Hi all,

Time to add a little color to my collection!!!! Being that there are plenty Crusaders still available at decent prices I'm thinking of purchasing a few here and there, love my WWII but time to look at other areas where I can still get some good deals on some quality sets, any thoughts or suggestions on the Crusaders would be appreciated.

Hi Sammy,

I really enjoy FL's Crusaders. Two of my favorites are CRU93 & 96. I also love CRU87 & 91, but they will be a little harder to find, but both are worth the search. I think the Crusades crossbowmen FL did are fantastic...CRU58, 59, 60 and 61. If you start collecting Crusaders you'll want to get CRU063. It's not the type of figure for adding color to your collection, but it's Peter the Hermit and is a great, versatile figure. I've been looking for CRU048, a beautiful mounted piece.

I have CRU064,CRU087, CRU091, CRU093, and CRU094, and count them amongst some of the best Medieval figures I have seen.
The poses and painting for these figures is excellent.

Well, I have almost all of them, and they are one my favorite lines. My favorites are the Crusaders, especially the Military Orders, but the Outremers and Saracens are amazing too.

Sammy, if you’re not wed to the idea of Crusaders, take a look at the Ancient Greeks, the ones that are on sale. You can’t beat the price for a First Legion figure.

Will do Brad, being that new WWII prices have reached past my buying point overall, might as well take a look at other ranges that I have admired for sometime and take advantage of some quality sets at a smaller budget that I can swing.

Thanks to all for your imput.

I don't know Sammy - Why not use the budget you have and cherry pick new FL WWII releases. While those early releases of other series might seem reasonable, they're not free. You are still spending the money and probably satisfying that urge to purchase something - But is it what you really want to collect ?

If I'm lucky I'll try and pick up a few new WWII soldiers here and there, but at the 80.00 a pop it won't be many, I'd rather look at other ranges be it Civil War, Crusaders or Greeks as Brad suggested, 36, 59 or even 64 dollars isn't free as you stated but at some point the cost of a single soldier has to have a limit for me at least, and no the old line of "well it's only a few more dollars from 69.00 to 79.00" is in my past, so I'll be just as content buying a few Crusaders, Civil War at the lower prices.

Also, people who do not have CRU049, CRU051, CRU052 and CRU053 are really missing out. I was not that interested in these either, but they are really beautiful in the hand.

They are still available for list price.

For foot soldiers:
CRU093 is very nice and one of my favorite pieces.

CRU092 is also nice and would look good with 93

CRU097 is pretty cool with his falchion. Not sure about his helm, though.

CRU068 is the Lusignan / King of Jerusalem and Cyprus standard bearer. These people do not get the credit they deserve for holding the tide of Islam back for centuries. I really recommend reading Helena Schraders books on the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Lastly, I would second the other poster's recommendation on the crossbowmen. They are excellent. I love my firing line of them.

FYI, CRU063 is not Peter the Hermit (who most legitimate Crusades historians think his influence is way over blown.) FL's crusaders are 200 years too late for him at least.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/First-Legi...516692?hash=item3b0080e114:g:lI8AAOSwYxBaLDzN is a good buy, and since it is HR you know it was well taken care of

You are correct, the figure was not marketed as Peter the Hermit; thank you for the correction. However, the noted versatility of the figure allows one to use him as such. The figure is reminiscent of Aeraort's Peter the Hermit, from which my thought originated from. There's nothing in his attire that would limit his use to the intended period only. As far as his depth of influence in the 1st Crusade, I think most would not consider him a key figure, but he was there and was part of many dramatic events like the pre-Crusades atrocities in Germany, being a prominent figure in the People's Crusade and the consequent massacre at Civetot, albeit in his absence but due to him in part nonetheless. It's such a fascinating period of study.

Joe

Yes, it is a fascinating period, as well as the politics behind recording its history.

I agree, there is no reason you could not use it as Peter the Hermit. That would fit better with K&Cs Crusaders who are closer to that time period.

Rather than engaging in a debate about what is accurate or not, perhaps we could help Sammy by finding out whether he would like to concentrate on one area or dabble in many. I know that he has ancestors who have Civil War connections so that might be a possible area of strong interest for him. On the other hand, he may want to dabble and pick up a few figures from different historical periods. I would describe myself more as a dabbler. I find doing so stimulates interest in reading about that period (although I know for many it is quite the reverse).

You hit it on the head Brad, WWII will always be my true love but at this point in my collecting habits I'd like to venture more in the other ranges that are more affordable to me at this moment, certainly have always enjoyed looking at other ranges but I was building large dioramas that kept my coins tied up in WWII, so I'm excited to see what will end up on some of my shelves in the near future!!!.

:tongue::smile2: Why so serious Brad!

Not serious but let’s try to help Sammy.

Jazz, did you see my two posts?

One gives him a link to probably one of the finest pieces in the Crusades line at an incredible price. Seems helpful since this thread is about the Crusades.

Second, I went through all the available pieces on eBay and listed the ones I thought were the best and add that color that Sammy requested.

Third, I pointed out some that do not seem to move just because people do not know enough about them. Once you learn the history behind some of these releases they become much more interesting and then when they show up the detail is amazing. My Lusignan mounted knight was such a delight, just like the French knight and the fantastic Outremer knight. All of them were low on my list and then end up being some of my favorite releases.

Fourth, I really encourage him not to overlook the Saracens, because if you want color they are fantastic with very intricate detailing and color combinations.

Lastly, Joe and I de-escalated ourselves. Joe had a point and I admitted it. Then he was gracious enough to like my post.

Seems like things are working fine without your involvement.

In another effort to de-escalate, I agree the Greeks are a great deal with a ton of color. I would still pick the Outremer Knight which is running about $35 right now, and is an even better deal for a retired and unavailable piece.

Respectfully yours,

Larry

I don’t need a point by point clarification Larry. If I thought the conversation hadn’t gotten sidetracked I wouldn’t have bothered to post.

Me thinks you doth protest too much :wink2:

Shall we move on?

Again I thank everyone for thier input, lots of great ideas and suggestions to look in to, I really look forward to seeing where my new road of collecting turns.

Ok fellas, made a decision...I picked Crusaders 093, and 068!!! A little more pricier then I wanted but I love the flags that both Crusaders hold, and the colors on both are outstanding, I think on my next order I'm going for some Civil War Mass Battle soldiers.

Once my Crusaders arrive I'll post a quick review.
