College Football - finally (2 Viewers)

Wow - Northwestern came back to take down Iowa.

Since I grew up a staunch Hawkeye, I have some calls to make to buddies back home!

Northwestern is looking good this year. I was rooting for them. Big Win. John

Wow! UMd gets a big win in Charlotteville, where they trouble winning. Won with a big 4th quarter. I think they looked pretty good and will now get a bowl bid. Congrats to the Terps. Navy wins also, but by the skin of their teeth 38-37 and thanks to Cent. Mich. going for a 2 pt. conversion instead of the tie. Watched Penn St. get crushed by OSU. Talk about a Jeckel and Hyde performance, this was it. PSU led 14-3 at the half and then apparantly took the bus home and left OSU to score 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half. Ugly. Still got to watch SC-Fla and Bama-MSU. -- Al

Yeah, ok- we get it :D:p

Couple of odd plays that teams like OSU can make- big time plays like that bomb bouncing out of the one receivers hands and into the others- then the two pics- just take a little of that and the momentum swings and heads south quickly.

Still am happy though- Army beat Kent State- first bowl since 1996- in fact- first season in College football history where all three academies are going to a bowl. We got ND this Saturday and then the big dance with Navy.

Oregon at Cal. Cal is truly unpredictable. Get blown out one week and do the reverse the next week. Team Nike is the greatest team of all time. No better reason to pick against them. Cal pulls an upset with the Ducks looking ahead to AZ and Oregon St.

Cal's kicker double clutches on a gimme field goal, makes it, gets called for illegal procedure, move it back 5 yards, he shanks it, they lose the game by 2.

Unreal.

#2 Auburn loses in the SEC Championship game and WOW!!, we get either TCU or Boise St vs the Quacks, I'm getting all amped up for that game, final score Quacks 96-0.

When is the National Championship game anyway, Memorial Day?

Nope, no reason for a playoff in college football..................

Auburn is 11-0 but I am not real impressed with them, especially the so called defense. Auburn gives up almost 26 points per game, which IMO is really bad for an 11-0 team with championship dreams. Auburn has to play Bama in the Iron Bowl next, and I suspect this weakness is going to cost them dearly. Hidden in that 11-0 record are a trio of 3 point wins and 4 games where Auburn has given up 31 or more points. I think they will not stay undefeated much longer. -- Al

Army- Notre Dame this weekend- Maryland and FSU. Good regional matchups- I'm taking the Black Knights!!

Northwestern plays at Wrigley Field tomorrow...should be interesting. The goal post is attached to the right field wall, so don't run TOO far out of that end zone!

Yikes! That set-up looks ripe for disaster. Don't see much chance for a Lambeau type leap, either. I foresee horizontal end zone routes. -- Al

I can remember when the goal posts were placed just beyond the goal line. It seems crazy now that they had them there. On to the picks - someone could make a lot of money betting against the teams I pick to win each week.

#9 Ohio St. at #20 Iowa - Iowa is tough at home. So let's go with them.

Army at ND - at Yankee stadium. Should be an interesting throwback setting. ND seems to have found a QB and wins ugly.

#25 Florida St. at MD - FSU just has too many athletes. MD keeps it close then FSU puts it on them late.

#6 Stanford at Cal - Cal almost got Team Nike last week. They are Jekyll and Hyde, but play well at home. So they might get one this week. Cal in an upset.

I gotta agree with across the board- I think Iowa is much better than they are rated. Though for sentimental reasons, I take Army :) A couple weeks back, when ND was struggling, I think it was army all the way, still think it will be much much closer than the current line.

At least students used to fill up their side of the field in our day. What's the capacity now?

Wake made O'Brien look good but I think he will have a good career at UM with more experience.
Finally found the capacity at Byrd. It is 54,000 plus 64 luxury suites. This year, UMd sold only 19,000 season tickets and leased only 2/3 of the suites. Not very impressive. Last years 2-10 record was a disaster for this years ticket sales. During Ralph's tenure, 3 of the 5 smallest crowds have occurred this season. The smallest was in Sept., this year, against Fla. Int., when the crowd was 33,254. They expect around 45-47,000 tonight against FSU. This counts 19,000 season tickets, 10,000 students, 2,000 free give-aways. UMd has fallen below 40,000 three times this season. All these empty seats will have an influence on the Bowl committees. If Ralph can beat FSU and get to the ACC championship game, maybe they can get some more fans in the seats. Go UMd! -- Al

At the last minute the Big 10 decided this endzone wasn't safe, so all plays will go in one direction (away from it). Sounds a bit like a backyard game...we'll see if the defensive line counts to 5 Mississippi before rushing!

Not counting on a win tonight, but maybe if they play mistake free... Good chance against NC State. They need one of the last two for a good bowl bid.

More NCAA craziness. USC player suspended for golf cart ride:

Athletic Director Pat Haden said Friday night that Dillon Baxter had accepted a ride in a golf cart on campus Thursday and that one of the people on the cart was a student who is a registered sports agent.

Haden said the NCAA, the NFL Players Assn. and USC's Office of Student Affairs had been notified.

Haden said that NCAA rules define the cart ride as an extra benefit. But he said that after an NCAA review and determination of the value of the ride, he hoped to have Baxter's eligibility restored by next week.

They came close, getting to the 19 yd. line with a chance to tie, but then the fatal error of the pick 6. Had a big crowd of 48,115 on hand to watch another heartbreaker. Maybe we can take NCSt. next and end on a high note with a decent Bowl game, as you said. I didn't care for the black uniforms or the "black out" concept. Looked like the unis were designed by crazy people with no real idea where to go with them. Made it hard for me to follow the players. I am not a big Ralph fan but I got to congratulate him for this years results after last season. Now, if we could just win a big game... -- Al

Didn't get to watch the game. :( UofL basketball was on locally instead of the Terps. Will be a very good season if they beat NCS. The uniforms you mention remind me of some of the weird combos VA Tech has shown this year.

As most of you know, I am a Terp but have a very strong Seminole connection, therefore I couldn't lose Saturday. That said, I thought the Terps blew this one, they seemed to have more momentum in a back and forth game, but Terps didn't put up points when opportunity arose, the Noles did. I also really didn't care for the play calling offensively late 3rd and 4th qtrs. IMO, that didn't help. I still am slightly sour on my alma mater.
