Is it just a "lame excuse"? (2 Viewers)

Hi all,

so there we were, a few days ago, my wife and me, talking about what to get as a Christmas present for our grandson, who's going to be 5 years old on Christmas Day.
There's an abundance of annoying, battery-operated, noise making, funny moving stuff around already, be it in our house, at the parents or the other grandparent's house.
By then, my wife had already picked up something like, yes another one, battery operated creature, that somehow transforms from a Dinosaur to a Vehicle, or the other way around, and of course makes a variety of sounds :rolleyes2:
I then suggested, that I would try to look something up on the internet, before any more stuff gets bought.
Wanted to say "any more junk" but didn't do it :wink2:

Spent a few hours that night on my research, clicked the "add to cart" button at the end and arranged for timely shipping.

As a kid I had my Toy Soldiers for many years, best Toys ever, and I had a model train set, and a good number of other more or less valued items.
What I never had, was a Carrera Slot Car Racing Set.

Well, that has changed now ^&grin
I consider a slot car racing track as one of the very classic Toys of the late 20th century.

Now I am looking forward to seeing how well it will be received by a young kid, born in the 21st century?
Although only barely 5 by age, my grandson is rather familiar with stuff like X-Box, Play Station, handheld video games, I-Pad, Smartphones, etc. etc.
Will be interesting to see, if a car race that doesn't happen on a screen, can attract his attention.
I sure hope so.

Now, did I just buy that, using my grandson as a "lame excuse" to finally make a childhood dream come true?
Or did I make a good decision by buying a valuable toy for today's world?

I am not sweating over the answer ^&grin , I gonna love it either way :redface2:, but seriously hope that he does too, so when spring time comes around, we can get a couple of 4' by 8' sheets of plywood, occupy the garage, and work on extending the racetrack ^&cool {eek3} ^&grin

When Christmas Eve is done, and the little guy is off to sleep, I will be setting up this race track on the living room floor, in front of the Christmas Tree, so when he gets up in the morning, he will walk right up on it :D

Will keep you updated next week, how it worked out.

Here's what I got, by now still packaged in the shipping box and awaiting the setup.

Cheers!

Konrad

You have kind of answered your own question in that you don't care either way!! You will get enjoyment and, as you say, it will more than likely initially grab the grandson. I am sure though the modern stuff will prevail as it always does as young people want the modern, new gadgets and are forward looking unlike most older people who seem to be the opposite.

Nice set anyway
Mitch

I think he will enjoy it Konrad, my nephews who are aged 6 & 8 also love computer games, etc...but they love to see my trains and toy soldiers when they come to visit.

Wish someone would set one up under my tree ^&grin, great idea i reckon and im looking forward to his response as well.

Looks like a great idea and very nice present ! I am sure he will remember this present in his adult life for years to come ! :wink2:

That's a great gift. When I was five my parents gave me a pile of free paint stirrers from the hardware store and told me they we're pick sticks.

Wish someone would set one up under my tree ^&grin, great idea i reckon and im looking forward to his response as well.

I believe it, Wayne, no doubt about it ^&grin
Wonder, how many of the adults, who come by on Christmas Day, will get excited?
Might have to stay in line to drive a round :smile2:

Video games etc. have their place but there's still a lot to be said for anything you can actually hold. My kids all loved toy farms, soldiers, cars etc. The girls and "the boy" ( by the way that's what his older sisters call him!^&grin)

Konrad:

I don't think you have anything to worry about. He is going to love it. Your Grandson is very blessed to have a Grandfather like you.

You are already a gift in and of yourself.

Best,
Jason

Slot cars sounds like a wonderful gift. A great cheap toy is a rubber band gun. You and your grandson can set up plastic soldiers and shoot them down. I also loved the rubber band driven balsa airplane.

Good idea .. If you play with him...
Oh... don't forget to buy him a book or two
My granson is now 14 . When he was the age of yours, we usualy bought some table games and played with him, and some books . That is the important thing, I think; sharing activities . To many peoples.. . buy something for the children to play alone and be quiet . No, share activities with him . And books .....
Today, he is 14 and as lot of kids like to play Xbox, PS3,( me to ), he make some sport and read.. at least 2 books a week .
Enjoy every day you can with him
Best

I like it:salute::.....Good Choice...1:32 scale slot cars always fun....Just let him win some races{sm4}

It worked out great :smile2:

Late night on Christmas Eve I set up the track.
Had to move to our little utility or storage room, since my good wife didn't like the idea of placing it in front of the Christmas tree in the living room.
We expected and had many visitors on Christmas Day, so it would have been in the way of everyone.

The little guy was very surprised when we opened the door and he got the first look at it.
We had a blast when checking it out and doing our first test runs.
We also didn't want to leave the room for a long time and then kept coming back to it all day long ^&grin
Here are some pics. On the first two he's still wearing his Christmas pyjamas, and the others are from later in the day.

Heard a lot of "Wow" and "Awesome" from the older people as well who came to visit.

Not positive who enjoys it more, but I do believe that the little guy and me can call it even ^&grin :wink2:

Have a very strong feeling that this is not a "one and only" or "done" project, as I am already thinking a lot about extensions, accessories, various cars, etc. :redface2: :wink2:

Konrad

P.S. Toy Soldiers just got a very serious competition ^&grin

This is awesome, I am glad your grandson (and yourself) enjoyed it Konrad. What a great way to spend some quality time together.

Merry Christmas!

This is what Christmas is all about. The joy on that boy's face says it all.

Well done Konrad!!!!!
