College Football - finally (1 Viewer)

You speaketh the exacta truth! My old ties confirm the above is exactly how it went down. You can count my family as not renewing after 30 plus years. I have ties to FSU and MD and I hate to say it, but I "retired" my ties with Maryland a few years back when I cancelled my own tix. Debbie Yow nearly destroyed the revenue producing sports there, I could not stand her, I don't know about this new guy, but I am not holding out hope either. It pains me to say it, but they always are on the outside looking in on the football field. Basketball I will continue to watch as long as Gary is there!

As for football.........GO FSU NOLES tomorrow night, I hope we pummel Spurrier, I still see a Gator when I see that guy, just can't stand him.

I agree Tom. Yow never had a clue and was a disaster. I think Friedgen got something of a raw deal although if you take away his first three years (when the team was recruited by prior coach to a large degree), his overall record was only two games over .500. Ralph wasn't the answer and is better off away from UMd. anyway. Until someone in charge puts the time and effort (and money) into building the football program, UMd. is always going to be an also ran, with a half empty Byrd stadium. Where are Ross and Claiborne when you need them? -- Al

...Each year, the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowls are now PLAYOFF games, what a concept.

I've been saying that for years now. I think they should still have more than 8 teams as all the talent would eventually gravitate towards the perrennials. Ican't see why we can't just shorten the season by 2 regular season games and have a 64 game tournament. You could space each game out every other weekend as well.

Still, thrilled as pie that Army won their bowl game- first one they've been to since 1996.

Agree 100%, I met Bobby at age 5 and thought he was "da man", Jerry, I met years later and thought he was a great guy too. I always loved Lefty too!

Darn shame what is going on there. The whole dadgum place is all about not offending anyone, well, guess what, now that the money dried up, guess they are going to start trying to act like a contender, again, I am not too sure just yet. I hate to say this, but it is the truth, alumni drive colleges and if you are not Harvard, then you need to get alumni interested in sports. SPORTS PAYS for a lot of the University's success/opportunity. Don't let anyone fool you any differently, it is big business. The kids are put out there to play the game and have a great time, it is marketing the alumni.

sorry to sound cynical, but when you have been a part of NCAA athletics and have an inside view, all the sportsmanship stuff you learned in rec league doesn't cut it and doesnt mean squat.

This what Friedgen had to say "I think there's a lot of things that really have to change to help [Maryland] reach its potential, and to be honest with you, I don't know if the university is willing to do that." Chris

I said years ago we had the chance when I was there to hire Danny Ford or Jackie Sherrill, they passed on both, said they were outlaws. Well, if memory serves me, Ford brought back the Arkansas program from near death and Jackie did the same for Mississippi State. Hmm.......instead we hired Mark Duffner (who by the way a great guy but not cut out for college head coach).

Again, I meant to say in my earlier post they "don't" put the kids on the field to play for the love of the game, they put them out there to market, ie if you win, you draw back in the crowds, alumni and bottom line MONEY.

Hopefully, looking at the glass half full, MD will try to bring it back.

It would be nice to put a power program on the field along with Gary Williams and the B-ball team. Remember when UMd. had the reputation as a QB factory? Put a lot of them into the NFL. I'm sure Boomer and Randy White would like to see the Terps be a factor again. We should be contending for the ACC title every year, in both football and basketball. -- Al

Time to pick the big ones:

Rose - Wisconsin and TCU. Wisconsin is playing as well as anyone in the country. TCU is good, but not good enough to stop the power run game. Wisconsin 42 TCU 27.

Fiesta - UConn and Oklahoma. A real stinker. OK rolls 59-17.

Orange - Stanford and Va Tech. Va Tech has no business in a BCS bowl. They could still win, but Stanford takes them 38-24.

Sugar - Ohio St and Arkansas. More NCAA BS allowing five OSU players to play in the bowl while suspending them for five games next year. Even though they could go pro and avoid any punishment. Hard to make that stuff up. It makes me pull for Arkansas. Ark 30 OSU 13.

BCS Championship - Oregon and Auburn. Should be a good game. Team Nike against the $EC. Oregon peaked mid-season and struggled against weak PAC teams like Cal. Auburn seems to be on fire. Cam gets it done in the clutch and Auburn wins 44-41.

A small school like Miss State (wife's school), granted SEC, can get FL offensive coordinator and turn program around in two yrs and make a New Year's day bowl. MD should be competitive for top coaches available, especially with fine young quaterback for the future. Yow was a bust as an AD, as mentioned here earlier. Hopefully, new AD can get past his gaffe and move program fwd. Chris

OSU allowed them to play in the bowl if they "promised" not to turn pro and come back and play next year, which will hurt their draft status as they'll have to sit out five games; if I were anyone of them, I'd say thanks but no thanks and go pro.

NCAA=a pathetic joke............

A way for Tressel to save face. When they go pro anyway he will put the blame on them for not keeping their word. And take credit for the bowl win.

You all are pretty cynical this early in the new year. I believe that the NCAA always has the best interest of the students at heart and money doesn't enter into it (well, maybe a little bit).:p:eek:;):D:D:D:D: -- Al

Absolutely, the NCAA does not care about money one bit, it's all about the competition and keeping things fare and square.

Speaking of which, not sure if any of you have seen any of the "30 for 30" shows ESPN puts on, but they are brilliant. One focused on Reggie Dupree and the recruiting war that went of for his services, another on the rise and fall of SMU football, and a third on the "U" in the mid to late 80's and all the nonsense that went on down there.

Speaking of the "U", the Catholics beat the Convicts yesterday in the Sun Bowl.............

Looks like the Michigan teams should have stayed away from the SEC today. Neither game has been a contest at all. Penn St. and Florida got a good one going. -- Al

I am still scratching my head on how UConn gets into the Fiesta bowl!!!! How'd that happen??

I'm taking OU 60-0

Terrible day for the Big 10. 0-4 against the southern boys and 0-3 against the SEC. I suppose Wisconsin might be able to save the honor of the Big 10 if they can get by TCU. We shall see in a few minutes. -- Al

Well, it's official. The Big 10 sucks. They went 0-5 against the southeners on the day, 0-3 against the SEC and 0-2 against the Texas teams. Maybe the Big 10 should leave those southern boys alone. -- Al

OU pounds UConn, they are loaded with young talent, should be in the hunt next year for the national championship............love that team and that coach.
