I was Monty's double (1 Viewer)

BOB was a great film and, thankfully all the 'real' planes were available from Franco to give some of the best air combat footage probably, that we will ever see in a movie.

Another I just mentioned and have just watched was the wooden horse. I really like these POW films and the ingenuity of the pilots amazes me what they did in the circumstances. Remarkable

Agree really good. Did not think it would be but, after a few minutes even ignored the phone.

I thought Edward Fox was very good in it + lot of depth to the film

Not being picky (I may be wrong) was it not james fox who played Marloe from hut 16? There all the same but, IMO Edward was the real actor and IMO played the best englishman you could want. His role in BTF ' here's a story you will tell your grandchildren.. and mightely bored they will be' Awesome!!

Your spot on Mitch  It is James fox & thanks for pointing it out :)

Well I just watched 'I was Monty's double' again, not a classic War film but quite enjoyable, was reading about M.E Clifton James, and how he was simply forgotten after the job was done and sent back to the pay corp to see out his war, no thanks, no recognition or anything. On top of this he had to explain where he had been for five weeks!.At least on hearing of his death after the War the real Monty said what a good job he made of impersonating him at a vital time and fooling the Germans.

(the kidnap scene near end of film never happened, although the Germans were planning to kill Monty)

Suppose it would have been hard to do any other while the war was on. Its frightening just how much he looked like Monty to fool so many people brilliant bit of deception.

I don't mind a bit of poetic licence in some of the early films as they still knock stripes of some of the modern films. must have watched this one alone, over 100 times and never bore from it. Same with things like Kelly's heroes, where eagles dare, the eagle has landed just to name a few not many new ones which, I can say the same about maybe Harts war and saints and soldiers.

Just about to watch the sink the bismark in a short while.

I've just started the second of todays double Bill 'Went the day well'. I agree re the films you listed, apart from Kelly's Heroes, never really liked it.

Rob...

KH for me is farce not so much war all the 'negative waves' and crackerjacks in uniform makes it appealing

Yes thats it exactly, more a Hippyfest than War film, but I guess its not all bad.

Trying to think of my worst war film, loving the genre its hard to pick one, the dialogue in 'Battleground' is a bit hackneyed even for those days!

As I said I am a bit more forgiving with the older movies but, for me, The last drop has to be the worst ever IMO followed quite closely with the second front. Truly mind numbing.

Though one that has just come to mind typing this which, I did like was 'jacob the liar'

Well Bramley End is safe again until next time, the Germans were all killed and the only bit of England they got was that mass grave in the Churchyard. All those years of seeing Thora Hird on Sunday evenings hosting 'Songs of Praise', who knew in her young days she was an ace with a Lee Enfield!:D

Actually Thora Hird was a stalwart of Home front films in WW2,as well as 'Went the Day..' she starred in ' Next of Kin', a classic feature length film warning the British public of the Dangers of Careless talk re troop activities (a film Churchill wanted everyone to see) and also 'Go to Blazes'. Go to Blazes was a light hearted public info short explaining what to do if your house was hit by a fire bomb,Thora Hird starred alongside popular comedian of the time Will Hay and none other than Muriel George, she of axe wielding fame from 'Went the day well'.

Both good. Just finished Harts War which, I did think was a good modern movie with a decent story. One that got away is next on the repeat list

The McKenzie Break is a better film

I have not watched that for a while 'well Willi it looks llike were both in the s***e now' what a great line to end a film.
Mitch

What did you think of 633 sq & Mosquito Squadron
I loved these as a kid :D

633 squadron was one of my favourite films when I was younger and still rate it now but, I like most of what are seen as the 'classic' war films.
