Hi Guys,
Our friend “Isandlwana” reports, for him, some “disappointing news that the Lancashire Fusiliers never wore a combination of Service Dress (SD) uniform with Khaki Drill (KD)”.
He maybe basing his opinion on the excellent Osprey book “The British Army in World War1 (3)” which focuses on the Eastern Front and the one illustration therein by Mike Chappell showing a Fusilier fully kitted out in complete SD with long trousers and puttees.
When doing my own research I also considered the excellent “British Infantry Uniform” by Michael Barthorp illustrated by Pierre Turner and several other books by Mike Chappell. Perhaps the most useful documentary evidence was the 1964 television series “THE GREAT WAR” which included one entire episode on the war in the Middle East and Mesopotamia. Lo and behold there were more than a few scene where British soldiers were wearing what we, in the Royal Marines, used to call “mixed rig”. In this particular case….KD shorts topped with SD jackets.
The wonderful variety and styles soldiers adopt “in the field” and “on campaign” are a delight and a joy to toy soldier and military miniature enthusiasts the world over….and very accurate to the time and place.
War in the desert provides a range of contrasting extremes – blistering hot by day….freezing cold at night. Examples of “mixed rig” are plentiful both during the First and Second World Wars….you just have to look for them.
One small piece of advice I would like to pass on….”never say never”….
Best wishes and happy collecting!
P.S. Happy to hear you like the new ALH figures…. Thanks!
