I think you all know this thread will be deleted as it's exceedingly political but what is taking place is symptomatic of governments having to impose austerity, which is hitting poorer people. The wonder is that this hasn't happened sooner. With the western democracies groping for a solution, this is likely to increase.

The job of the police is also made more difficult by the coordination of the rioters through their smart phones and Facebook.

Well it seems that social discontent is often a spur for some great music and art.
The Marseilles was a song from the French Revolution.

Great post Brad, poor people feel they are being punished by cuts in jobs and benefits and somehow think this is an excuse to go on the rampage. Trouble is there are idiots about who want insurrection and cannot seem to string a coherent sentence together. There is no excuse for what happened last night, hopefully tonight may be better as 16,000 Police will be on the streets.

With all due respect and maybe you're trying to find some positives here but I'm not sure this is a moment for lightheartedness. I wouldn't be completely shocked if we see a western democracy succumb to a coup d'etat.

Well I hope to God its not this one!. This is indeed a very serious situation, people have been injured, lost their homes and places of work, what some of these rioters simply don't understand is that they are doing huge damage to their local area already struggling in harsh financial times. They've even attacked charity shops!.

You and me both! Years ago, there was a book called "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis, a great book, about a president who becomes a dicatator, and so forth.

Let's hope it doesn't happen anywhere.

Its got SFA to do with austerity and all that rubbish spouted by that loon Marcus and that nut livingston. How many people have grown up poor and not took to the streets and this should not be deleted as its not political its social and respect and decency which, none of these toerags have.

Water cannons rubber bullets should now be deployed with the army as back up and end this fiasco before someone dies by the acts of arson and wanton violence these idiots think is fun.

I am a bit sick of hearing excuses for these idiots its always the way blame it on society blame it on the police blame it on anyone other than where its needed the individuals who have broken the law. if they think its an insurection let them have one with the force of Law and order right in their faces.

My absolute sympathies with the injured police and the innocent hard working people who have lost their homes and livelihoods. Thankfully, nobody as yet has died at the hands of these poor little hard done by heathens

I too heard the interview with Darcus Howe, words fail me to be honest.

Rob...

I think it was a major ricket by the BBC to allow him to speak. I liked the bit about his previous as a rioter that kind of shut him down. Really what you want to hear if you have lost your home and lifes possesions or had other damage to property. I would like to see one of these liberal ivory towers loons have their home burnt to the ground or ransacked and then see if the austerity measures acts as a plausable and acceptable explanation?????

I do agree, and when he said to the interviewer 'Where were you in 81'? Well I can't repeat what I said to myself.

Rob

...which has led to members of the public arming themselves and coming out to defend their property.

Good for them. The rioters will wilt to strong, willful resistance, moving on to easier prey. Cowards, and opportunistic bullies, the lot of 'em.

Very well said.

I think the civil sensibilities denying the police water cannon should look at how effective they are. Spray rioters with cold stained red water (or, any colour) and, nobody has the will to fight for long when wet and cold. Then its a simple case of arresting those who are coloured red.

Its also worth noting that many of the fires could have been at least restricted if not initally extinguished should these tools have been readily available. It was nice to see the armoured vehicles drive at the crowds we are learning from the provinces

I think that the main reason for denying the use of water cannon is that the PC brigade are tip toeing around the inevitable screams of "police brutality" and "racism" that such use would undoubtedly engender. Unfortunately this is one ocassion when fire has to be fought with fire. Give the police a free hand to use force, a few full scale baton charges could work wonders, and if some one gets hurt then tough luck. There can be no good reason for anyone mingling with the rioters to be there, people defending their property will be in the property, not out on the street, anyone else has an ulterior motive. Once again a great post from Sir Alan of Common senseshire. Get stuck in with baton and rubber bullet.Anyone throwing bricks, petrol bombs or stood in front of the Police when its going on deserves everything they get. If you've nothing to do with rioting get off the streets and let the Police get in there and beat the living daylights out of these people. This country has gone so pc that our Police are scared to crack heads, I'm guessing the vast majority of folk would lke to see a bit more Baton on skull action.

Brad I agree with you I think the world is in a deep crisis at the moment.

The problem is that our water cannon were the "Green Godesses" they weren't replaced when they wore out, in order to save money. At the very least the rioters should have been sprayed with "magic water" so that they could be identified geneticaly over the next few weeks.

Its the police's fault, well thats what the pundits always say, they either do too much or not enough, and whatever they do its wrong anyway. Thank God I retired two years ago, so its no longer my fault Having previously been in the same situation as the cops in London have been in over the past few nights, I think a lot of them will be feeling FEAR and FRUSTRATION. Fear that they might get injured and frustration that they probably wont get the order to get in among the rioters. The hierarchy in most Police Forces in Britian are now so frightened of the PC lobby, that it will take a very brave chief constable to shout CHARGE!!
