The Lincoln Log figures were made in the 1940's- 50's to go with the wooden building logs the company sold and also figures for model railroaders. They are solid cast and sturdy. Almost BB gun proof.:) Thought I would show a few that would not pass muster today. John

Ah the Lincoln Log figures....back in the early 1970's my buddy John & I had

a little shop in N.J. selling antique Toy Trains. One of my customers insisted I

find him the "little metal brakeman" figures he had as a kid. Every weekend

when he came in our shop he would ask me "Did you find my little metal

brakeman figures yet?"

This went on for months, every time I went to York or another train show I

would look for these for him. Finally one day I found a fellow that had a little

box of them....he wanted $100 which was quite a lot. I knew my customer

Rudy really wanted these figures so I made my best deal and bought them.

Next weekend Rudy comes in......"Hey John did you find my little metal

breakman yet?" I tell him I finally found them and present him with the

beautiful box of like new little figures.

"Great" he says.....and buys 1.

Theres a lesson in there somewheres.......I'm still trying to sort it out.

LOL great, great story, I'm still chuckling because you reminded me of a similar experience many years ago. A chum of mine-a Scots! (I shoulda known) used to collect old figures pre-'70's of the 7th Cavalry and the Sioux Indian made by Crescent or Johilco I think??. Anyway talking about his collection one day he showed me a very old catalogue and said he would give his right arm-"his right arm" to get hold of this Custer figure that was issued with this particular set-as he had spent years trying to locate one.
As he lived in Scotland I didn't have regular contact with him but he was keen as mustard re his US/Indian War collection. On a business trip to New York a year or so later I'm in a kinda second-hand dime store during some downtime and lo there on the shelf standing proud was the George Armstrong figure with a couple of his troopers, a pair of crawling Indians and a chief with a tomahawk. I scooped the lot up for maybe 10 or 12 bucks.
Got back to the UK pleased as punch and phoned Sam
"Sam great news I've found Custer"
Sam "Sorry-What?"
Me "The Custer figure Sam-you know give your right arm for him-I found one in New York with a couple of spare Indians"
Silence on the phone
"Och man I sold that lot on about a year ago-I'm big into massed bands now but if you should see the old Britain's RAF Band set on your travels........"
Me "Bye Sam"

John the experience didn't cost me a 100 bucks and I eventually ended up removing the figure off of his base stripped him of his gloss paint and matte painted him in Civil War duds (picture attached) and worse I've still got those darn crawling Indians in my stash somewhere but thanks for the memories!

John, I have a number of the LL cowboy and indian figures and 4 flat boxex of lincoln logs that I had as a child back in the 1950's ... gawd, am I that old. Anyway, I still think they're great even though the detail is not like today's figures. Great nostalgic thread. Mike

I receivied Lincoln Logs as a kid but never realized they also had figures. Thanks for the photos. I really enjoyed them.

And Njja, good story. Hope you were able to sell off the rest eventually.

John

Reb:

And many thanks for your story as well! Thats what really makes collecting fun to me. My most prized possesions are the items with an interesting story behind them!

Anyone can walk up and drop a ton of cash to buy an instant collection.....but they won't have the fun memories another collector might have that took the time to build an interesting collection.

In all my various train cases I have 3 or 4 of these "Little Metal Brakemen" and of course the engineer, porter, waiter....and all the rest of the gang.....I still have them now 35 years later.

There is one little addition to my story, Rudy (the customer) also had me looking out for "The little Lionel Dwarf Track Signals" of course they had to be like new with the original box. Well of course I found those also, when Rudy
said "Oh Wow I'll take those" I said you know I kind of like those myself, tell you what I'll sell you the next set I find.

Still have them! Never found another set.......to bad.:D:)

You know I had so much fun finding them I just brought them home! I have had many chances to sell them since, but they are part of the family!

Heres a shot of one little group.....pardon the dust!

Nice collection of the little railroad people especially with the locomotive and signal. Nice picture and thanks for the story and pictures. Leadmen

John thank you for the great thread, and the wonderful pictures of the

Lincoln Logs and their early figures! Makes me want to go out and find an old

tube of them right now!:D

Nothing as nice as a good story with some interesting pictures on a Saturday

afternoon!:)

Your welcome. I enjoy this. Now you caused me to remember a story of the time my son had some kid show up from blocks away wanting to see his Linoel trains. He was also carrying a old broken Lionel tender. A red light should have went off. After he left my locomotive had a old rusty broken tender and ours' was missing. Of course the kid denied it later but was never allowed in our house again. That is why I did not post a picture of the locomotive. My wife is the one who looks for the little guys at shows. John

Njja, Thanks for the photos. It's great to see these pieces which wake up happy memories. I recognize that traffic light, and remember having one. And that army vehicle looks like a Dinky Toy that had two other pieces attached to the back. Finally, in the bottom most photo, above the locomotive we see the bottom of a box with a drawing of a truck on it. Looks like a set of wooden blocks. Looks interesting. Thanks again and now I'm off for my 'don't get too-out-of-shape walk.' :) Cheers
