That’s it…………….

I think the Hirst arts molds are a very inexpensive way to build a castle that would cost you over $1,000 to buy and they seem to adapt well to 60mm. If anyone would like to take a stab at it, just buy one mold to play with and a small bag of Hydrostone.

The basic block mold (#40) is $34 and a 25 pond bag of Hydrostone is less than $10.

For less than $50, you can be as creative as you want to be. You can make strucures of any size, that will adapt to almost any era battle.

This is a fun product and in the hands of the right guy, I think some masterpieces might show up on this forum.

The palm trees are Pegasus (PEG6502), 4 to a package for $8.95. Trunks painted brown, with a light wash afterward. Leaves painted green with a tinge of brown and yellow on the tips for decay.

Siege Tower, Oasis and Catapult are K&C.

Portcullis over front gate is kabob skewers, Sculpey clay and Rustoleum Stone Effect paint, made by me.

Rug is Hudson Allen (HA9927) for $10.00.

Jousting tent is Schleigh Products (#42010) for 12.79, decal of dragon was stolen off internet, reduced on printer and glued on.

Ballista and battering ram is wood/twine, made by me.

Diorama table was made by me.

Castle doors were scavenged off of JG Miniature Ancient City Gate.

Rocks, water effect and shrubs are Woodland senics.

Gallows, castle, bridge and stove were from Hirst Art products.

Hope you enjoyed looking at it as much as I did making it.

Thanks for you indulgence, your patience and your interest.

Mike,
This is really a very very impressive diorama that you have achieved !
Many thanks for your details explanations and tips. I'm sure that will help me in the future.
Now I'll have to find how Hydrostone translates in French and have a look in the nearby hobby shops:)
Cheers,
Michel

Mike, this has just to have a 5 star rating! very well done indeed.

Jeff

Any chance of a few photos of the Zulu dio? Thanks.

Add 5 more stars to it Jeff and we should keep it a little quite for I'm sure Michael's getting a well deserved rest this AM after sharing his labor of love. Nice job Michael and thanks for sharing what you where up to from the get go when we first talked about it via the land line. Knowing from the begining your goal was to create a master piece you've accomplished it and what a nice way to enjoy my first cup of coffee this AM viewing the last of photos. What's next my friend?............The Lt.

Thank you all, such encouraging words. I really appreciate your taking the time to say view my castle, say hello and the heaps of praise. Your flattery makes me want to build more.

I may start some small dioramas since my office is pretty full with Zulus and Crusaders. I've already begun looking at some of the Hirst molds this morning and am planning on ordering again.

It's a great procuct, fun and really, really, really cheap. The possibilites are endless.

I'm looking at molds, #50 The Wizard's Tower, #70 Fieldstone Wall, #74 Fieldstone Bridge, #90 Basic Pyramid and #230 Clay Tile Roof.

I still have tons of bricks left and want to build some extra houses from them, maybe a village with 5-7 differnt structures. I'll post any finished products in the future.

Thanks again, Michael

Well for me this gas to be one of the best threads on the forum. It certainly is the best DIY thread. I keep looking at the hirst arts site, reading all the tips and tricks they have posted. I think this may be what I need to buy to building some type of castle backdrop for my royalty figures and then maybe some type of wall & gateway for the durbar series.

Thanks Mike for sharing the journey with us, it really has been great. I am also to looking forward to your next project and also any future additions to your current one.

Cheers

Scott

Are you Rodrigo and is that your website? Handmadehistroy.com? I love the black and white terrains from War in the East 1941-1945, and thank you for the compliment.

Pat, thanks for the compliment.

This quote by me, was in the first post on my thread,

"I have found that while I love viewing the finished products of all the talented hobbyist and modelers on here, that I mostly enjoy reading the tutorials, techniques, tricks and tips on how to make realistic dioramas. The directions on how they made their stuff look so real is what I like."

I too, really enjoy the "how to's" as much as viewing the finished product.

I'm pleased you could learn from my trial and error mistakes to a completed product.

Thanks, Michael

Simon, thanks for the watch and the compliments,

Help me please:

(1) What kind of foam board did you use on your Iraqi building?

(2) Can you tell me exact name and the maker/distributor?

(3) When you scribed the damaged brick in the doorway, how did you keep the bricks at the same flush level as each other?

That is a really nice building, Michael
