It takes one to know one.

Don't eat yellow snow. (although not sure about this one)

A penny saved is a penny earned.

It's better to have love and lost than never to have loved at all.

Where theres smoke theres fire.

I've got more but I'm sure no one has even read this far.......

Scott,
Your General Smedley D. Butler USMC quote made me Google him.

Very interesting career : 2 Medal of Honours, 16 medals, very active in combat overseas, Banana Wars, first general officer to be placed under arrest since the Civil War (for insulting Mussolini !!!), plot to march on Washington, most decorated Marine when he died etc.

Would make a good movie.

Regards
Brett

The Mountains are calling and I must GO!!!

John Muir

Not sure about your neck of the woods but things were hot and sunny here in Central Pa all Memorial Day weekend. Time to brush off the ruck, clean out the canteens and spend the weekends up a mountain or by a river. Life's too short to spend in front of some plastic box.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car. {eek3}{eek3}{eek3}

"Take me to the brig, I want to see real marines."

Chesty Puller.

Yep, not a vet but I am a fan of their work. My father-in-law might disagree about the brig part. He was in Korea and became an upstanding family man and Major in the NJ State police.

"Heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well".

A tribute to those ANZACs who died in Gallipoli (1934). Inscribed on the Atatürk Memorial in Turakena Bay, Gallipoli and at the Kemal Atatürk Memorial, Canberra which right outside The Australian War Memorial (actually a great museum).

He also had another Gallipoli one to his men which was :
"I am not ordering you to fight. I am ordering you to die"

When Winston Churchill was asked what he thought about the Italy joining Germany in WW2, he replied, " I think it is only fair since they were on our side during the last war."

W C Fields said, " She offered her honor, so I honored her offer. Then all night long, it was offer and honor and offer and honor."

“Before we're done with them, the Japanese language will be spoken only in Hell!”

Admiral William "Bull" Halsey ~ Dec 8 1941 as he sailed into Pearl Harbor aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise

I don't take it as "tough talk" really, more of a acceptance of the total commitment to war that was going to be needed to defeat the Japanese.
