Magnificent Seven. (1 Viewer)

I think the music and Yul Brynner made the first great but there are a couple of irritating plot developments that made no sense and rankle me no end.
I see the new one is much more politically correct regarding the casting. Fair enough. I hope it goes great so that more Westerns will get made.

That's actually a pretty catchy trailer - the Animals song works for me!

I have no interest in seeing it. The original "Magnificent Seven" needs no remaking.

Prost!

Agree. It doesn't matter how they gussy it up or what changes they make, they cannot replace the original brilliant cast (IMO, one of the best ensemble casts ever) or match the soaring film score. -- Al

I like Westerns but won't waste time and money to watch this so called remake.

I wonder if folks are concerned that the bad guys have changed? Rich guys are more realistically dangerous than banditos. ^&grin

Western movies as a popular genre are now practically obsolete and in spite of the hopes of a few of us who are true western fans I very much doubt they will ever make a comeback. A new presentation today with new stars and new scenery will seldom make a new version better than the original.

Elmer Bernstein's music for the original M7 is probably the most memorable music score in movie history. Is there anyone that cannot immediately recognise that stirring piece of orchestration. However, I have often wondered how the movie would be perceived today without that music. After all the plot is relatively simple and the action scenes fairly common. But the music is heard throughout the movie even during the most mundane activity that makes you think there is something special happening up on the screen.

In my opinion it is primarily the music that lifts this movie from the level of an ordinary western to that of a true classic that we all fondly remember today.

Doing a remake of this is like doing a new Zulu movie. However will look forward to it. Whoever cast the original movie knew what he was doing.

However the cast is not bad and score is by James Horner who has done some good movie scores in the past. This is his final one as he died recently but had completed score just in time.

"Doing a remake of this is like doing a new Zulu movie."

I don't think there'll ever be movies made like that again. Modern sensitivities and tastes, which equate to $$$ wouldn't allow the goodies v baddies simplicity (and often accuracy) of the past. You can get away with it maybe with Nazies but there's precious few WW2 movies. But movies that feature, for instance, a typically bloody Apache or Commanche ('The Searchers') raid, with a vengeful hunting down, wouldn't be allowed unless the Indians were treated with kids gloves. That said, I though the Zulu's were depicted quite positively in 'Zulu', very brave and honourable.

"You can get away with it maybe with Nazies...

As in the film version of Tom Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears." Changing the villains from Islamofascists to neo-Nazis was just plain dumb, but it was so trendily PC.

This is why I'm skeptical of remakes, and generally avoid them. I don't need to see a story, particularly a classic story, retold through the lens of contemporary worldviews.

Prost!

Remakes have always been a hit/miss affair. I liked the remake of 3.10 from Yuma but can understand why others did not, same with the remake of True Grit. Btw I wonder how many fans of the Seven Samurai weren't impressed with the original Magnificent Seven.

Loved the original M7 which of course was based on the Japanese film, the Seven Samurai.

I will not be seeing this PC Hollywood remake, utter garbage.

I agree with you on the pcism. It seems Hollyweird has to remake all the great movies so that a whitewashed version of history will seem to be happy little unicorn farts.I would go see it if I had not already seen the original a hundred times. I would end up focusing on all the changes.

I agree. What a bunch of maroons in Hollywood. Just goes to show you how little new ideas they have. This is ridiculous to water down a classic

Probably a lot of them. I would expect that Kurosawa fans probably aren't big fans of Westerns, generally. I'd be an exception to that generalization, because I like 'em both. But I think it's still a valid generalization to make.

Prost!

Caught an early preview of the "new M 7" last night. I had earlier noted that Nic Pizzolatto (he of True Crime fame) had helped write the screenplay and thought this might not be that bad after all. Alas it was not to be. Little time is spent on the background of the "Seven" as the director seemed to just want to film a two hour gunfight.

Not sure whether they intended paying homage to the 1960 film or to Kurosawa but it turned out to be neither. However, whilst its far from being memorable this multicultural/diversity version is certainly a lot of fun to watch and the final showdown- although predictable- is absolutely decibel blasting.

My favourite characters were the villainous capitalist tyrant who burns down the poor townsfolk's church and the Ethan Hawkes character. 60 year old Denzil does his best as the bounty hunter leader of the group but methinks he must be getting a reputation in Hollywood for starring in recycled classic movies- what with this one and The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Manchurian Candidate he seems to be the actor to go to for remakes

Enjoyed 3:10 to Yuma remake due to great acting and a little different script than the original. Totally hated True Grit remake as it basically copied line by line the original and none of the actors improved on the movie. Marbled mouth Bridges vs JOHN WAYNE..Please! Michael
