Mass Shooting in NZ Mosques. (1 Viewer)

Quick update:

Its now confirmed 40 persons have been killed in this terrible act of unprecedented violence and at least 48 people have been wounded, including woman and children.

30 persons were murdered in one mosque.

At least 2 IED's have also been discovered.

All Mosques around the country are under armed police guard.

The offenders are right wing extremists, one of which has traveled from overseas.

NZ is in shock right now, this is a very dark time for us.
 
A terrible tragedy, the footage was sick. I heart goes out to all New Zealanders and Muslims. Evil can’t win.
 
Another sad and pointless tragedy. The details so far in terms of preparation and methods reminds me a lot of the Norway incident back in 2011. Anders Behring Breivik acted alone but published a manifesto etc. I assume NZ has no death penalty but this is an act that calls out for it. Otherwise twenty years from now someone will suggest the perpetrators be released. Happens all the time in the US no matter how egregious the underlying act.
 
In the world we live in, where people who are different than the mainstream are viewed suspiciously and where politicians and social media fan the flames, events like this are sadly the result. Acts like these will not go away until we accept each other with all our differences.

The people in the US know this terrible feeling all to well.
It seems that no point in the world is now immune to this sickness of hate and violence.

Thank you guys for your very kind words and thoughts. This has been devastating for NZ and Kiwi’s are just numb right now.

What’s becoming clearer this morning here is that this terrorist cell has been led by overseas extremist/s who have traveled here specifically to commit this hennas act, seeing NZ as a soft, target rich country.

This was a well co-ordinated and planned attack on innocent persons in prayer.

The death toll stands at 49, with at least 48 others wounded, 20 of them in critical condition.

Sadly these sick individual/s were able to up-load their actions directly onto the internet while they carried out this massacre at two Mosques which has inflamed the situation further.

Sick, monstrous, appalling, infamous and coward! These are the feelings that overcome me while contemplating this horrific act of terrorism and brutal violence. Unfortunately (I say unfortunately because it is sickening) I’ve received this morning the scenes of the vile attack via Whatsup from a friend who is part of the Brazilian federal police’s tactical command, and it strikes you how bestiality can reach unimaginable heights... I can’t think of any punishment harsh enough that will do justice to what this human beast did... May he rot in hell!

Yeah he's an Australian citizen from northern New South Wales, residing in a town called Grafton. Australian Federal Police are speaking with his family who are co-operating fully.

He left Australia in 2012 and has been traveling around the world and only recently returned from Bulgaria in Eastern Europe to NZ.

He had no criminal history either here or in Australia apparently.

Reports coming through now suggest he acted alone.
 
My heart goes out to the wonderful people of New Zealand and all the families of the victims of this tragedy. I will never begin to understand what possesses people to open fire on unarmed people, especially woman and children.
 
Just got home from a holiday to New Zealand and might have walked past one of those mosques in Christchurch. The people of this great country are still getting over the devastating earthquakes that occurred some years ago and appeared to be getting on top of the situation with lots of building going on in Christchurch. Now for this terrible tragedy to happen has really devastated me having experienced the kind and welcoming nature of the New Zealand people. The fact that the gunman comes from Australia also shames me but I realise that he could well have come from anywhere as this type of ideology manifests it self worldwide. I'm a strong believer that people that perpetrate such crimes forfeit their right to stay alive and be kept in our prisons. I want to express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and pray for the injured to recover. Regards Greg.
 
Not happy my tax dollars will now go to keeping him fed, clothed and creature comforts for the rest of his life when so many are struggling to make ends meet in this country and worried whether they can keep a roof over their head. No question in my mind eventually these cowardice acts will not be tolerated by any civilized country and laws will need to be revamped. Robin.

I can see where you are coming from and change my mind on what to do, part of me thinks they do not deserve to live, but then I think that would be an easy way out for them. locking him up and letting him suffer over years even decades for me is a worse thing for me. I know people think that prison cushy but I do not think it is, let him suffer for decades, but lets not hear anything from him or his kind.

Perversely prisons and the costs add to a country's GDP, increasing it, so the more people you have in prison the higher your GDP.

The offender has now sacked his defence lawyer and plans to represent himself and no doubt will attempt to grand-stand and convey his sick ideology in court.
 
My initial thoughts was that he was going to be like that nutter from Norway. So it seems to be. The whole business of posting a manifesto just shows how paranoid and disconnected someone can be. Having these delusional obsessions reinforced by other creeps on the internet just fans it. A bunch of things have gone wrong for it to get to this. He is an Australian, so I wonder why it happened in New Zealand? I suspect it was because it was there he could get the guns he needed. So, so, tragic....
