If I could list my next top 5, they would include

To the Forum Membership,
I’m not an accountant or computer programmer so I can’t guarantee 100% accuracy. However rest assured that the count was conducted by a retired weapons engineer who has designed nuclear depth charge fuzes. That having been said, I have compiled a tally of the Forum membership’s vote to date on the five best war movies of all time. The ranking was as follows:
Saving Private Ryan 27
A Bridge Too Far 20
Zulu 15
The Longest Day 13
Black Hawk Down 10
Gettysburg 8 (listed only to show next ranked movie)

I then went to the main internet sites giving top ranked war movies of all time as a point of comparison. Because the list is a composite of several lists it may not be in exact ranked order, but is very close to that. One also has to consider artistry versus accurate portrayal of military history in this listing. Many of you will notice that your choices are included in the following list, but did not garner that many votes in those cast in the forum.
Lawrence of Arabia
Battleship Potemkin
Apocalypse Now
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Casablanca
Paths of Glory
Dances with Wolves
Platoon
Patton
The Deer Hunter
The Hurt Locker
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Gone with the Wind
All Quiet on the Western Front
Gladiator
Forrest Gump
From Here to Eternity
Wings
Braveheart

Jim

Jim,
You saved me the trouble ! Your top 5 below saves me thinking about it as they represent my top 5 with We Were Soldiers coming close behind.

Now for the Westerns list.
Regards
Brett

I would agree with most but include 12 Oclock high and the tv series of Here to Eternity,,far beyond the chopped, censored version of my Favorite authors story.

I would add "The Devil's Brigade " , grest opening scene with the Americans brawling and the Canadians marching in with the Pipes and Drums playing .

Also the Canadian commander had a great name, Major Crown .

What did folks think of "Inglorious Basterds " ? I thought it was a great flick and Christof Waltz well deserving of his Oscar , one of the BEST performances ever

Kirk

Interesting topic and tough choices.

Major Dundee
Kingdom of Heaven
Revolution
Last of the Mohicans
Master and Commander

Saving Private Ryan, Zulu, The Vikings, Charge of the Light Brigade, and Kelly's Heros.:)

1)Downfall 2) Saving Private Ryan 3)Battle of the Bulge 4)A Bridge Too Far
5) Alamo w/Billy Bob version

Some movies here I haven't seen but from those I have seen, I would choose (oh boy, here comes the hard part):

-Apocalypse Now (more about art than realism, but extraordinary at that);
-The Deer Hunter (storyline, music, imagery, you name it);
-Lawrence of Arabia (monumental classic but much much more than the academic classic);
-A Bridge Too Far (stiff upper lip becomes extreme valour under extreme fire);
-Saving Private Ryan (that opening scene is possibly the best combat scene ever, and the rest of the movie is so poignant and a real homage to those who fell).

Of course I have to mention others:
-Sands of Iwo Jima
-The Last of the Mohicans
-Schindler's List
-The Downfall (tremendous performance by Bruno Ganz as Hitler and you can feel the last days/siege/bunker atmosphere suffocating you...)
-Gallipoli (poignant, excellent)
-The Thin Red Line
-Gladiator to me is not exactly a war movie, but the opening battle scene is outstanding, would love to see a Roman Empire war movie made to that standard.
-Excalibur by John Boorman
-Dr. Jivago, not exactly a war movie, but certainly an extraordinary, memorable depiction of people swept away by the Russian Civil War, would be in my top 2 if it was a war movie.

Saw Glory many years ago, but can't remember it that well now. I still have to see All's Quiet on the Western Front, both versions.
I also have to mention Band of Brothers surely the best war TV series ever (and one of the best TV series, war theme or not).
This is what I remember right now and I already have had to change my list twice:rolleyes2:.

Revolution

The recent re-release, available on DVD, is better than the theatrical release. It has a more UP ending. The Brits trying to fire in 3 ranks on Long Island was shaky as were the "Fjords" of Yorktown. Still a good gritty movie.

How about the most realistic RVN War movie "Hamburger Hill"(nothing comes close!!!),Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan-remainder of film ***-over?-Full Metal Jacket -boot camp -right on(except everything dealing with "Pyle"[utter BS Hollywood crap])and Hue City/Da Nang -gimmee a break-What BS!!-Black Hawk Down-A-OK-I liked Last Of The Mohicans and ZULU w/ M.Caine!!undefined

Wayne.

Too many choices, but this is my list,
-Gettysburg
-saving private Ryan
-platoon
-black hawk down
-cross of iron

Lawrence of Arabia
Das Boot
Patton
Tora Tora Tora
We Were Soldiers

First four are certain, five might be switched for a few others I could think of like Zulu, Run Silent Run Deep for examples.

1. All Quiet On The Western Front (original, of course) 2. Thin Red Line (1998) 3. Pork Chop Hill 4. The Train 5. Blackhawk Down Has anyone an opinion of 1988 film "The Beast", starring Jason Patric and Steven Bauer? I found this to be a really good film with unusual subject matter.
Interestingly, upon reviewing this thread, and after 5 years, I wouldn't change my list at all. ^&grin -- Al
