Hi Jeff,
as with the RHA set you painted, this is again a very exciting thread to follow and I will do it with great pleasure.
The set looks great already only primed. When the colors start next week the look will grow exponential.
Do you have a customer for this set yet?

Did a few hours painting today starting with the elephant. The yoke harness and padding was painted first and as I paint from the middle outwards the wooden yoke was painted first then the padding etc. I find it easier to paint up to a raised area than away from it…….also leaving the main colour to last on a large item such as the elephant enables me to hold an unpainted part so I don’t get oily fingers on previously painted areas………. just the way I do it.

Next to get a covering was the chains and quilted jacket. The pattern and edging will be painted next once this has dried thoroughly.

Great start Jeff. Did you give the yoke harness another colour undercoat before painting? Just curious, as I'm messing around with a few bits re red tunics at the mo.

I just wasn't happy with the colour I painted it at first, came out a bit green, so I did a bit of re-painting.

Painted the pattern and edging on the quilted jacket by using the base colour of tan mixed with a bit of red, just enough to give a contrast.

The next step will be to paint the elephant itself.

Grey……I chose to go the Grey route in the end, but thanks for the advice of colours chaps

Here we have the finished elephant, the darker highlights are a lot subtler than they look in these photos

The Indian Mahout will be next for the paintbrush. I mixed the khaki colour from tan, green and buff. There have been many different shades of khaki since it’s inception so I hope mine is somewhere in the middle.

This may sound like a dumb question, Jeff, but when you were painting the elephant's body, how do you make sure that grey paint didn't go on the parts you'd previously painted, i.e. saddle (if that's the correct term)?

Like the look of the elephant Jeff, never really thought of mixing shading / highlighting in with glossies.

Brad,

Carefully, a good brush and a steady hand. I use a small paintbrush to cut in up to the previously painted colour and then use a larger brush to paint the remaining area grey. It also helps to paint up to a raised detail, acts like a guide so to speak.

I have been taking advantage of the long weekend and the crap weather, we’ve had sun, rain, sleet and snow today and more rain and sun, so got round to a bit more painting.

I don’t normally shade/highlight when painting gloss figures but there is so much grey on the elephant it was looking rather bland so I thought I’d give it a go……it looks a lot better than the photo’s show.
