Connoisseur Figures (1 Viewer)

Hey Guys,
Not much action on this thread for a couple of days so I thought I would throw up a photo of one of my figures. It is a piece from Arsenyev Studios and depicts an early Muslim warrior. I bought it years ago from Thor at the Chicago Scaumberg show. I seldom see this figure offered for sale. Kolobob had a couple but the paint scheme was a bit outlandish. I love the face on this fig! Hope you enjoy, JW

Workmanship like this just makes me realise what an amateur I am! Sigh.

Nicholas,
I understand exactly how you feel! I have resigned myself to painting 54mm glossy toy soldiers. I can do pretty well when the eyes are a dot and the cheeks are a splash of pink.

I would be so grateful if some of our master painters here would give some tips on detailing techniques and the specific products they use. I have tried so many products by trial and error (emphasis on the latter) often with minimal results.

Even all my "painting military miniatures" books never discuss specific paints, brushes, paint pens..when to use ink, etc. Just vague allusions to how they completed their painting without any way of emulating it. It's very frustrating; I don't want to compete with anyone; I just want to paint competently!! Is it so bad to just say, "I use this brand and this item, and I love it because..."?

You should try the Planet Figure forum or Timelines as there are many how to threads from many excellent figure painters.

Thanks for sharing , although not one of my areas of interest that does stop me from appreciating this Fantastic piece :) Thanks again all the best gebhard

Hi "theweinz"

We haven't had a chance to talk yet. Welcome to the forum. I haven't been that active in this thread recently or connoisseur figures for that matter but I absolutely love the figures I have in my collection.

Thanks for sharing one of yours. :)

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Frank, you should post some photos of your collection.

Here is another one from my collection. We were talking painting yesterday, this piece is not so intimidating, although I think it is a classic piece. It is a Labayen casting painted by the Spanish master Arturo back in the late 1970s perhaps early 1980s. Note the disproportion between the head and body! I love the pose. It depicts one of Napoleon's Genadiers a Cheval.

Ok...so he has a slightly massive head. I'd be more concerned with those spindley legs; he's got to grip a horse with those?! Still a great piece and masterfully painted!

Just a small point but you don't really grip a horse with your legs; you balance over one. Long legs are actually much more of a help than thick ones.;) The pose and painting are quite nice. It is a pity the head is so large.

A new Hindenburg figure from Aeroart. They did a few WWI figures a few years ago including another Hindenburg. Maybe this means more are on the way:

Yo Trooper, sorry mate have to knock this somewhat on the painting. Think the shading in the creases is well over exaggerated for a Connoisseur figure. Thought they were painted by Master painters, if so the standard is slipping somewhat. Put a Chas Stadden model up to show you what I mean, the shading should not catch the eye as your model does. Only my honest opinion.
Bernard.

I'm glad that someone using Mark Churm's picture of The Life Guards at Waterloo knows what he's talking about.:)

To each his own. For example, the CS models give me the impression more of chess pieces with those bases.
