Gettysburg / Gods and Generals (1 Viewer)

You said it UKReb - Gods and Generals certainly had the PC scenes throughout and the BS on Jackson and that little girl was too much. I mean what should have taken 11 mins. to do - took them 45 mins. - UGH

I think the best parts of that film were left on the cutting room floor.

Duvall's LEE was fanatastic - Martin Sheen was the only thing that sunk in Getttysburg - IMO.

Maybe Duvall made a better Lee because his father was from Virginia and his mother was a distant relative of Bobby Lee.

I liked G&G a lot too but thought it could have been a much better movie if they had stuck closer to the "real" Jackson instead of the sanitised and over-sanctimonius character Maxwell presented us with.

Jackson was a religious zealot and not far off being certified as an insane bigot to boot but his military strategic execution and second thinking the enemy was simply outstanding- the Union had no one to match him. But his ruthlessness carried over to his own men and officers.
Take for example the poignant scene in Gettysburg when the injured Dick Garnett had to ride his horse in the final charge because he was unable to walk. Armistead pleaded with him not to ride knowing he would be a target for a hundred Union muskets, he continued that plea with Longstreet and Pickett asking them to let him fall out.
That was all down to Jackson!(not explained in the film)
At the Battle of Kernstown the year before Garnett's brigade had run out of ammo and were in danger of being flanked by a superior army, he ordered an orderly retreat supported by his subordinates. Jackson immediately had him arrested charging him with cowardice and went so far as to try and keep him from being reassigned anywhere in the Confederate army. Jackson was killed before a court-martial could be convened and Garnett was unable to remove that stigma until he deliberately rode to his death on that third day. As any student of the great Stonewall knows this was not an isolated case Jackson had practically every one of his Second Corps officers from AP Hill to Robert Rodes arrested and stripped of command sometime or other. He was a complete fighting nutter and that's what we should have seen on screen instead of a dear old cuddly religous uncle!

I completely agree that Jackson was (1) a religious fanatic zealot, (2) an unbelievable nearly certifiably insane SOB, but (3) the best infantry commander this country (and maybe any country) ever produced. When he got shot by Confederate Troops, any chance the South had to win the war died with him.

Can't speak on G&G, since I haven't seen it yet, but Gettysburg is a favorite of mine & have watched it many (many) times.

I thought one of the main reasons Gettysburg was great, was because the book it was based on 'The Killer Angels' was so well done. I remember the author was Michael Shaara & thought he died fairly young.

I had to do a search to find out that G&G and 'The Last Full Measure' was written by his son Jeffrey. Not having read them, I wondered if the different tone of the movie was due to the Director or the Author ?

I loved Duvall's performance but I thought he was way to old to play the part.(Lee was 54 at the wars start and duvall was in his seventies)

UK REB,

I would never consider Jackson a bigot. He broke Virginia law to educate black children on Sundays.

Louis,

Why did you call Jackson a SOB!?

Jackson was prickly to his subordinates, even , as others have noted, to the point of bringing any number of them, up on bogus charges...He also was a moody individual , who at times, as he did during the Seven Days Battles, would brood to the point of parylsis in his decisions and in following specific orders. At least in 2 of those battles, he brought his forces up too slowly, resulting in Confederate reverses, though Mc Clellan never could see a victory , even when it bit him in his butt......Michael

True but his actual attitude to slavery was because God had sanctioned it man had no right to challenge it's existence????????

Whichever way you cut this cake when Jackson, Lee etc signed up with the Confederacy and for whatever their personal reasons they accepted slavery and the economic system that it sustained.
Now as I have mentioned before I am and always will be a great admirer of the South and it's brave fighting men but don't you think it a little odd that your namesake and Jackson have been deified into God Generals whereas not a single Union officer has ever been blessed with that same saint-hood deification.
As good and as fearless as the Southern soldier and his officer corps were, their leaders marblelisation owes a helluva lot to those romantic and selective "Lost Cause" Southern historians that is now being perpetuated by Hollywood!

For the most part yes, but late in the war they found a competent drunk (Grant) out West who along with his competent and ruthless buddy (Sherman) whipped the confederacy pretty good.

I enjoyed both of the movies, thought that Gods and Generals delved too much into character of Jackson. Perhaps going off on too many different themes or aspects. I also wondered about what happened to "Antietam". Did you know that the depiction of Fredericksburg being shelled was actually filmed at Harpers Ferry? I realized that as soon as I saw the movie. It is hard to believe that this movie was being filmed on the day of 9-11. Where has the time gone?
