Hi Guys,

Our friend “Isandlwana” reports, for him, some “disappointing news that the Lancashire Fusiliers never wore a combination of Service Dress (SD) uniform with Khaki Drill (KD)”.

He maybe basing his opinion on the excellent Osprey book “The British Army in World War1 (3)” which focuses on the Eastern Front and the one illustration therein by Mike Chappell showing a Fusilier fully kitted out in complete SD with long trousers and puttees.

When doing my own research I also considered the excellent “British Infantry Uniform” by Michael Barthorp illustrated by Pierre Turner and several other books by Mike Chappell. Perhaps the most useful documentary evidence was the 1964 television series “THE GREAT WAR” which included one entire episode on the war in the Middle East and Mesopotamia. Lo and behold there were more than a few scene where British soldiers were wearing what we, in the Royal Marines, used to call “mixed rig”. In this particular case….KD shorts topped with SD jackets.

The wonderful variety and styles soldiers adopt “in the field” and “on campaign” are a delight and a joy to toy soldier and military miniature enthusiasts the world over….and very accurate to the time and place.

War in the desert provides a range of contrasting extremes – blistering hot by day….freezing cold at night. Examples of “mixed rig” are plentiful both during the First and Second World Wars….you just have to look for them.

One small piece of advice I would like to pass on….”never say never”….

Best wishes and happy collecting!

P.S. Happy to hear you like the new ALH figures…. Thanks!

I plan to put you in a head lock should you consider venturing to Brisbane this year, so look out. Back to core series I say,Ancient Egypt, Market Garden & LOJ, but considering you are coming to the party with Light Horse, I may let you go before you turn blue. I know you were in the Marines, but I reckon I can take you based on the passion I have for these series. These 4 plus Zulu would be the last I would give up from my collection. Just need you to stop listening to all the collectors obsessed with WW11. Cheers, Robin.

Core series..............^&confuse
That would be the best sellers,so more WW2 Germans simple as that...........................^&grin

Does anyone use Osprey as a reference source on a par with Wiki????(LOL but, its not a joke!!) Agree totally with Wayne the core series
Mitch

Perhaps my interpretation of a core series is perhaps not the biggest seller, but something unique to a company. K&C have it pretty much to themselves for AE, LH, LOJ and to a degree MG. For me this why K&C stand out from the other companies who all do WW11. Hey I did not mean to hijack the thread, so back to books & uniforms:cool:, cheers, Robin.

"Never say never" is indeed a good general rule when it comes to the battlefield. Another good source is photographs; I have seen everything from soldiers stripped down to nothing more than shorts in the summer heat, to a hodgepodge of outer clothing in extreme cold.

The same principle is often observed in weapons and other fieldgear etc.
