football season is here!!!!!!!!!! (1 Viewer)

"Defense wins superbowls, George, and the Giants defense held your offense to two scores. That's how Eli and the Giants offense, who could only put 17 points on the board, beat your team."

True, defense wins Super Bowls, but the Patriots hung 35 points on the Giants in the last game of the year.

Granted, the Giants defense (namely the front four) played out of their minds, the Patriots ran way too many home run type plays that took too long to develop. When they came out in the second half, I thought for sure they'd go with screens, wide reciever screens, draw plays, etc to take advantage of the over aggressive front four, but nope, they stuck with the original game plan and it cost them.

Also, all the Patriots defense had to do was come up with ONE big play on the last drive and game over.

Thaks for your thoughts Louis; you too Brad, brilliant anaylsis on your part.

George, you're my friend, but you have to face it, they lost and that's that.

In 1988, the Mets were the best team but they lost in the NLCS to the Dodgers, whom the Mets had beaten 11 out of 12 times that year. I didn't like it (I couldn't sleep the night Mike Bleepin' Scoscia hit the home run that cost the Mets a 3-1 lead in the NLCS) and still don't but that doesn't change it unfortunately. They still lost and I guess they weren't the best team. Same with the Patriots and Giants. I'm sure it bugs you and maybe will for a very long time but that they lost is the reality.

"George, you're my friend, but you have to face it, they lost and that's that."

True, can't change the outcome, but it has ruined my enjoyment of the NFL; I can't watch any show, program, game for fear of seeing highlights, ANY highlights of "the catch", Eli holding up the trophy, Gap tooth screaming his lungs out or Coughlin with that @#$% eating grin on his face.

"I'm sure it bugs you and maybe will for a very long time but that they lost is the reality."

It will bug me until the day they drop me in the ground; 19-0, football immortality and Poof!!, all gone in the blink of an eye.

I disagree with you. Your 2008 is like my 1988 NLCS. It was a bitter pill to swallow but I still enjoy them, even after that fiasco last year with the Phillies. Put last season away and look forward to this one :)

QUOTE]

As I recall, the Patriots scored 38 points, and the Giants scored 35 in that first meeting. Both defenses made adjustments, and both limited the opposing opposition to less than half as many points in their second meeting. Games always come down to who makes the big plays, and who doesn't. In the Super Bowl, the Giants defense made a couple of more big plays than the Patriots defense.

This year, the Patriots have reloaded on defense, and may be able to make a couple of more big plays and win the big one again. Or it could be the Chargers, or the Colts or the Cowboys or even, dare I hope, an unlikely repeat by the Giants. Don't let losing the Championship get you down, its not like you are a Jets fan, and haven't been in a superbowl in forty years. Look at it this way, George, your Patriots have won 3 and lost 3 Superbowls . . . that's a .500 record, not terrible in the big game. The Giants have played in 18 Championship games (14 NFL Championship and 4 Superbowls), more than any other NFL franchise, but have only won 6 (3 NFL Championships and 3 Superbowls).

Oh, and your Pats are not the first undefeated team to lose a championship game. The 12-0 Chicago Bears came into Yankee Stadium to play the Giants for the Championship in 1934 on the coldest day in NFL history up to that time, and still one of the coldest games in NFL history. The field was frozen solid, the players' cleats couldn't get any traction and it was a 0-0 tie at halftime. The Giants' trainer, who was also worked for the Fordham University Basketball team, called Fordham during the first half, and had them run basketball sneakers with rubber soles to Yankee Stadium by halftime. The Giants went on to win the "Sneaker Game" 33-0. How do you think the Chicago fans felt (especially as the Cubs were swept by the Yankees in the World Series that year as well)? At least the Patriots lost to a team that played on a level playing field, not a team with equipment the bears just didn't have.

I knew a Federal Judge, Judge Cannela, who had played for the Giants as an Offensive liveman in that game, which is how I know the story.

Around Chicago, Cubs stands for completely useless by September and guess how many games they have won this Septemeber? Can you say zero? I'm not sure what would happen here if the Cubs actually won a worldseries, probably dead silence from the shock.

"Around Chicago, Cubs stands for completely useless by September"

Never heard that one before, pretty comical, have to run that one by my buddy Mike from Chicago, the diehard Cubs fan that he is.........

The Patriots lost their best cover corner Samuel to the Eagles and they brought in several free agent CB's to try to take his place; the guy who everyone around here thought had the job locked up was the same nitwit who got pushed into the end zone by the Giants running back on a long TD run. He got cut the next day, now we're throwing a rookie out there on an island.

I hear some experts saying we could go 16-0 again; I'd take 9-7 if they win the game that matters most, the last one in February.

"Don't let losing the Championship get you down, its not like you are a Jets fan, and haven't been in a superbowl in forty years."

I feel better already, thanks for pointing that out.

....Don't let losing the Championship get you down, its not like you are a Jets fan, and haven't been in a superbowl in forty years....
Ah, you had to bring that bloody game up; it may have been 40 years but they sure did spoil a great year for the "real" Colts:mad:. Besides, you now have one of the all time magic makers behind the center, slightly deranged perhaps but still [maybe] magical.;):D

I think it was made up by a White Sox fan, I don't think any true die hard Cub fan will admit to it, although they should after 100 years of frustration.

I know developing a QB takes time, but the Redskins quarterback doesn't have a clue.

As far as the Ravens go, aren't they picked to be near the bottom?

Yes jazzeum the ravens are getting on the old side, and still do not have a decent quarterback, but if I recollect we were 13-3 year before last, we lost our quarterback and a half a dozen or so starters the first game last year and we collaped after that, but if the ravens can stay away from the multitude of injuries and keep the defense intact I think there is enough quality starters on offense to get us back in the playoffs ....Sammy

How bout them Gators!!!!!! sorry Hurricanes maybe next year:D:D:D sammy

Sammy

I wouldn't thump my chest too loud - the Hurricanes held the Gators to 3 - 9 game for three quarters  Let's see what happens when you play someone in the top 20 !

Not sure I would call Hawaii (this year), the Citadel, Vanderbilt - major powerful forces to dealt with in College Football

You do have Georgia and LSU - which can mess things up and sometimes Tenn. when they get their act together - but, as for a MAJOR TOUGH SCHEDULE - PLEASSSSEEEE ! ;)

I think you should enjoy the top five spot - you won't be there long ! :D :p :)

Sammy

You just started playing Miami again this year - after years of ducking them - poor old Steve "the visor thrower" didn't like losing to them. After last night - you guys will probally duck them again ;)

We shall see how the might Gators do this year - I will give you that TEBOW is a great quarterback. But, I think LSU and Georgia might have some plans for him

Great having fun with you on this - my best friend from High School went to UF - when I went to FSU - :D

oh no, I hope u of f schedules miami every season, nothing like a 26-3 win to get things rolling, I do have a ton of relatives who live in or near gainesville and even though i'm from va. i have to pull for the gators or be the scurge of the family ha!!!!

with that being said how about my boy flacco in baltimore today?? he's no joe montana but he played better then carson palmer that's for sure, nothing like a good ol ... whipping to start the season that score should have been like 31-10 if we hadn't dropped a touchdown and had one called back on a penalty, oh yea and we gave cincinnati 7 on a fumble, that's ok a win is a win 1-0 hhhuurraayyy!!!!!!!!!....sammy

Just saw that Tom Brady is done for the year in New England. That is a tough break for the Pats fans. Anyone have George on suicide watch? The only good news is that Matt Cassel may be the most deserving QB in history to finally get his shot. He played (or at least watched) behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart during his career at USC - both Heisman winners. Then Brady in the NFL. Hopefully he does well.
