JJD 2023 Advent Calendar Sketches (3 Viewers)

Great for Zulu collectors but that range has been done to death in all scales. I think only the Napoleonic, ACW and the World Wars have been done more.^&grin

I'm very, very happy to see John take on the Zulu War. Don't care who has done it before. - Every figure maker has a recognizable style, I like JJD's, I collect JJD.

I agree Mark, it has been done to death. But i am a big collector of this period and there is a lot missing. Every maker has smashed The 24th Foot, but there is so much more. John will do something amazing.
Merry Christmas

I sure he will. I am just amazed how this little war (compared to others) has kept interest for so many, including myself.

Thunder on the Plains
Cheyenne Dog Soldier

I found us a Christmas present!

collector of ''Thunder of the Plains''!

here is an overview of what the figurine taken from the sketch should be...
what do you say about that?
the raven feather headdress is magnificent!
I'm a little afraid that it will be very fragile to put in a box...

at the same time, I'm familiarizing myself with the site because it's the first time I'm sending a photo...
and I find that I didn't miss out on this action!

only the tomahawk is different and the whistle has (for the moment) disappeared..
the pose, the head is advantageously turned by 45
the outfit is identical in every way
the wrist which holds the weapon is slightly turned backwards, which gives even more charisma than in the sketch.

I was able to find a picture of these warriors in combat with the whistle...
I always wonder what use it could have been in combat...

I would assume the high pitch sound of those whistles would be rather unnerving to the enemy, kind of like Zulus rattling their shields, or the Confederate rebel yell.

I think the childhood veiwing of the movie ''Zulu" sparked an interest for many collectors early in life. - At least it did for me. :)

Now I'm back from our Christmas celebrations with our gals and grandkids I decided to do some statistics for the Advent Calendar sketches this year.

I have chosen two categories or Era and Region,
and it shows that by far the most for Region are from the 'New World' (North & South America) being 9 of the 24 sketches.

This was followed equally with 6 each for Asia and Europe.

The listing for regions are:
  • America 9
  • Asia 6
  • Europe 6
  • Africa 3

As far are Historical Era goes, the most are from the Ancient Era being also 9 sketches.

The listing for Eras are:
  • Ancient 9
  • 19c 7
  • Medieval 5
  • 18c 3

Interesting ?????

John

Thanks John for your breakdown. The 18th Century is my pick for next year. The Jacobite series continues to grow. Looking forward to what John has in mind for these sets.

Best wishes for 2024.

I am happy there was a Jacobite sketch but Mike got me all excited when he mentioned The Jacobite range. I thought we would get a few releases. One is better than nothing.

Looking foward to seeing more of the Roman Empire !
I am with you Steve, very happy there are more cavalry coming. A few more mounted officers would be good. I would love John to do Imperial Romans. I know its an anochronism but i only collect Imperial Romans and match them against my horde of Gauls and every other enemy

When someone asked about how many of the sketches had made it to the released figure stage it mad3 me think of the drawing from last year or the year before of the US Cavalry butterflys. I would love to see a dismounted set of these guys released
