Roy, it certainly does appear to be a 'B', with the flight leader stripe right aft of it. This would, in all likelihood, make this MacGregory's B6299. -- Al

Moe,

I think they're referring to an actual physical calendar which you receive if you belong to the JJD Collectors Club. Don't believe there is an online version.

Brad

Ahh, thanks for the redirect!:)

I believe that y'all have the model correctly identified. Thought the rightmost figure might be new, also, but he's the "RFC painter." Corgi modeled this aircraft in 1/48 several years ago:

The Corgi part is still widely available, BTW.

I kind of hate to see JJD focusing on some of these more obscure liveries/pilots when its got some nice alternatives. In particular, the range would be all the better if Jenkins' S.E.5A and Albatros got more attention, at least IMHO. An esteemed member of the forum has expressed a belief that KotS may have reached its useful limits for collectors. Were that to prove prophetic, it'd be a terrible shame for Werner Voss and James McCudden never to have seen the light of day under the JJD banner.:(

Certainly agree about the lack of Voss and McCudden. I have proposed both of these aircraft/pilots to John on more than one occasion. I have more hope for the Voss than the McCudden simply based on the fact that the current JJD triplane would require little altering to represent the Voss tripe. All that really needs to be done to the current model is to drop the wing-tip skids, add the correct paint and serial # and you have a Voss tripe. The McCudden SE-5 has a few differences from the Mannock SE-5 that would require a bit more altering, such as the exhaust pipes and landing gear struts. Still, McCudden absolutely needs to be represented. Might as well throw in the Rhys-Davids SE-5 as long as we are talking Voss and McCudden. Would make for a fantastic theme display, like the von Richthofen and Brown pairing.:wink2: -- Al

Moe mentioned that someone said this range may be nearing its useful limit. Is that actually the case; does John intend to wind it down. I have also noticed that in the case of the German planes, they seem to be more from around 1917 and 1918. Has anyone asked John if he has any intentions to make earlier planes?

Brad, I don't know whether John is winding the KotS series down or not. What I would say from what I know is that the aircraft are taking a backseat, at the moment, to his other ventures with the WW1 tanks and vehicles. He is really enjoying doing them. The tanks and vehicles have delayed his aircraft in the delivery schedule. I guess there is only so much capacity at his factory.
He has mentioned a specific interest in the early war aircraft, but we really haven't discussed that subject too deeply beyond 1 or 2 types. He is interested in later war aircraft, such as the Fokker D-7, but there is a complication in the painting with those. I am very interested to see where the KotS is headed. I don't care where it goes as long as it stays a viable series. Any aircraft of the WW1 period are fine by me. -- Al

Thanks Al. I'm contemplating purchasing my first one so hope he doesn't slow down the line too much. Perhaps he used the range as a gateway to get people interested in WW I. Not that I know that much about WW I planes but what early German planes did you suggest to him. In looking online I saw some interesting ones like the Taube, Fokker Eindecker, Albatross D.II, Aviatik B.1, and ACO C.II (which is a very interesting looking recon plane).

Brad

I really love this series, but as a collector there are only so many planes that I can buy and display. They take up a lot of room and cost a bundle. So I'm cherry picking now. I suspect a lot of folks are in this position. They are beautiful though. There is something unique about those WWI planes. Particularly when you realize that no human had flown a plane until just a few year prior to the war. An amazing leap in technology.

Jack, this is one magnificent model. The level of detail is really unbelievable, especially since a lot of it is unseen once the kit is assembled, such as the oxygen and the bombs. Can't wait to see the Gotha as it progresses. What a beast! Where did the figure come from? Is it part of the kit or is it aftermarket? Love all the control rigging that has been done. Great things to come. ^&cool -- Al

For those who may not know, the kit is made by Wingnuts. They seem to have a lot of WW I kits for those who are good at assembling and painting, which excludes me on both counts {eek3}

Hi Martin,

Ought to make for quite a showpiece! And it looks to be almost completed.:salute::

Looking good Martin....can't wait to see it completed! Which colour scheme are you planning on?

Unfortunately some of the details will have to wait. My father is the model maker and I rang to see how it was going. My mother answered the phone and apparently she was trying to talk him down from the roof where he had taken the Gotha while cursing Wingnuts and God in equal measure. Apparently there are some issues with the plans, missing pieces and a wing that does not fit the way it is supposed to! Iwill speak to him tomorrow and see how it progresses. Hopefully he will be down by then.

Oh my. I sure hope the Gotha doesn't claim another victim. Get him a ladder! -- Al

Perhaps a wing nut is missing. Sorry, couldn't resist :redface2:

Hope you both figure it out.

My mother talked my father off the roof and construction has continued.

Excellent. Glad to hear your father got down safely. Gravity can be a real pain when used incorrectly. Now, the Gotha looks beautiful. I spy what looks like Sopwith Camel insignia lurking in the background. Is the Gotha destined for clandestine operations? Is it to bomb London under the guise of the RFC? Those Huns can be dastardly and deceitful and I wouldn't put it past them!:wink2:^&grin -- Al

It's looking good.

I really like the Wingnut wings kits, but I don't think my modelling skills would do the kits justice!
