Heroes of the Home Front (1 Viewer)

Rob,

Thanks for the "how to" info on your dio. It's always fun to find out how other collectors go about putting together a scene. Sounds like you have been wanting to do this type of dio for some time, with the research from the DVD's and talk with Andy and all. It sure did turn out great. Nice touch having your wife contribute with the road block and also saving some of your own "personal" rubble to use.^&grin It's nice to have the better half be supportive of your hobby!:smile2: Mine is for the most part, although she has not helped me with any dio type work just yet. Maybe one day.{sm3} Those are some great figures and Tilly's from K&C and your arrangement of the whole set up is superb. BTW - your broken windows look great too. Thanks again for posting.

Duke, my pleasure my friend, happy to share how I go about stuff, the sharing of the hobby is what this forum is so good for. Yes I'm very lucky in that my good lady is very supportive.......especially today,as that brick dust went EVERYWHERE!{eek3}:redface2:

Rob,
Outstanding mate, you've out done yourself......{bravo}}:salute::
Wayne.

Rob - a stunning diorama and well photographed. You should be very proud and, like Mitch, I too think it the best diorama you've shown on the forum.

Guys, you are too kind, its really appreciated.

Rob

Rob

Just superb!

The picture of St Pauls is one of the great photographs of the 20th Century. For me, it sums up the entire war against Nazism. It made it clear that it was a clash of world views, between civilisation and savagery, between darkness and light.

Excellent dio!

Jack, thats very kind of you mate. When I started this project I just had to have that pic however much it cost. Its truly an iconic pic and it lifted British spirits whilst no doubt really ******* off Goering, Hitler and co. St Pauls became such a defiant symbol amid the smoke and flame, it was also very lucky, one bomb hit it and bounced off I understand.....they built things to last in those days mate!

Thanks again

Rob

Hi Rob ,
Very well done {bravo}} it reminds me of that Great Episode of Foyle's War ... War of Nerves ....I think it was called the one that focused on the bomb disposal unit . Very cool dio and again well done . Thanks for sharing.. Regards Gebhard

Rob, I echo all the compliments of others. Absolutely stunning work, from the dio itself to the background info. Chris

Rob,

This is first class all the way. Until I saw your explanation I was going to ask you if you had made the buildings and everything yourself. You're an excellent dioramist, giving the pros on here a run for their money.

Congratulations!

Brad

That is one of the best Dios i have ever seen. Really tells a great story.

Great Dio! {sm4}

For the clobbled road and pavement you DIY too ? Or bought off the shelve - what brand ?

Brad, you're very kind my friend, I'm not in Bob or Rod's league but I'm getting happier with my work as I go forward. Thanks again.

The cobblestone mat is from a company called Kancali in the US . Its an excellent mat and not at all expensive. I gave it a grey undercoat, then three or four ' dirty' colour washes and finally when dry I picked out some of the stones with a dry brushing of an off white to highlight the wear and tear on them. Must say a BIG THANK YOU to my good friend Simon who gave me the heads up about Kancali, superb mat they make.

The pavement is from JG miniatures and is meant to go with their Arnhem buildings. Its an excellent path but for my purposes was the wrong shape and not quite the colour I wanted. So I cut it long ways, painted it with a woodland scenic pavement paint that gave it a look more akin to what you may find here in the UK and then as with the mat I gave it a few washes with a dark wash for realism as the pure grey was a bit too ' clean'. Hope this helps.

Hello Rob:

Well done indeed! Cheers!

"Iron Brigade"

Thank you Ludwig

A really great scene Rob. You put alot of work into it and it {sm3}has come up great. Simmo.

Hey Simmo, I appreciate that very much because it is a lot of work, painting the road, building, wall, path, digging the hole etc etc, but its very enjoyable and rewarding and to get so many nice comments....well I'm kind of lost for words :redface2: (no, doesn't sound like me does it!:wink2:)

Cheers guys

Rob

Rob,
Excellent work.

Now tell us all the most important part.

How did you get into that hole with the officer to take his photo {sm4} ?

My family home in Liverpool was pre WWII and had a great little air raid shelter in the garden which had a bunk bed. Was a mound in the middle of the garden and had an air vent at the top and floor level would have been about 4m below ground. You photo of the field behind the houses instantly reminded me of it.

Regards
Brett

Thanks Brett. I didn't get into the hole mate, I sent the wife into it whilst I strategically withdrew behind the sandbags so I could keep an eye out on the whole situation!^&grin:wink2:

Must thank my good lady actually, not only did she build the road block yesterday but she did a great ' camo ' job on the pc for me. What happened was that one piece of the wood I used to line the hole with did not have enough paint on it, as a result the bar code could be clearly seen in all the pics!{eek3}So there was my officer defusing the bomb with a big bar code above his head^&grin But being an ace on the pc my good lady was able to airbrush it out so all is well.

Glad it reminded you of home Brett, I was trying to capture a British feel about it. I was worried that the Houses in the background would look too modern, and my wife pointed out a new looking conservatory extension, but I think with a bit of jiggling about I was able to hide it.

Rob

Whow another great dio! Thanks for sharing the pictures Rob. Nice tribute to those heroes of the war on our homefront! Love the how to photos aswell, well done mate.......{bravo}}
