Dinner tonite (3 Viewers)

When Fall comes around and the temperatures are getting lower, it's time for the "crock pot" or "slow cooker" to come out.
Today I had a first try at preparing a deer roast in the crock pot.

To take away the often strong "game taste" I had the roast soaked and covered in buttermilk over night.
This morning I took it out and gave it a rub of a mix of Worcestershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, Cracked Pepper Rub and a Garlic Salt.
Then it went in the Crock Pot on the low setting for 6 hours. A few slices of onions were put on the roast.
As a liquid I added a can of Campbells Onion Soup to the pot for providing the necessary moisture.

Came out really nice, no strong game taste, just a great roast.

In the picture you see the cut up roast, covered with some onion gravy and German potatoes dumplings around.

Dessert was "warm homemade apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream".

wow Konrad that looks deeeeelish!!!! I tell you what, we maybe a bunch of guys that collect toy soldiers and what nots but I believe we could give any women's cooking forum a run for the money!! :) lots if great ideas and receipts shared by all in this thread...Sammy

That's the secret to venison, Konrad, slow cooking. It takes a marinade well, too. I like to use a Sauerbraten marinade of red wine and cider vinegar, onion, carrot and spices, marinate for a week, and then roast slowly at a moderate temperature. Goes well with red cabbage and Spaetzle, and of course, a good beer.

Goes well with red cabbage and Spaetzle, and of course, a good beer.

I could simply go for some Spaetzle, and a good beer, although the venison looks tasty.
 
Spaetzle is so easy to tasty to make at home! One of my favorites!

I cheat and use a press ;) I never mastered the technique of putting the dough on a board and scraping it into the boiling water with the back edge of a kitchen knife. Sometimes I cheat even more and buy them ready-made, in a pinch. Wegman's carries German specialties and I can get them there. But it is more fun to make them from scratch, and homemade is always better.

I tried it without a press once. If Spaetzle is crows' feet, these were crow "droppings".^&grin

My grandmother used to make it using the back edge of a kitchen knife. I was a little kid then, but I can still remember how great it was compared to the store bought versions I have today.

How about a nice tasty Diorama tonight ! Hand painted pewter figures covered in flat paint. Topped off with 1/30 scale combat vehicles with added ground work and back drop. Sounds tasty doesn't it {sm3}

I had this last night and today I have an upset stomach. The diorama must have been the wrong scale or not historically accurate. I was going to try again tonight with plastic figures, but it will depend on the cost before I try them.

Another treat tonight, guys ^&grin

My wife, who is from Thailand, cooked today.
Served was a deep fried Tilapia (very crisp), garnished with a commercially available sweet and hot sauce, which was enhanced with some additional heat (dried red hot peppers), garlic and a few drops of oyster sauce. Some Jasmine Rice came on the side.
A rather hot (spicy) dish, but very, very good.
Tilapia is a great fish for this kind of dish. Comes very easily off the bones.

Dessert was plantains, cubed and cooked in coconut milk.
Plantains are some kind of bananas, but much firmer.
Feel a bit closer to firm potatoes than bananas.

Good stuff.
I got off the table a happy man ^&grin
