General-in-Chief Winfield Scott -- Old Fuss and Feathers -- and his second command General George McClellan conclude another conference, settling nothing. The old General, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the war with Mexico, by 1861 was subject to many infirmities and could only spend a few hours each day discharging his duties. The haughty McClellan put in 18 hour days and often bypassed his superior by going directly to President Lincoln, who tried to mediate between the two, unsucessfully.
When Scott resigned and Lincoln told him that the position of General-in-Chief and head of the Army of the Potomac would entail a "vast labor on you," McClellan replied "I can do it all."
