College Football - finally (3 Viewers)

Ralph Friedgen ACC Coach of the Year. How about that Al? Looks like MD heads to the Military Bowl or some other obscurity. Wash Post cites lack of fan support during the year.
It's great Ralph won. He deserves it with the turn-around UMd. had this year. O'Brien won the rookie or freshman o' the year award, as well. All in all a good season. They will end up in the Military Bowl, here in DC, from the sounds of it. At least the fans won't have far to go, but the question is will they go? Anyway, Ralph saved his job for a while. Go UMD.! -- Al

With VaTech winning over FSU, only Neb. losing to Ok. ruined my forecast record, and Neb. should have won but the old turnover curse killed them. Leaves me 7-1 on last two weeks choices. Too bad I don't bet, but sure as sunrise the first time I wager money I will go 1-7. Can't wait for the Auburn-Oregon game. First impulse is to pick Auburn, but I will wait on this. After all, the game is a month away. -- Al

This Sunday I received, as a gift from a Navy Commander friend of mine (only flaw :p) his six tickets to the Army Navy game and tailgate event. I am deeply moved as he and I were talking smack to each other all year and he stated this might be his only shot at ever going. He told me to take my wife and kids and get away from everything that is going on. I know at some point I will be in tears watching this and everything it means to me (hopefully not crying at the final score!! :D).

FWIW- He is a huge RedSox fan- has little red sox logos embrodiered on the head rests of his car.

Anyway, GO ARMY

Sounds like a GREAT guy to me.........he must be thrilled, the Sox got Adrian Gonzales, perhaps the best or second best (at worst) first baseman in all of baseball AND the Yankees gave a 37 year old Derek Jeter 51 million over 3 years.

Wow.

17 million a year for a 270 hitting shortstop who can't go to his left anymore..............

Didn't mean to hijack the thread; Chris, after what you and your family have been through, go and have a great time..............

That's just fine bud- I baited you into that anyway :p;)

FWIW- I think the Pats, on the other hand, look like a machine!!

Agreed; and to think most around here saw this as a rebuilding year, a chance to retool the entire defense......BB is the best coach in the NFL, not a close second, three Super Bowl wins in four years, undefeated regular season in 2007, went 11-5 without Brady in 2008 and now this, 10-2 so far with a patchwork D line, three rookie starting linebackers and a rookie CB with a JAG on the other side and on offense, two undrafted free agent starting running backs.

Favorite game of the year on Saturday, The Army-Navy game. Never been to one but I watch every year and I don't think I've missed one since before Staubach played for Navy. Great tradition, sportsmanship, and the two academies are the best. GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY! -- Al

Great gift and friend. Enjoy the game, Chris. Wear an Army jacket to the game and I'll watch for you in the crowd.:D. -- Al

Navy wins 9th in a row against Army. Navy now leads the all time series 55-49, with 7 ties. Navy actually trailed in the series 46-49-7 when their current win streak started. What a great series this is. They have played 111 times and only 6 wins seperate the two teams. My favorite college game every year, and I have been watching since 1962ish. All I can say is may they play another 111 times and GO NAVY! -- Al

Well, it was a great game and I had a blast. Was surrounded by Navy guys and in typical fashion, was hounding them hard. Then Steelman FUMBLES!!! I'm glad my face was covered in cammo as the red would've shown all the way to LA. :D

Before the game, the Golden Knights Army Parachute team (and some Navy SEALs) dropped in to say hello. The one Army jumper had over 5500 jumps!! That'a a jump a day, every day for 15 years!!

Now it looks like Friedgen is on his way out. That's a surprise. They apparently are forcing him out to bring in Mike Leach. Hopefully, there are no closets in MD.

Congratulations to UMd. for their slaughter of East Carolina in the Military Bowl yesterday. First half was kind of slow then Md. got going and wins in a romp, 51-20. Farewell to Ralph, (I am not a big fan), but he did a remarkable job this year, turning a 2-10 2009 team into a 9-4 bowl winner this year. What's next for UMd.'s football program? June Jones said no. Leach? We shall see. -- Al

I saw his farewell talk in the locker room. Is he retiring or was he pushed?

The new AD refused to renew Ralph's contract. He got pushed out. His offensive coach, who supposedly was the "coach in waiting", was told he would not get the job either, so he left too. It was a "business" decision based on falling home attendence and unsold luxury boxes at Byrd stadium. UMd.'s home attendence has fallen an average of 10% a year for 4 years in a row. I guess the new AD just wants new people. -- Al

I have a feeling Alabama will beat our Michigan State Spartans Saturday in Orlando. Nick Saban use to be Michigan State's coach. Alabama is a 10 point favorite but don't under estimate Michigan State.

John- I think it's dead even between Mich St and Alabama. They are always very very good in the bowls.

Bowl season=snooze festival, unless you attended or have ties to one of the schools playing.

How many bowls so far with a 6-6 team vs a 7-5 team; you should have AT LEAST an 8-4 record to go to a bowl, end of story, how many bowls are there anyway, 421? Weed whacker bowl, Humanitarian Bowl, Outback Bowl, Toilet Bowl, talk about beating a dead horse.

The NCAA is a farce, a complete and utter joke, think about how much more interesting these bowls would be if there was a playoff system in place.

How about this; divide the country up into 8 conferences, the winner of each goes to the playoffs. Each year, the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowls are now PLAYOFF games, what a concept.

Nope, the NCAA is too busy suspending kids for getting free tatoos................

You speaketh the exacta truth! My old ties confirm the above is exactly how it went down. You can count my family as not renewing after 30 plus years. I have ties to FSU and MD and I hate to say it, but I "retired" my ties with Maryland a few years back when I cancelled my own tix. Debbie Yow nearly destroyed the revenue producing sports there, I could not stand her, I don't know about this new guy, but I am not holding out hope either. It pains me to say it, but they always are on the outside looking in on the football field. Basketball I will continue to watch as long as Gary is there!

As for football.........GO FSU NOLES tomorrow night, I hope we pummel Spurrier, I still see a Gator when I see that guy, just can't stand him.

Friedgen would not have been good for the long haul and could not recruit with one yr remaining on contract. Nice for him to leave with bowl win against worst defense in div 1 football. Terrible coaching in Miami game resulted in loss and almost same in NC State game.

Good news, O'Brien is staying, bad news Torrey Smith heads to NFL draft.

Watching the Pinstripe Bowl. Kansas State scores to make it a 2 point game and the WR slautes the crowd and they hit him with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Unbelievable. Costs Kansas State realistic chance to make the 2 point conversion and they lose. Someone needs to read these idiots the riot act.
