Politics and religion aside many people were killed over the years by rubber bullets in Northern Ireland. It is something that many people from both sides of the debate in Ireland and Britain hope will never be seen again.

Good point Pete.

Just got this from Wiki

"From 1973 to 1981, over 42,000 plastic bullets were fired in Northern Ireland. Fourteen people were killed by plastic bullet impacts, including nine children. Most of the deaths were allegedly[12][13][14] caused by the British security
services misusing the weapon, firing at close range and at chest or head level rather than targeting below the waist".

Wiki has a few examples of use around the world.

However it would appear most were due to misuse. Training is the important point and the current plastic bullets
can be launched more accurately than before.

My main concern is that the UK Police seem to have little ability to respond to the situation. Basically baton and
shield is their only option and that means getting into close proximity with the rioters who often outnumber them.
Not much use when somebody is firebombing your police station which has happened in past few days.

Was thinking about if any UK Police have been tasering or macing anybody. Not seen any use of tear gas yet.

The question is how many cars and buildings have to be destroyed or innocent people attacked before some sort
of appropriate forceful response is used.

Well it was a quiet night across England last night, so lets hope we won't need to use either the rubber bullets or water cannon, but we shall see.

Rob

Rob,
From what I hear on the radio it was not so quiet for the guys being arrested after being identified from photos.

You're never supposed to aim directly, you bounce them of the ground so that they come up to the legs. I'ts also not a good idea to load DD batteries but if you do don't use green army issue batteries!

Martin

It looks like useing Facebook is comming back to bite them. There's now a group called "tagaway share" where if you recognise someone in a riot photo you can upload their name!

Martin

Martin,
We were also trained to bounce off the ground.

At last somebody has found a good use for Facebook !

I think they should experiment with bouncing them off their heads.

Yes, good on facebook users!

Rob

Rob,
The word is the new tactic in some areas was dropping job application forms on the rioters from helicopters.
Soon cleared the crowds.

According to official Libyan news sources, Irish & Scottish mercenaries have been used to help quell the riots. If that were true, why not just throw in a few Cossack units as well? The images & facts of the riots have been more than sobering without the Libyans & others making things up. Will the Angel of Mons make an appearance next?^&confuse{eek3}

No chance, Health and Safety won't allow him into the airspace without the appropriate forms signed in quadruplicate and British standard approved safety harness and helmet. Trooper

"First Collector: At this festive time of year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute.
Ebenezer: Are there no prisons?
First Collector: Plenty of prisons.
Ebenezer: And the union workhouses - are they still in operation?
First Collector: They are. I wish I could say they were not.
Ebenezer: Oh, from what you said at first I was afraid that something had happened to stop them in their useful course. I'm very glad to hear it. "
