Does anyone know whether Ted Turner will finally complete the trilogy with the last installment of this great Civil War film series? I heard a couple of years ago that the last film in this series was to end with the surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse. It was an admirable undertaking and I hope we get the final installment. It would be nice if they also, follow through with more often than not, the same cast portraying the main characters. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

That movie would be based on the book The last full measure; seeing how Gods and Generals tanked at the box office, I'd say the answer is no.

Even though the movie was a little wordy, I enjoyed most of it, especially the Fredericksburg battle........Michael

Yeah, it would be great if the trilogy were to be completed. I thought Gettysburg / Gods and Generals were excellent.

Gods & Generals had a few highlights. I don't really think it makes a difference weather it made any money or not. Turner is a civil war nut, and I think it may eventually get made. I think he would spend the money to make it just so he can see himself on the screen for 15 seconds.

You know the big problem I had with Gods & Generals was the fact that they skipped the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg for us Southern Boys)

This was a glaring mistake - that battle was probally the most important battle for the first two years of the Civil War. Not only did it prove that Napoleon tactics were wrong with the new weapons of the day - it also had huge historical factors for the Union Army.

I didnt understand why they used so much footage on that sick little girl and try the typical Hollywood attempt to humanize Jackson - pruely stupid.

Make a historical film and do it right in my opinion.

Ron

Hi Ron,

I would be the first to agree with you on your Antietam point. That should have been included in the film.
Yes, I felt the movie spent way too much time focusing on Jackson which contributed to it's slow pace. Gettysburg was a far superior film mainly because, in that film, more personalities were introduced and studied. Gods and Generals would have been much better, if they had followed the same style as the first film.
Anyway, I watched the DVD again yesterday, and it was enjoyable. It's so much better than a lot of the historical films coming out of hollywood in the last 10 years, in my opinion. In the ending credits, there was mention that "Last Full Measure" would complete the trilogy and I was wondering if indeed, it would get completed. I hope it does...

The original cut of Gods and Generals ran for almost 6 hours which featured a number of sub-plots that were intended to run into the third film. All of this including the battle of Antietam which was filmed was cut from the final release.
Fans have repeatedly ask that Turner/WB release this marathon 6hour film on DVD, it came close in 2005 but litigation between the studio/Turner and Maxwell really muddied the water and it got shelved indefinitely along with any plans to make the third instalment.

G&G is the closest us civil war movie-fans have gotten to that enigmatic character Jackson and it's ironic because of it's heavy inclusion of his story and the depiction of a string of Southern victories it has been pillorised as too pro-Confederate. Yet if they had/did make The Last Full Measure it would concentrate on Grant and the Union making the trilogy better balanced.
Alas guys I dont think that will happen Hollywood is all about the $.

Hmmm....The DVD of G&G's I have runs for about 5-1/2 hours UKReb. Guess its cos its one I picked up here in China - which suggests its a pirate (shock, horror). I really enjoyed it although I think Gettysburg was a bit more even-handed.
Just my 2RMB's worth like.
:)

Harry now that piece of info would make a thousand fans as happy as munchkins because as far as my knowledge of this cut goes it was only shown once in the States and received a standing ovation when it ended after that it disappeared into some dusty vault never to be seen again. Those crafty Chinese obviously knew the combination.

Does your version include Antietam with McClellan?
Does AP Hill division arrive at the eleventh hour to save Lee's army from a severe drubbing?
Does it include the character Wilkes Booth as an early pre-cursor to the third instalment?

"Pirate" of the "China" seas............Shame on you!

Sorry to be so non-specific. Its around 4 years since I last watched it. I'll try and find it, but I suspect its been loaned out to someone. A habit my nearest and dearest has that drives me mad.... I could trawl around the local shopping malls and try to get another copy, but I travel to Dubai on Thursday. So, I'll see what I can do.

"Pirate" of the "China" seas?? I know you're just kidding but to be perfectly honest mate, I couldn't care less if its pirated or not. If somethings for sale and I want it then I'll buy it. Most DVD's I buy in China are good quality, but sometimes they are a bit shakey and I have on occasion seen a cockroach or something equally disgusting crawling across the film screen, or the pirates video camera lens.....:D:eek:

Gettyburg was EXCELLENT......They went all out....Gods and Generals was cheaply made....too much talk and dramatics!!!!!!! I think his last movie may have bankrupt him!!!

Ummm, I enjoyed G&G's Wellington. IMO it was very well made and potrayed Jackson exactly as I had always imagined him. I sincerely hope the 3rd movie gets made and if so, then I hope that you enjoy it as much as I'm sure I will.

Best Regards

at the end of G&G it states that it is the first part of a trilogy. I do wonder if it will ever be made?? I hope so to H

No Question - Gettysburg was the best historically correct movie they did.

Gods and Generals - had great Jackson and Battle scenes - but it all falls apart without the Battle of Antietam.

IMO ;)

Ok.....WHICH DID YOU LIKE BETTER?

Wellington

Well, if I had to choose then I'd have to go for Gettysburg as the one that I liked (slightly) better. Pickets's charge does bring up a lump in the throat, even though I'm not as emotionally involved as I would imagine a lot of you guys might be.
Must have an intensive hunt for both of those DVD's again.
:)

No doubt Gettysburg gets my vote I never tire of watching it whilst Gods and Generals requires an acquired taste.
I agree with other posters well staged battle scenes and I thought Duvall's portrayal of Lee better by a head although we saw very little of him

Yet Lang's portrayal of Jackson IMO just missed the target, we got the religous half (maybe we got too much of that) but we hardly got any of his ruthless & cold blue eyed killer traits. The Jackson I have read extensively about sure as hell didn't care much for his own officer staff anymore than he did for his enemy; such as his classic line following Second Manassas when he asked Sandy Pendleton the whereabouts of one of his regimental commanders "I am sorry General Jackson he was killed during the action" Jackson retorted "Admirable, very admirable!".
What we got for the sake of our PC brigade was an inaccurate anti-slavery, Sunday school Uncle Jack.
