Winter arrived last night with a foot of heavy wet snow - too much to shovel Will even be tough for the snow blower. If it wasn't for 4X4 I don't know if I could have made it out of the driveway. But the storm has passed and is on it's way to New England

Terry

Thank you for sending the storm up here to Maine. We were supposed to only get 1-3 inches according to the forecasters but we are currently over 6 inches with at least 8 hours still to go.

Time for hot chocolate and my latest toys.

Stay warm and safe.

Sorry Larry. I was aiming at Boston ^&grin

Stay warm Terry and Larry!:smile2:

Thanks Louis .... but that will be a bit difficult tonight. Temps in single numbers and approaching ZERO ..{sm2}
We had about 8" - 9" of snow then it turned to rain for the last 2 hours; which really means that we now have 6" - 8" inches of SOLID ICE!

John, I guess i can ask you the same question.... or Mike Miller how do you guys stand the HEAT and Humidity. I would suffer.

With cold you simply put on another sweater .... or a pair of fluffy long-johns. {eek3}

It has to get down to -20 before it bothers me. at -30 it's becoming unpleasant and at -40 mechanical things like cars stop working. It has to be colder than -30 to really bother me and I would rather have -30 than +90 with high humidity

It looks like you will not like to be in the Mid-Coast Maine, Terry.
Tonight, with the wind chill, the temps are going to be -31 to -33. {eek3}{sm2}

Hey John, wanna come up for a polar bear dip in the ocean?

Thank god i don't live where you guys do!

Hey Brad,
Generally, I like cold weather, but this level is even to much for me.

According to the weather station the temps in Mid-cast area plummeted to -18 degrees with a wind chill factor of -47 at its worst last night.
When it gets that cold, the tree limbs snap and litter the ground as if a hurricane passed thru. My yard is littered with broken limbs and branches. Actually ...:rolleyes2: with the heavy winds last night it was sorta' a mini-hurricane (Winds were 45 - 55 MPH).

I was up every three to four hours checking and adjusting the heaters around the pipes in all my bathrooms (6 of them) and along the COLD side of the house where the winds are the worst.

But, typical of Maine ... we are -5 degrees now .... 5" - 6" of snow predicted for tomorrow and Sunday ... THEN ... temps are going to be 55 - 58 on Tuesday. CRAZY man, just CRAZY!

This week has been GROSS! Usually doesn't happen until January .... going to make for a long awful Winter if it keeps up! Looks like we are on deck for 9"+ of snow this weekend and highs in the negative digits {eek3}

Sounds like such fun wind Larry! Did you all know that Rochester (MN) is the second windiest city??? I scoffed when my real estate agent said that 11 years ago when I was looking at houses prior to moving here....and it checked out! Still does as a matter of fact...

While Chicago is dubbed ‘The Windy City’, it seems there are 10 other cities in America that are actually windier, according to The Weather Channel.

The list was based off of average annual wind speed data from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center. These are cities with a population of at least 100,000, as of the latest U.S. census estimate. In Abilene, our average wind speed is 11.9 mph while Amarillo, rated the windiest, had an average wind speed of 13.6 mph.

Three other Texas cities also joined the top 10 list, which proves that wearing skirts or toupees in the Lonestar State is probably not a good idea.

Top 10 Windiest Cities in America According to The Weather Channel
Amarillo, Texas (Average wind speed of 13.6 mph)
Rochester, Minnesota (Average wind speed of 12.6 mph)
Lubbock, Texas (Average wind speed of 12.4 mph)
Boston, Massachusetts (Average wind speed of 12.3 mph)
Wichita, Kansas (Average wind speed of 12.2 mph)
Fargo, North Dakota (Average wind speed of 12.2 mph)
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Average wind speed of 12.2 mph)
Corpus Christi, Texas (Average wind speed of 12 mph)
Abilene, Texas (Average wind speed of 11.9 mph)
Buffalo, New York (Average wind speed of 11.8 mph)

When my bother re-shingled my house a few years back he complained about the wind in very colorful terms! Since I was up there helping, I agreed! Our ladder blew over once - that was fun! Luckily a neighbor came home around the time we needed to come down. Worst case scenario one of us would have jumped off the roof and onto the deck!

Yeah...................so anyway, while I'm not a fan of the three H's (Hazy, Hot and Humid), but those temperatures are just nuts.

Last night we got down to about 4 degrees air temperature, minus 10 to 20 with the wind chill and the wind was howling pretty good here last night.

I packed and shipped a raftload of orders today, was in and out of my building; as long as the sun is out, it's all good, it's when the sun goes down that you get chilled to the bone.

SIX bathrooms?

Well the good news is when you get older and your prostate is the size of a watermelon, you won't have far to travel in any one direction to find a mens room now will you.

And the whole up every three to four hours to check your heaters............I can just see you wandering the house in your cap and long johns with one of those old timey candle holders with the handle on the side; again, no thanks to that.....................good luck Nanook of the North................

I suppose that's the Winter schedule - when one bathroom gets full it's on to the next. At a bathroom lasting about 3 weeks before it's full - 6 of them is 4 to 5 months of capacity - enough to get through the cold weather.

Why not just get a temperature alarm/freeze alarm?

Terry

Yeah...................

That's a pretty accurate picture, except you didn't mention the large polar bear slipper ....{sm4}

SIX bathrooms?

Ya ... remember my house is a 16 - 17 room old Inn and Sea Merchant house built in 1798 - 1801.
Of course I have done extensive renovation over the years.
As an operating, Inn it had 8 bathrooms but I got rid of two during construction.

Wow. You have plenty of room for the Japanese Imperial Fleet and the Revolutionary War.{sm4}

I'd rather prevent the freeze than be notified that it is frozen.

The alarms warn that heating conditions are deteriorating and give a warning before freezing. There are different types of monitors for various plumbing configurations.

I love historical homes (mine was built in 1843), and would love to see photos of yours.
