I`ll be in London for a short port visit April 26.I want to try and do some tourist thing before I head back to the ship and then head home to Halifax.I`m trying to get a room at the ALL RANKS CLUB in London right now.May be if any one is in the area we can meet up for a beer and show a lost Canadian sailor around London for a day??

If someone could let me know what time the Channging of the Guard takes place and where is the best place to get pictures would be?Plus does anyone know who the guard is?Any help would be great.I`m haveing a very hard time with the internet on board ship,it`s very slow for us.

Hi Dave - Unless it has changed (doubtful) - the Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace begins at 11.30 am and ends at noon. However, the bands and others start arriving a bit earlier - so I would get there for around 11.00 at the latest - to get your camera ready and nab a good spot to take pics.

I think it's Scots Guards on 26th ( see links below) sorry I can't be there myself - as I won't be in England - never mind London, but would have enjoyed meeting up if I could have! Have a good one anyway - Johnnybach

11:15 Guards,with bands, start arriving
11:30 Official start time
12:00 Guard change ceremony ends
April 2013 - every day (EXCEPT for 1 and 21 April)

Also found this info......

"First of all the "Old" guards from St James's palace march up the Mall to join the others at Buckingham palace.

The "New" guards march from Wellington Barracks towards the palace. I believe they go up birdcage walk but don't quote me on that. I hear the best place to get a good view (and photographs) is outside their barracks as they leave.

The ones down at horse guard parade are the mounted "life guards". I believe they change daily... the 2 sentries on horseback (on whitehall) change every hour."

Another great thing to do is get one of those open top Bus tours of London, they do many routes and take in all the sights/shops/museums etc.

If you are doing a lot of travel on the tube be sure to get a one day travelcard which will save you money. Also when emerging from tube station don't stop and check your phone for messages, move away from station before doing so.

Thanks again for all the info.The last time I was in London was 1983 for the Royal Tourment.This should be one of my best port visits every.We are one day away from 4 days in Edinburgh that should be another every good one.I`ve spent alot of time there,almost like a second home to me.We have just done our last time change on this sail getting ready for Exercise Joint Warrior.Should be a good one.

Don't forget Horse Guards Parade it is possible to see the best guard change^&grin, and then walk up Bird Cage walk to Wellington Barracks and follow the new guard to Buck house!

Bovington Tank Museum is the best option, it is on the South Coast so would be a day out from London http://www.tankmuseum.org/

Cheap places in London - Premier Inn / Travel Lodges; with the Tube you can easily get into centre if they are slightly out

In London I would also look at visiting the Churchill / Cabinet War Rooms if WWII is an interest - http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/churchill-war-rooms
