I received today from Corey (who was selling them on the Forum) my first Jenkins plane, the Sopwith Camel B7270, which I believe was the first one in the series. It's also my first WW I plane and all I can say what an outstanding model. It ranks up there with some of the wooden K & C planes I have.

High praise, Brad. The JJD aircraft are all excellent models. Camel B7270 was flown by 10 victory ace Capt. Roy Brown in the April 21, 1918 action in which Manfred von Richthofen was KIA. Brown was officially awarded the victory by the RAF but it is most probable that von R was killed by Australian ground fire. The JJD model is an accurate rendition of Brown's Camel, down to the missing fuselage roundels and the red and white tailplanes, both details which are often shown incorrectly. Good get. -- Al

I did a little buying from Corey too and can't wait to see my package. You got a great plane. This Camel was my only WWI plane purchased until now, and I loved it from the moment I opened it. Good choice! JJD did an oustanding job with these.

The upcoming white D.VII looks amazing. That one makes for a striking display with the Goring figure. That may be the best yet. If John does the Rickenbacker SPAD that will be a close second. Of the planes released so far my favorite is the LvR triplane.

I agree with the LVR as the best of the bunch! I hope this WW1 plane line continues with new aircraft.

Agreed about the white Goering plane. It is high on my list too. Gorgeous!! I also would like the SPAD too. Time for an American addition.

Does anyone have both of the von Richthofen figures that JJD makes? I have Lothar but not Manfred. I am curious as to whether the Lothar figure is taller than the Manfred figure (he should be, by a half a head or so). Manfred was somewhere between 5'5"and 5'7.5", while Lothar was 6'. There is a noticible size difference in all the photos of them together, so I am hoping the same is true of the figures. -- Al

I sat them side-by-side and the LvR figure is taller. Looks about right.

Wow, that is a nice surprise. I'm glad the figures are not the same size. If you normally put all your figures together they would be the same hight. I have this same issue with my 28mm collections. Everyone is the same.

I'm glad that John is mixing the pilots up a bit. It makes them more interesting in a set up when they are all not the same hight.

A picture for comparison. The size difference is slight, but that is to be expected at 1/30 scale:

I saw the new KC WWI planes today. They are not as shiny as they appear in the photos. Which is a good thing. The pilots are nicely done with the Voss figure the best of the bunch. As for the planes, I liked the Red MvR the best; Goring second and Voss last (even though it's the most interesting). The painting and detail is not up to John's planes, but still worthy of comparison.

This is interesting and useful info. I am about 2 weeks away from getting the Voss Albatros but I suspect it will be the only KC WW1 aircraft I buy. From the forum members reports, first-hand observations, and the photos, I just feel that the JJD aircraft are the more accurate, attractive models. -- Al

Finally caught up my JJD WW1 collection. Got the pilots I had been missing. The Manfred von Richthofen set, that comes with his dog, Moritz, is quite a neat little scene. The real jewels were Bishop and Maclaren, both excellent sculpts, with outstandingly detailed painting. There is something so very WW1 about the Maclaren figure as he stands with his crop held behind his back, posed in front of his silver nosed Camel. I have also come to like the Bishop Nieuport to the point where I now believe it is my favorite JJD aircraft. It just looks so iconic in the silver and blue finish, with the Bishop figure standing next to it. I actually just plain love them all.:redface2: -- Al

Did you ever get your KC planes? Just curious what you thought.

Sure did. Got the Voss Albatros yesterday. Put a short review in the KC section under The Albatros have Landed thread. Overall, I was very impressed with it, but I prefer the JJD aircraft because of several factors I didn't want to get into on the KC board. -- Al

Very diplomatic. I was impressed with the KC pilot figures and even liked the MvR figure better than the JJ one. I see that you painted the spinner. You are a brave man. If you have a picture, I would like to see how it came out.

Unfortunately, I still have no camera and no way to post pictures. The Testors red is a dead match for the red heart on the side of the Voss Albatros. It just looks fantastic with the spinner painted red. I still don't understand why KC painted it silver when all available source material depicts the spinner as red (although black has been represented as a second possibility in some sources). The same goes for the other 2 KC Albatros. The Richthofen spinner was definitely red, not the KC silver, and the Goering spinner was white, not silver. As to being brave, I'm really quite a coward when it comes to altering my high dollar models. This is the only "major" work I've ever done (besides some small work on my CS Tigers) and I had my mind made up to do it before I even ordered the plane. In this case, accuracy trumped original condition/resale value. This is probably the only KC WW1 aircraft I will buy as I have issues with them when compared to the JJD aircraft but it was worth the money. -- Al
