I got absolutely nothing from Tropical Storm Marco yesterday...just some rain...

but Hurricane Laura is expected to be a Category 3+ and will make land fall Wednesday night or Thursday morning...

Galveston Island is in it's path...

the city has ordered a mandatory evacuation...

a lot of my neighbors are staying...
I think I will ride it out too...

I have electric storm shutters on 90% of my house...
I do have 4 decorative arched windows in the front of my house...
and didn't want to destroy/hide the brick work with these boxey shutters...
so I never put shutters on them...
I boarded them up with some pre-cut arched sheets of plywood......

I'm mostly scared of the storm surge and getting flooded...
at least I have a 2 story house...
so I can scramble upstairs if I have too...
hopefully it won't be bad...^&grin

the city has ordered a mandatory evacuation...I think I will ride it out too. How does this work if it is mandatory?

where do you live...are you in Texas or Louisiana?

the coastal cities are ordering the mandatory evacuations...

and while they can't make you leave...

they are basically telling you that they cannot provide or will have a hard time providing medical or police assistance if you get in a jam...

so they are telling you if you ignore the order...

good luck...you're basically on your own...

where do you live...are you prone to flooding and do you have a 2 story dwelling?

Mike

Good luck with this, hopefully it wont be bad and you will not have too much worry.

Tom

thanks Tom...

it just shifted farther west and looks like it's a direct hit on Galveston Island...

now I'm getting scared...^&grin

Good luck with this Mike and stay safe!!

I wish you all the best.

Mak

Stay safe Mike, we're thinking of you mate

Take care

Martyn:)

Best of luck to you Mike.We went through one a couple of weeks ago but it wasn't too bad in my area.What a year!{eek3}

Michael,

Be careful! I'm sure you know that the worst weather related disaster in U.S. history was a hurricane hitting Galveston Island. I hope you will be safe!

Mike, looks like a Cat 3 heading toward you. Hope someone is riding this out with you. Its going to be long night or day. Have plenty fresh water on hand. It may feel like an artillery barrage on your neighborhood. Good luck.

May turn into Cat 4.{eek3} We can't catch a break this year.
Mark

Latest storm map l saw showed Laura mostly bypassing Galveston. Hopefully so. Stay safe Mike. Chris

it appears to be going into the Louisiana Lake Charles/Texas Beaumont area...
with possible 140 mph winds...
which is about 100 miles from me...
I'm mostly afraid of the flood surge here in Galveston...
which they are now describing as "unsurvivable" in some areas of direct landfall...
maybe 20 feet deep...

I just drove down the Seawall...
the Gulf...it's getting ugly...

to quote George Castanza...

"the seas was angry that day my friend...
like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli"

145 mph now...

Mark...right now there is absolutely nothing happening in Galveston...I am on the "clean side" of the hurricane and we have just had a few sprinkles so far and gusts of maybe 40-50 mph...if the hurricane tracks more eastward as expected...I will probably turn on my sprinkler system tomorrow to water my yard...seriously...I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but a little wind...and the rain band looks like it will miss both Galveston/Houston as it continues to run up the eastern border of Texas/Arkansas...some waves are splashing over the Seawall...the beach sand is no longer visible...but the lack of wind will/should hopefully diminish any surge flooding...landfall will be about midnight...and the experts say their predictions on the path become more reliable once it hits lands...which is currently tracking it on an eastern path away from Texas...I'm not saying I'm out of it yet...but this is the absolute best case scenario so far...I hope I did a lot of preparation for nothing and God bless the citizens of Louisiana...with storm surges of up to 20 feet deep...they are gonna get absolutely crushed if it keeps this path...most houses completely under water...nowhere to run...

hopefully Galveston dodged a bullet...

on a nice day...here is a normal picture of the beach with sand...notice the street and cars...
here is a picture of past hurricanes with water splashing over the Seawall...
that is the same street and the beach is covered with storm surge...the sand is gone...

here is a picture of the Seawall ...it was built in 1902...right after the 1900 Storm...built facing the Gulf of Mexico...
it is 17 feet tall...and is 10 miles long...
it protects the heart of the city...not the entire Island shoreline with beach homes on the west end...just the heart of the city...
Galveston is 32 miles long and 3 miles wide...

Absolutely...positively...definitively...utterly...categorically...and without a doubt...
nothing happened at my house...
nada...zil...nilch...

no hurricane and barely a sprinkle of rain around midnight...
the winds were insignificant...
I may have played golf in stronger winds than we got last night...

I have not taken a ride this morning...
but I don't think Galveston Island even got wet...
I actually turned on my yard sprinkler system this morning...

Galveston Island dodged a bullet...
Laura has moved on and I'm putting things back in place this morning..
I'm very happy!

I want to thank everyone for your well wishes and concerns...
lots of nice people on this forum...
thank you!
