Mike Tarantino's Toy Soldier Collection (2 Viewers)

Here is a stock photo of another Hiriart Italian themed set that I have in my collection: Set 1227 DRAGONI ITALIANI, 1891. I also have two others (lancers and colonial cavalry) from 1891; photos to follow.

Another local collector ordered Hiriart Set 1227 DRAGONI ITALIA, 1891 as a special double set. I have attached some photos so you can see the label and individual figures more closely.

Hi Mike, have Hiriart ever ventured into the Boxer Rebellion?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

No, they haven't, per se, with the exception of Set 1231 CHINESE BOXER INFANTRY, 1900 (photo attached). However, they have a number of other standard catalog sets of U.S. Marines, Russian Infantry, Japanese Infantry, and Italian Bersaglieri from that time period where their uniforms would be correct. If I already didn't have an extensive Boxer Rebellion collection from Trophy Miniatures and Bastion Models, I would have had Hiriart making them for me on special commissions a long time ago. I believe I have somewhere north of 50 Boxer Rebellion sets from those other two makers.

Mike

As an example, the Bersaglieri above, in set 1269, could be used, as they are, for the Boxer Rebellion, or they could be painted as a special with blue tunics and pants with white helmets and white leggings.

Another example of an existing Hiriart set that could be used for the Boxer Rebellion is Set 1267 WORLD WAR I SCHUTZTRUPPE, AFRICA. Better yet, I would have them painted with lighter gray hats and pants with blue pin striping (keeping the darker gray tunics) to make them the GERMAN EAST ASIA BRIGADE, as shown in the Osprey Men-at-Arms Number 95 "The Boxer Rebellion."

This is a stock photo of Hiriart's catalog Set 1290 ASCARI SOTTO IL TRICOLORE, 1898 which represents Italian colonial native Ascari in Somaliland in the late 19th century. My set actually has the correct nine figures and not the eight figures shown in the stock photo. They are the 3rd Battaglione as indicated by the red flag with the Roman Numerial III and their red sashes and tassels.

Nice looking A-H sets. I have always liked the A-H WW1 uniforms, especially the colorful cavalry and the early war infantry unis. The USMC set is really neat looking, too. Looks like they stepped right out of 'The Wind and the Lion'.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Thanks, Al. Not too many collectors seem to like the WWI Austro-Hungarians. Maybe it is due to their gray uniforms, but I love them. Bastion Models made at least four sets (Austrian Regt in 1900, Hungarian Regt in 1900, WWI Bosnians, and WWI Mountain Inf), none of which I have, but I keep looking for them. Bob Walker is a big A-H fan and has a large collection. I really like the USMC landing party, too. After seeing them, I started thinking about possibly commissioning Hiriart to make the Navy landing party and Moroccan Guard figures from that movie.

Mike, don't want to get off the Hiriart track here, but Soldiers of the World (Regal) makes Austro-Hungarian WW1 infantry, both early and late war, with or without gasmasks. -- Al
