deterrent to purchases. I’m sure eBay wouldn’t be doing this unless the competition had forced them to do that.

Sure, in the US it's a bit different the way things are priced. here the price ticket says X amount which will include any tax applicable and that's what you pay, rather than what I remember from visits to America about having to factor in the various amounts of state tax, to add to the ticket price and so I think when it does start on ebay here in UK, it will cause a little bit of blustering and indignation for a week or two, then people will realise that if they want something they are going to have to pay the fee, ebay will be charging !

Basically, eBay is the biggest game in town so whatever they decide we will have no choice although I gather how the big sellers feel may influence their decision making.

I'm a business seller, so I still have to pay fees, but private/part time sellers won't have to?

That makes less than zero sense; should be the other way around.

And no more automated pay outs; so now I have to request withdrawals?

That sucks.

Not to mention whacking buyers with fees; they pay sales tax, shipping and now buyer fees?

Bad, bad, bad.

There goes that platform.

Looks like it will eventually effect US buyers and sellers as well. Yeah so ebay will no doubt be making interest on the Millions and more that many people who sell occasionally on ebay and will leave with ebay, expecting to use it to buy whatever at some future date, because, well it's just a few ... to them, multiplied by several million users it will all add up to extra profits !

At the end of the day, everything these companies do benefits them and only them; there is no upside to having to request them to send me my money and yes, the occasional sellers will leave the money there for until when they want to buy something, meanwhile Ebay makes money on interest.

Charging buyers a fee means less sales at the end of the day, not more, so you're rewarding the occasional seller by eliminating selling fees and hurting buyers and full time retailers by adding buying fees.

What they are trying to do it get more small time sellers involved "Oh gee, no fees, let me unload that pair of shoes I never wore"...............

Great, what a moronic idea.

As Brad said, they are the only game in town, so either you deal with it or stop selling there; for me to do that would be the classic cutting off my nose to spite my face.

We'll see what the buyer fee actually works out to; I thought when they started charging sales tax that would be a disaster, but I weathered that fine, no problem.

Their ball, their rules, so I have no other choice but to wait and see what happens.

Dont sellers already factor in the selling fee into their prices so itt makes no difference if the buyer pays that fee anyway .

No, I don't factor in my selling fees into my prices, where did you get that information?

If I want 100.00 for something, that price has nothing to do with what my fees are.

I wasn't specifically aiming that comment at you . I know that when i used to sell on ebay and amazon i raised the price of my items to cover any costs . It was one of the reasons why i dropped both channels and purely sell through my website now as i didnt like running multiple prices for the same objects .

I don’t do it either. It’s a cost of doing business.

The items I sell for the most part have a set MSRP price, I can't raise it to cover anything, people will simply buy the item elsewhere and accuse me of price gouging.

Selling costs no matter the platform are a cost of doing business, whether it be travel expenses to a show, Ebay selling fees or "free shipping" there's nothing "free" about it except for the buyer.

In my opinion, this is probably never going to apply to a large amount of the ebay community. When you hear the details, it is less than 300 listings (which is undefined at this moment on how that calculation works). The payout only affects private sellers. They want to keep that money onsite, doesn't affect anyone who is not a private seller. Now, it is unfair that they don't pay fees, sure, but I am just not sure how much it really affects everything as a whole.

The difference is that i import around 80% of my products from the US and Japan so by the time i have paid freight and import duty and then when i sell i also pay 20% VAT it was the only way to protect the margins . I will always beat msrp on UK products but make the money on the imports that no one else sells in the UK

Sellers in the UK and Europe are at a huge disadvantage due to VAT and import duties, we don't pay those in the US.

YET.

When they day comes, peace out for me, I'm not going to eat 20% nor do I expect collectors to absorb those costs, so much for socialized medicine.

That money has to come from somewhere.

Yes don't some states have a sales tax? I think there are only 5 that do not have some form of sales tax, which is in some way what VAT is? It is only Americans that call it Socialised Medicine, we call it a National Health Service, we know it is not free and the money comes out of Taxes/National Insurance paid on our wages. It is heavily supported in the UK and i for one do not mind paying my taxes for it. Never paid for healthcare, friends and relatives paid nothing to the hospital to have a child, very very few people here go bankrupt because they become ill and have to pay for medical care. If anyone in the US gets a few minutes, then just put in 'Americans living in Europe and healthcare' into Youtube and listen to what they have to say to see what your fellow Americans think.

However, this thread is about evilbay, will be interesting to see just how they start to categorise a business seller, I sold around £11k last year on there, was slimming down my collection, lets see if they change the classification of some people when their sales get too high. Did spend close to £8K on stuff from there, best places for books New & 'Preloved', way better, in my opinion, than Amazon.

If you sold £11K on there I’d say that’s good-bay.

One of the issues Barkmann omits about NHS is it is another attraction for illegal immigrants in that they get free healthcare and as an example in consequence the number of new reports of HIV has now doubled in the past year, being brought into the Country by illegal immigrants mostly from Africa seeking HIV treatment, which is quite expensive and expecting the tax payers of this country to stump up. It is hardly surprising that some thousands of those in position to leave are doing so, and as the current regime continue to put the screws on, more will leave. And as to their pre election promises, which they are already starting to break, it won't surprise me if the basic rate of income tax rises from it's current level back up to the 34% it was when I first started work and the middle classes paying the higher of 60% instead of the 40% now.
Labour's obsession with net zero us another burden that is costing thousands of manufacturing jobs. All just an illusion, with the same emissions being produced, just in other countries.
