This means the manufacturers choose an average that appeals to them and stick with it.

And Frank has hit the nail on the head as he so often does. Our vehicles have the coloring, weathering, and overall style that they do because that is the way we like them. One of the benefits of having our own company I guess! As we are not a company that is "cost" driven, but rather "quality" driven, if there was anything different we wanted to do with our vehicles, we'd do it. So our vehicles are pretty much exactly what we want them to be. Hence why I'll seldom agree with critiques of subjective things such as painting or weathering of the vehicles because obviously if I agreed, I'd have done it that way to begin with! Even if the majority of you thought the color was wrong, if I like it or prefer it differently, then I get final vote.

Now, about that beer...

I don't think anyone will claim there is one definitive correct grey that can be applied to 1/30 scale models in order to maintain historical accuracy.

Quite true. Even if one had paint samples from every factory for every batch of Panzers ever painted, and knew the precise color data on all of them, it would be an exercise in futility to predict exactly what would be the correct shade on small scale models. Some variables simply aren't scalable, such as particle size. That's where science ends & artistry begins.

As a footnote, the US Army did visual identification experiments on painted 1/76 models back in the early 1970s. They were comparing the camo patterns & single block colors on model tanks & APCs for the US, UK, Germany, & Sweden. Did they use the actual paints in their inventory? Nope. They used model railroad colors, Floquil again (& Pactra iirc). And did they bring in Nobel Prize winning physicists to mix the paint colors to adjust for scale? Nope. Whatever looked right.
