Ken Osen's Visit To My Home (1 Viewer)

I was just looking at your backdrop again, Mike...you really got that sfumato effect on your hills. Leonardo would have been proud! :)

Thank you kindly Nicholas. This was my first attempt ever at painting scenery. I really tried to use shading and vanishing techniques to emphasize the sun lit areas in order to give the backdrop a more 3-D and "real" effect. I actually used a photograph I found on line of a horse ranch in northern Virginia as a guide/reference.

Very impressive, the close-up photos really demonstrate how much effort went into these displays.

Really enjoyed staring at the photos. What an amazing diorama set-up to have!

Mike,
What else can I add to this other than that is just a spectacular display you have in your collection thanks to the master of scenery, Ken himself.

Nice to see you enjoying your collection and enjoying the hobby, THIS is truly what the hobby is all about, not arguing over which manufacturer is the best, what is wrong with the latest tank or complaining about the secondary toy soldier market.

Kudos to you for actually ENJOYING this great hobby.............

Respectfully,
George

Thank you all for the kind remarks: Scott, OzDigger, Noah, Nicholas, Titus, and George . . . .

Beautiful display and figures.

Looks like you have at least 100 men per side going at each other!
Thanks for sharing.

Good morning Kegel. Ken showed me the sculpts that he is currently working on for the Sudan War range. In order to see these I was sworn to secrecy. Based on what I saw, I am sure the Sudan collctors will be very pleased and excited about the releases going into 2011.

Well, Ericka and I returned home late last night. We did a fair amount of driving and this road trip also took me as far West as Peosta, Iowa, the headquarters and distribution facility for 1st gear/ W. Britain. We really got slammed by thunderstorms the last two days of the trip so I am glad to be home.

I have to say I had a really good time visiting Mike at his home both days... what a great host! Believe it or not outside of the shows that Ericka, Richard and I do, I rarely get to set up that many figures. I also cannot remember the last time I just played around with figures and scenics just for fun.

If you look closely at the images you will see ACW figures I have sculpted for several manufacturers over the years. Stylistically they all work very well together, but I know that the most current work is a bit more polished. I suppose that comes after sculpting a few hundred patterns, and I hope to get even better with future work.

I was good to spend a fair amount of time with a fellow collector and also to set up the displays. This helps bring a sharper focus to what is needed in poses and subject matter for the future. There will certainly be more units, including Zouaves offered soon, but as suggested they will not be 5th NY for the first release. There are many great units to visit yet, it is just a matter of time as this particular range will continually get updated. As always, suggestions are welcomed.

Both Alan Ball and I have added new sculpts to the overall product offerings for 1st Gear/W. Britain. The most recent projects have included the AZW, the Sudan, WWI, Napoleonics and Delhi Durbar. A new mini flyer will soon be issued with some of these items pictured, including some new scenics. Chicago should be interesting for all W. Britain collectors this year!

All the Best,
Ken

Hi All!
Well I have finally taken some time to sift through all of the images Mike and I took... at least the one's on my camera. I thought I would share the four that I liked the best. It was hard, but these four seemed to either tell a story or convey excitement.

Somewhere in Pennsylvania, summer 1863...The butternut and grey tide surged irresistibly forward...

The colonel urged the men forward as he crossed the road...

Now victory seemed to be within grasp as the human tide rolled toward the other side of the turnpike...

A few defiant Federals continued to fire as First Corps deployed immediately to the left and right...

What will the end of the day bring?

Ken, you did a good job at picking great photos and then turning them into a short story. Hope we can do this again without too much time passing by.
:) Mike

Hi Mike,
I am looking forward to the next photo session. Hopefully the snow will not come too early this year so we can do this after the dust settles... Chicago and Williamsburg dust so to speak!

I am looking forward to seeing some new pictures after your new photo lights are delivered.

So is 1st Corps deploying yet?

Talk to you soon,
Ken

Ken

When are you coming to Williamsburg, VA ??

Ron

Hi Ron,
This will be the second annual Military History Weekend sponsored by Osprey, Casemate and W. Britain. This is a toy soldier, military history book, and militaria show on October 15 and 16. All manufacturers will be represented.

This would be a hop skip and a jump for you, so I hope to see you!
Ken
