College Football - finally (1 Viewer)

Finally, the big shootout is tonight. I'm hoping to see a trackmeet with lots of scoring (contrary to my preference for well played defensive games) and with Auburn coming out on top. Guess I'm sort of an SEC fan in support of my brother, who graduated from 'Bama (yes, I know Auburn is the mortal enemy of Bama), so go SEC! -- Al

This may be the best match up since USC-Texas. Should be a great one, but you never know with college football. Nothing would surprise me. Most people seem to be leaning toward Auburn because they play a tougher schedule in the SEC. But Oregon is scary good on offense and probably has a better D than Auburn. It will be interesting to see if Team Nike's hurry-up offense wears down Auburn in the second half. Oregon has started slow in many games and then crushed teams down the stretch. One thing Oregon does better than any other team is block downfield with their wide receivers. A ten yd run goes for 40+ because the receivers take out their guys. Oregon needs those big plays to win tonight.

Oregon just blew this game when they stopped defending.

Don't know what was the point of Auburn going for it on first down at the 1 but it worked out.

A good game. It could have gone either way. I think Oregon has the advantage if it went to OT with their offense and the way Newton was limping around. Kudos to the Auburn D and particularly their front four in shutting down Oregon most of the night. Now it's time for the NCAA to rule Newton ineligible and void the entire season.

Well, it wasn't the high scoring game I was hoping to see, but it was close and entertaining. Never would have thought the defenses would have played so well. Congrats to Auburn. -- Al

Someone told me today watching that game was like watching a second grade team take on a fifth grade team. Auburn was noticeably bigger and stronger than Oregon. The Auburn D-line dominated most of the night. Oregon played gutsy and took some chances, but if Newton wasn't injured Auburn probably wins by at least two TDs.

A 35 day layoff is moronic, both teams looked sloppy, not to mention the field, it was a skating rink, why don't they open the dome up, moisture from all the humidity inside the stadium builds up on the field as a result.

Not that it matters, but those Oregon uniforms were God AWFUL, what was the deal with those socks?

Haven't watched much of Oregon, but what's with all the high school trick plays, fake punts, going for two on the first TD, they played like they were huge underdogs, not the #2 team in the nation.

Both QB's looked hot and cold too; oh well, time to put college football to bed.............

I agree with you on the 35 days off. I see alot of Ducks games, and the teams that have less than a week to prepare have a tough time dealing with them. The field was terrible. Every gardener in the world will tell you it takes 2 weeks for sod to take hold. As far as trick places, every coach loves to try and catch the other coach napping. The uniforms are part of the recriuting process, Oregon never gets the best players in the country like USC and Florida, besides the guys on the team love it.

There must be something in the air or water west of the Big Muddy, what with blue football fields and day-glo uniforms.:D -- Al

The field negated the team speed for both teams, specifically Oregon, which relies on speed.

And why play two bowl games in the same place, OU played UConn there already this year, pretty stupid.

Matthews was a beast last night, what genes that family has, a father and two sons who are superb football players.

The D line of Auburn was huge, what depth they have rotating players in and out, too bad the Oregon coach went for it on 4th and goal as had he kicked a field goal there, what a decision Auburn would have had at the end; go for the tie for overtime or go for the win with 10 seconds left.

Phil Knight, a co-founder of Nike, gives Oregon a ton of money. In return they have to wear his space suits and name every building on campus after one of his relatives. He even has a "locker" with the rest of the team. Kind of funny or pathetic depending on how you look at it.

I'll go with pathetic.................he gives them money with conditions, that is not right; either give the school money or don't but in the process, don't hold them hostage either.............

Oregon has a tradition of having the ugliest uniforms on the west coast. They are actually proud of being weird.

One of the announcers referred to their uniform as a "costume" last night prior to the game starting.

Iv'e seen quite a few variations, remind me of the Oakland A's and Pittsburg Pirates of the 70's, numerous color combinations, I think at one point the A's had about 8 different possible uniform combinations..........

They've always had that yellow and lime green haven't they?? I seem to recall Steve Prefontaine running around in one- I could be wrong though.

They play a "video game" style of football. Big plays, trick plays, high scoring, fast paced. The uniforms play into that mind set. For us old schoolers, it looks silly, but I'm sure many 18 year old recruits like it.

Well Al, what do you think of UMD coaching staff? Gary Crowton is the new offensive coord. He has a great resume. Wonder why he left LSU. Defensive coord is staying, also good news. So Terps have pretty good staff although not so sure about Edsall. Chris

Chris, I don't know what to think yet. The assistant staff looks good. I never was a real Freidgen supporter but I do think that canning him after the season he had made the UMd look bad. Honors such as ACC Coach of the Year and winning a bowl game don't usually get you fired. I will withhold my opinion on the new coach but the new AD gets immediate "dolt" status for the way Ralph was handled. Here's hoping all works out ok. -- Al

Agree 100% Al, the way they got rid of Freidgen showed a lack of class to a coach that gave a lot to the program. That said, I'm not sorry to see him and Franklin gone. Coaching cost MD the Miami and almost (unbelievably) the NC State games. The program went down hill the last 5 yrs and it was time for a change. Chris
