JJD 2023 Advent Calendar Sketches (1 Viewer)

Very cool looking warrior. Cant wait to see what his headresss looks like when painted

we can see this result (very successful) by consulting the reference SSB06 (thunder of the plains theme) at JJD since it is a dog soldier decorated with his headdress of crow feathers.
but in this sketch, I have the impression that the headdress is even more daring...

Can anyone tell me what this warrior has in his mouth...
I don't know this accessory, nor what it is used for... a blowgun ?

It's a whistle made from the wing bone of an eagle. Such whistles emitted a high-pitched note and was used quite often by Plains Indian warriors in battle and during the sacred Sun Dance.

SSB06 is not a Cheyenne Dog Soldier, JJD identifies the figure as Sioux (Lakota) and I believe the bonnet on that one is meant to represent owl feathers.

This is the first Cheyenne warrior in the Thunder on the Plains range. All the previous releases have been Souix warriors. SSB-06 represents a Souix warrior class. In my opinion the sketch was inspired by a painting done by artist Z. S. Liang. with some minor differences such as the bone whistle in the sketch's mouth. The sketch shows a Dog Soldier wearing a "no retreat sash" that has been impaled to the ground by a society lance. The bonnet he is wearing is made of raven feathers.

a big thank you for all this information and corrections which have informed me very well.
superb photo from which the sketch is inspired..
JJD therefore announces a new Amerindian series, this time illustrating the Cheyennes...
if this is confirmed, the continuity of this theme is assured!
Faced with such success in terms of sales, JJD must not stop there, for 2024!
I currently have the entire ''Thunder on the Plains'' series, the Sioux from TM and some of the Amerindian horsemen from K&C totaling 40 pieces... I hope to present a diorama on the forum soon..

indeed, you are right..
SSB06 he is a Sioux and the headdress is not made of crow feathers but certainly of owl feathers, less long and thicker...
that's why the headdress in this sketch seemed more daring to me...the crow feathers are longer and finer...
JJD is very keen on historical reality.

That is something to keep in mind...Below is last year's 25th Day post. Very happy seeing this one, but so far, this new series has yet to see the light of day. - Fingers crossed for next year.

I am looking forward to the Jacobites and i like the look of the new Saxon Priest. Has anyone looked at the previous 3 years and seen which figures from the Advent calendar have been released? A bit of a nute question for me really, as there is always something from JJD which will take my TS budget, but would be interesting to know.

Definitely over half of them. We need to keep in mind its an advent calender and not a firm promise of a future release. It definitely creates hope and it adds joy to my festive season. And if and when they become figures i get more joy

This is my 4th year posting the Advent Calendar for John. I can say that most of the sketches have eventually been made into figures/sets, although some have taken over 2 years to see the light of day.

And worth the wait. Thanks again for posting the pics Mike, only 2 to go. Hoping we get some more Jacobites

Can't comment on ranges I don't collect or have an interest in but Boudicca and her Chariot was well over a year as were the fighting Roman Auxiliary Cavalry. All of which were well worth the wait. But I do wish as I'm sure all of us do, that they would go from sketches to figures released more quickly, though I guess that isn't just a matter of money, but factories skilled enough having excess capacity to produce them as quickly as we'd like !
Ho Hum, if we were only eternal, the wait wouldn't seem so long ! ^&grin

For you LoR fans, it seems only the Elves would not be concerned about John finishing an awesome range he started. Note The Jacobite Rebellion.
It is worth the wait.
But John is younger than some of us so we can't hold our breath.
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all!

Totally agree with Jason on this and still wish I was living in Oz. UK is bleak this time of year, despite the festive season, and collecting was much cheaper downs under. But nonetheless the advent calendar is great and wets our appetite for what might come. Some will be fairly soon, others may take a year or two and some may never see the light of day.

But there is so much to enjoy from the most prolific of manufactories in recent years. I collect all the ranges, getting about 80% of John's output per month over the past five years, but if this increased I would have to be more selective. So I just wait for the monthly releases and revel in the joy this brings me.

I would love to see the 'Clive in India' range released that was previewed in a sketch last year and then in promotional shots throughout 2023. But I will be patient. I was sad to see the Wellington in India finished/paused but am really excited by all the ancients coming through together with Mongols and expansions of ACW and AWI ranges.

And lest we forget other manufacturers that drain our funds. William Britain has really come on in the last year or two, K&C Tiger tanks (I had to get the winter version) and I love the Falklands War stuff, Team Miniatures do some wonderful figures (I am in for the Polish Winged Hussars) and I got so much First Legion sale stuff over the past few years and my first War Park vehicles.

And so its time to stop work, take a sip of a favourite tipple, read that Toy Soldier Collector magazine that has remained unopened since early December on my office desk and look ahead to a wonderful array of John's work being delivered from Clive at Grey Goose.

I wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy 2024 to one and all.
